OK. So here we are, right in the middle of putting together the impossible. We started from scratch 14 months ago on the quest to produce a mind-blowing revolution in digital cinema in an incredibly short period of time. We also committed to an "open development" format. Here is where we are today:
This is a tremendously difficult project with a ton of problems to solve everyday. We are not finished, but we are getting there. There is good news and bad news. Let's start with some good news.
We are on track to begin delivering the 1st RED ONE (Spike) cameras somewhere around NAB as promised. We will show working cameras at NAB. The Mysterium® sensor is all world. Images are incredible. The complete system has come a LONG way since NAB last year, thanks to many of you. The specs should hold or improve from expectations.
Some bad news. The 1st cameras that ship will not be full feature enabled. I expect about 85% of all features to come with Serial #1-100.
Some more good news. All the important features (including 4k REDCODE RAW) will be enabled from the beginning. The camera will be useable from day one.
Some bad news. Users will have to upgrade software and firmware to enable remaining feature sets for the 1st couple of months. 100% of features enabled by June or July.
Good news. It will be easy to upgrade feature sets.
Bad news. Production will be a bit slower ramping up than originally thought.
Good news. We still believe that we can fill all reservations safely by September or October.
More good news. REDCINE will be available from day one. It is a Pro application that will do more than you would expect. And all of the hardware, including EVF, LCD, drives and rail system will be ready when the cameras are shipping.
Remember, specs and delivery dates can change at any moment. But we feel pretty good about what our customers will get. Experts (under NDA) are pretty fired up at where we are and what we are doing.
Bad news. We can't tell you their names.
Good news. We will be able to tell you at NAB.
Overall, I am confident that all reservation holders will be extremely happy. If not, we will offer a 110% refund to any reservation holder that does not agree after we present at NAB.
More info. 4K images will be projected on a Sony 4k projector in our booth. We will show working cameras, live capture and a complete working REDCINE workflow in the booth. There will be significant announcements and industry partnerships made at NAB along with new pieces added to the system, including lenses, on display at NAB.
We will always tell you the truth about our development. As soon as we know for sure. That's where we are today.

Hmmm... interesting and amazing all in one. #1-100, man, that knocks the numbers down quite a bit! :)
Can't wait to see you guys at NAB and neither can my Cinematography class either! I've just been telling them all about the camera and we're making that first Monday of exhibits a field trip. So I'm sure there's going to be about another 12 or 20 possible RED customers after they see this. (Might be a tad difficult for my teacher though, he loves Panavision stuff to death!)

Once people see the power and flexibility (and space saving) of recording REDCODE RAW to disk, locking into RGB will be a pretty unused feature in my opinion anyways.

Oooo, all sorts of new things here. Thanks for the post, Jim. The bad news doesn't phase me... and I'm willing to bet that reservation holders will be on the same page.
Now the obligatory Brook Question Post™
First off, you mention that the 15% of missing features are largely related to the RGB side of things. You also mention that it's something that could be taken care of in REDCINE. Accordingly, I'm assuming that the missing features involve the scaled output? The 1080p and 720p RGB from S35mm, S16mm, etc? Will 60fps and 120fps scaled RGB be out for the time being as well?
I suppose this only affects about 100 people. The good news? The first 100 people are the true 'believers' - the kind of people who will understand.
Moving on. :)
It is a Pro application that will do more than you would expect.Any word on what else it will do? We know it'll one-light, crop, scale, chew up EDLs and output online... are the extra features related to fine-tuning workflow or newly expanded feature sets?
4K images will be projected on a Sony 4k projector in our booth. We will show working cameras, live capture and a complete working REDCINE workflow in the booth. Now I really can't wait... this is fantastic. Almost as fantastic as...
There will be significant announcements and industry partnerships made at NAB along with new pieces added to the system, including lenses, on display at NAB.
Oh man, now you've caused problems with my sleep tonight.
I'm guessing that many of the added pieces are support related. But new lenses? Did the set of primes you mentioned once up on a time move closer to reality???
Oh man. If only all bad news could come with so much good news.

Only features I care about are the ability to record RAW to some form of storage. And the ability to convert from RAW to RGB. It seems that functionality is intact.
No worries here.

Hmmm... this on the other hand will have to be pretty impressive to win my heart. I've had high expectations since before it existed.

