I am just beginning the big transcode process with over 24 TB of footage and growing as the project continues.
I need a Redrocket card for sure, but my question is, do I buy now? Or will RED announce a Thunderbolt updated Red Rocket at NAB?

In that case would it make sense to rent a Redrocket card or system with Redrocket, and if I rent what would that cost?

It's a big investment, so I wanted to get some opinions.

That's a tough one...
Im not a gambling man, but going by past RED news, Reds back order history and the NON response to my RED Rocket portable post solution..
I say there is no chance in HELL of RED bringing out any Red rocket thunderbolt option any time soon.

WHICH in my humble opinion would sell like hot cakes!!!

get the rent me app and you can do the math... should be about 90us a day to rent.

But since most people have it installed in their own computers it's probably more convenient to ask a post house to render the proxies for you. The card a small part of the equation. baby sit the renders and make sure is actually quite a job as well.

On a fast computer your 24TB will probably go to proress in less than 2 days so again do the math... I think renting the card will be a money saver.
Letting somebody do it for you will probably set you back about half a card. but then you can be out shooting instead...

I don't know if RED will announce a Thunderbolt enabled Rocket at NAB, but MAXX Digital has said somewhere around here that they're building a Thunderbolt enclosure....not the same thing but can definitely make a difference, depending on your system.

I wouldn't rule out a Thunderbolt Rocket at NAB entirely - there's been a lot of noise about it, and RED has already said that they're not pre-announcing new stuff anymore. We just don't know. I would sure like one....

Thanks for all the feedback.
Anybody have any ideas where I might rent a Redrocket system for now? I just hate to buy things twice.
I am based in Seattle, and don't know of any place here.

Yeah. Rocket renders are hella fast. And i hate using that word, but it definitely applies here. Rent it for a few days, bang out those transcodes, then youll be hooked and want to buy one anyway. :D

Talk to or PM Fred Beahm, he can probably hook you up!