Thanks Jim, great news! From my European perspective with the reservation #694 I could wait til the Fall starts, end of the year or even the beginning of next... to be more real I am not in a rush at all to rent or shoot with the RED ONE and I do not care about when the RED ONE camera will be delivered. I do not make any future plan with the RED ONE just because of the RED open concept about development and shipping schedule. It is very flexible time frame and also it is very open to delays and changes. Only I care is about to get technologically the best possible, ready to use the RED ONE digital cine camera with 4K>2K>1080p>720p REDCINE workflow as the RED TEAM can make it according to unbelievably and absolutely fantastic short time of the development. By the way software always needs longer time to write and test. And of course also the best price as a reservation holder can get. It makes sense to wait for the RED ONE whenever it comes.

Where do we think the RED summit is being held...? :shiftyph34r:
COLD version: In a remote mountain range with heli access, constantly shuttling people to various peaks while they rip down on their 163cm REDboards?
HOT version: On a remote tropical Island with boat access, constantly shuttling people out to various reefs and point breaks while they beta test the RED water housing and RED helmetcam?
In actuality everybody will probably just be working their butt's off with brief moments of celebration...:weight_lift::sorcerer: :weight_lift:

Thanks Jim, look forward to hearing about the elusive focus tool built into the camera soon too. Is this something that will be up and running on launch?
I think the fact it will require firmware updates at the start will actually work in your favour anyway. It will make upgrading the camera public knowledge as it will be discussed thoroughly here. It'll then be seen as an important part of the cameras evolution rather than just updating for the sake of updating.

02-27-2007, 02:36 AM
I think it's an excellent plan to try to get the hardware ready first and into people's hands. Software can always be updated and tweaked later - and if it is as easy as I think it will be to upload a new firmware to the cam - this is an absolute a non-issue.
Non of the "bad news" worries me. These are just things caused by their extremely tight schedule - which they keep amazingly well.

I never cease to be amazed at what Jim and the entire RED team have achieved. The accomplishments are so numerous and on so many levels that I really believe they are going to have a whole lot more than "just another competitive product" on the market when they launch. Everything from the quality of the camera to the philosophy of the company is a radical change from the status quo of this tired industry and I am proud to be in that first batch of 100 supporters.
I really can't wait 'till NAB... see you all there. :)

The good news is all great – can't wait to hear new lens announcements.
The bad news contains no major issues.
Brook nailed it with the most significant 'bad news' issue. How long will it be before 720p120 and 1080p60 REDCODE RGB are available? Those frame rates are the only reasons for not going RAW as far as I can see. But hey, the Genesis could only do 30fps when it first came out. Mel Gibson and Bryan Singer had to wait for upgrades, so I guess we all can too!

Everyone realised this was a monumental task right from the start, to be quite honest I think even the most ardent fans are shocked by just how much has been achieved already. The bad news is not actually so bad, to me it demonstates a commitment to do the job right despite the huge pressure to deliver 100% at NAB. Limited delivery seems like a good compromise to me.
The most important thing is to iron out all the wrinkles before ramping up production and even if that means additional delays beyond what has already been stated then so be it. There can't be many here who would prefer a rushed camera.

The high-speed port is RAW only, so is not relevant for RGB. RGB is only for scaled REDCODE recording (on on-board RED DRIVE or RED FLASH) or dual link HD-SDI output for 'conventional' external recording.

I also like the firmware upgrade thing. And this announcement really is an indicator of how Red Digital Cinema views itself and it's reservation holders.
I think it also exhibits a great deal of understanding of its first 100 without taking them for granted--it knows we early adopters are part of the revolution, yet will not make us cannon fodder. Vive la RED.

As a Sony HD owner it is such a pleasure to have a relationship with a company who speaks honestly and openly with the users.
If there is an extra Demo, or someone is foolish enough to drop out: how about a lottery among us high number folk?
No one yet has explained the camera software update process and I can't find any reference to it in the postings in the forum. I'm sure there will be additional updates and new features also in the future so It's of interest to us all.

Jim or anyone else on the RED team is there an expected date of when an approximate shipping schedule will come out (eg. 1-100 date, 101-200 date etc.). No rush on this but a general idea on shipping will be very helpful to be able to be budgeted and workflow organized for arrival of the camera.

I hope some kind of NAB video coverage is planned. For us that can't make it to NAB this would mean a lot.
Live webcam feed from the booth would be really cool.
Worldwide Redusers also feel as a part of this and would also like to see this history in the making.
Yes, webcam live coverage is great idea!!! Or any podcast.

Can we expect a price list for red rail, light weight support rods, other lens mounts, various brackets battery mount, cables, vf etc. etc. anytime soon. Gotta budget ahead. we'll all have cameras in the fall....whoooooppeeeeeee
It would also be nice to see a rendering which explodes the parts available (like in a lot of parts books not actually blow up) so we can see what each part is called... so we know what we want to order. ie (rear rail bracket with tighteners, short rear rails)

I have been figuring that the 400th camera would be delivered in "late summer." Does that sound about right?
Evin Grant
02-27-2007, 12:32 PM
Assuming all orders will be filled by mid September, and there are about 1500 then they should deliver about 300 a month depending on ramp up. I'd say you'd have #400 by July.
At red, when it rains, it pours.
About the firmware thing, this is great. The idea of the camera's software being constantly upgradable is truly awesome. This is as much significant as the hardware being easily upgradable. This would mean that compatible features or widgets that pop up down the line will be available to all.
Goodluck with the final stretch! Were all rooting for you.

Thanks for the update Jim. I think we all appreciate your honesty and respect for our input.
I was worried about one thing though, is the inability to record RGB in the beginning going to affect monitoring? Will the HDSDI ports still be hot? I have to admit that I'm not too concerned considering that I'm not in any danger of being near 1-100 on the reservation list.
I was also wondering about what someone posted earlier about how software often takes longer to develop than hardware. Is that true in this case? I have to say that this is all very interesting. Just the idea of being able to update or upgrade your camera with downloads from the internet amazes me.

There should be a big red door at the back of the booth which can only be opened by a Red Key. Inside the room is the 4K projector, and Kelly in her Sticker outfit serving Red Koolaide to us faithfuls (Spiked of course).
And in this room, is the only place anyone will be able to see the test footage shot at the race track.
Oh, and of course, it should be what you show to the 6'4" bouncer to get into the RED party that evening. :)
As for the summit. Didn't you all get your invitations? Maybe I was supposed to pass the info along: My invite says to just go out to an open field on the Evening of Mar 4th (as in 4K) at 720pm and 10:80pm (do the math) and hold your Red key to the sky--it will glow. Satellites will be scanning the globe for the Red Key beacon and Oakley Helecopters will be dispatched to pick you up. Be careful, though, the beacon is pretty strong so you better make a hat and briefs out of tin foil so as not to mess up your brain and make you sterile. See you there!

Jim
Technically that's all good news.
This is the Real World and basically what you have said is that you are working your collective rears off and are pretty damn close to your targets.
Amazing considering how high you've set the bar.
Keep on keeping on and it will all materialize in due time.
Thanks for being visible and responsive!

Hope not very soon. Just got 10 Ultraprimes !. Speaking of $$...when are we supposed to pay the other U$ 16.500. At delivery time ?...Great Mcguillicutty:huh:, that's what we've all been waiting for !!! If you can afford an Ultraprime set, surely a RED set of primes would be easy peasy...if you ask me, a RED set of primes or even a couple focal lengths (at reasonable prices) is as revolutionary as the camera itself. The camera is a cracker; we just need some lenses to make it perfect.
Lenses are new panties on Britney Spears, the Coca to the Cola, an 8 year old rum with a fine cigar.
Jim, please don't make me fly to St.Petersburgh and meet some dude named Pavel in a shady alley to buy some oddly named lenses from a defunct military company with all Russian instructions. I really don't like potato vodka and hairy women (apologies to my Russian compatriots).
To sum up -> RED lenses would make RED a premiere full service digital cinema corporation. I'd settle for the zoom to be ready sooner rather than later, though.

I'd also LOVE to see the option of a servo-controlled zoom lens for RED that doesn't require stepping down to a 2/3" B4 HD broadcast lens (plus $4000+ optical adapter) and the resultant loss of resolution that produces.
Documentary shooters want the option of getting the full blast of the Mysterium Sensor too... but they can't have somebody running alongside to pull focus as they manually zoom a 35mm lens while trying point in the right direction as they chase after the unscripted chaos of the real world!

Now, I will reserve my reservation to NAB. THANKS JIM AND CREW!
Sorry, if a few of us, have been wanting to hear this update for weeks, but now that this is said, I will be happy to goto NAB.
As I said before, just keep us in the loop! Good and Bad news - it will all come out in the end... giving us the inside loop - only makes us support you more! And please if you need ideas or solutions to problems ask us, I'm sure, we all have connections in Silicon Valley & LA that would solve REDs needs.
We are a huge resource, so please use us - that's why we are here. And why I waited to reserve #217... And I'm sure you know, it would be better for a slow but almost perfect rollout than a fast rollout and recall. So please, take your time, keep us up to date... God Speed..
YOU ALL ARE MAKING HISTORY - FOR GOD'S SAKE ENJOY IT! It's just the beginning! Wait till next NAB 08, RED will have the best Demo real from all of us! I can't wait to shoot!

I knew I should've reserved the max 5 cameras and lenses to go with all of them. :greedy: ...Even though I only need one. Hehe.
Seriously though, I'm still confused as to why I hesitated on the first round of reservations... Perhaps I was still jazzed over my HVX200 purchase. Anyway, Jim's participation with the community and attention to the individual user was reason enough to put in for a reservation.

Well this Ultraprime deal was forced by the Red One reservation reopening.
I did have one camera reserved, the I asked for a second body and the zoom lens. The very next day I went shooting for a couple of days and by the time I came back there was an email from Red saying that it was impossible to pay this time with credit card and reservations were closed.
I saw the project walking strong and I figure out that by the time I´d get the camera I would not have a set of primes for it. Also I needed to get a set for a 435 and this 10 lenses deal appeared at a good price. but the truth is that I always though that a red prime set would be fantastic !.

Reading those posts over at Cinemetography.com is nauseating. First of all, anyone who knows me, knows I get along with everyone, so don't take this as bashing, just observation.
Are there "fanboys/girls" on this site? Sure, I'm probably one of them. My cinematography credits are limited, however my post-production credts are not. What I don't understand is that some of the people who are taking shots at Jim and others here, don't seem to have the extensive DP credts their comments would seem to indicate. I looked a few of them up on IMDB.
So, just as I've seen in the post-production audio world, where seasoned veteran mixers look at the Mix-it-in-the-box folks as unable to make anything worth listening to, I'm seeing the same attitude towards the "independent" filmakers and cinematographers roaming this site.
I can understand the wait and see attitude some might have, that's understandable. Bashing people for being excited about a camera they put a nice chunk of money down for a deposit and a belief in the developers of the camera seems rather misguided to me. Many of them indicate Red users won't be able to make anything worth a damn, that the camera isn't going to make them film Gods, and although that is true that the camera is only a tool, why attack the creative merit of these people without seeing what they may be capable of doing with it. Why not wait until films made with a Red camera are available for viewing and then critique them?
I just don't understand the animosity I see so often in this industry. So many people walking on eggshells, defensive. This is supposed to be a collaborative field, one where you learn from those that came before you and then strive to evolve the art and craft into something of your own, using all the tools that are available to you. To me, there is no place for shooting down those who come after you, or anyone for that matter. What does it say about you and your career?
This industry is cutthroat at times, that is the reality. But if we want to see it have another golden age, it will require people to put their egos aside and work towards bettering it. Optimism, passion, a desire to work with others who have unique vision that they want to share with the world. These are what could bring the magic back to making movies, TV, etc.
Sorry, for the long soapbox speech here, but after reading the exciting news and then making the mistake of reading the response over at the other forum, I felt I had to say something.
Jim and team, congratulations on achieving what you have. I anxiously look forward to seeing this all unfold at NAB. Based on what I have seen from you guys, in the business sense, I am very comfortable having made the leap when I did. Seeing footage should seal the deal.
Regards,
Steve

DAMN. I knew I should've reserved more than one!
Er... Anyway, about those guys on that other site. I'm not sure what their deal is. FWIW, they're like this about all things new. It took them FOREVER to accept 24p from a DV camcorder (the DVX100) and there were many of them there who would claim "oh it's not true 24p" or whatever. I don't understand the attitude and mentality over there. It's not unusual and I see it in other industry specific forums, but I still don't get it.

That's what's strange about it. Why shoot something down before you get your hands on one. It's reasonable to wait until you can do that and then make a judgement. It prevents you from having to go back on your words. Say nothing, face is clean. Say wrong thing, wipe egg from face.

yeah.. such stupidity hurts..
now.. their last hobby is quoting this forum.. it seems they have paid some attention on what's going on here..
if it wasn't for such stupidity and because they're reading us, i won't care.. but some their quotes are too much.. lol
there's a guy named john holland who says this:
"For fucks sake , when are you Red worshippers going to get it , you dont need a 4k digital camera to make movies , look at that awful film "The Blair Witch Project " shot with a couple of empty baked bean tins and a bit of tape running through them . Cost about if i remember about $25,000 , made about $250 million , the audiences loved it . Its story people , please understand it ."
is it necessary to comment?.. because it seems they feel no need at all in everything above Hi8.. including film.. eheheh.. their quotes ain't fools proof.. sometimes, there can't be nothing similar to film.. when they have no any argument other than as the obvious or what can serve them.. they're thinking they can teach the other people here.. it's pathetic.. maybe because they're posting from a site called cinematography.com, they're thinking they are owners of the truth in this field..
and coming from this holland, it's still more funny.. their fuck quotes seem what the bad scriptwriter needs when doesn't find (the necessary) creative speech for the characters..
the only one who can speak a little bit is David Mullen and period.. he doesn't need to use the slang..
however, for their information, i've been working with some DPs with a most interesting career than this guy from twin falls idaho and.. eheheh..
my last word goes to the envy on jarred's contribution.. how much they're attacking this cool giant, they're showing jarred's role over this red stuff.. red is not only jannard.. red is jarred too.. and a good sample of their mediocrity is basically over these personal attacks towards jarred.. they don't forgive themselves for the others success.. and jarred climbed the door that they would like to have open and it is not.
they underestimated what they couldn't.. a 1,2 billion dollar business man.. c'mon, who are they thinking are they cheating?!.. this has been their mistake..
now.. their last hobby is quoting this forum.. it seems they have paid some attention on what's going on here..
Its not a hobby, theyre just closet addicts like we are. Redsistance is futile.

So, just as I've seen in the post-production audio world, where seasoned veteran mixers look at the Mix-it-in-the-box folks as unable to make anything worth listening to, I'm seeing the same attitude towards the "independent" filmakers and cinematographers roaming this site.
Regards,
Steve
It is indeed laughable how similar all this is to the audio world back in 1990.
We had sound guys dumping anything digital, we had talent flatly refusing to be recorded on anything but analog tape.
Look where we are now.
I´ve seen a lot of studios where the dust on the 24 track is becoming a health threat.
And to spin the analogy further: Soundtools and later early ProTools Versions are quite primitive in retrospect.
Imagine a world 10 years from now when the RED ONE is considered primitive. What are we going to have?
Light improving instead of light gathering devices? Lenses with minus stop marks because of some Mysterium Voodoo algorithms? Handheld 600mm shots because of some target lock mechanism licensed from the military?
Cheerio,
Jochen

Seems like a record.
I guess that tells you a lot, Jim.

Thanks Jim and RED team,
It is all good news and some postponed good news! Sorry to be unable to see you all at NAB. Some live video over the net would be very nice. Keep the good work we have trust in you!

I know its kind of off topic but...Re filmmaker's gang's quote of John Holland's comment on Blair Witch - not everyone wants to make movies about kids being spooked in a forest or hand-held verite' films. It's all horses for courses. I personally never put 100% into my DV projects because I hated everything about it - it just doesn't inspire! Yes we MUST have mobile phone/hi8/ miniDV filmmakers AND RED shooters! Every project has its 'appropriate' medium. I now spend too many waking hours conceptualizing the feature I'm gonna shoot on RED and its an awesome feeling! AND lenses...I never even used to think about lenses! I'm sorry but I felt a seismic shift in my attitude and its all because of RED, the company, the attitude...

there's a guy named john holland who says this:
"For fucks sake , when are you Red worshippers going to get it , you dont need a 4k digital camera to make movies , look at that awful film "The Blair Witch Project " shot with a couple of empty baked bean tins and a bit of tape running through them . Cost about if i remember about $25,000 , made about $250 million , the audiences loved it . Its story people , please understand it ."
well i dont know about anyone else but im a cinematographer.. i dont write the stories.. my job is to show up.. light the scene accordingly... know which lenses im using and shoot the scene and make it look as best as possible.. if the director wants shitty hi8 or 8mm then fine.. ill do that.. but im buying the red to produce commercial products!.. obviously the DP tells the story through movement and lighting and so on.. but honestly.. im paid to shoot someone else's story.. as long as my project looks good and conveys what the director wants me to convey via cinematography then i have done my job...
so anyways with that out of the way.. to stay on topic..

Picture post was just intended as an observation about Red skeptics in general, rather than a dig at anyone specific! :innocent:

Frankly, it seems a lot of DP'S are worried about their jobs. God forbid some college wannabe shoots his own film and everyone says it looks great.... Plus DP's are generally curmudgeons to begin with...

I dont get it..
they slag off red, pha people think that 4k makes them great.. rubbish.
then
You don't need 4k.. look at Blair W its all about the story!
wern't they nobodys with a camera? so they need to be worried either way? not really.. everyone has a place.
So a nobody.. or god forbid a somebody, with a red and a good story...
If your good at your job you have nothing to worry about. For me there are to many people out there calling themsleves pro's.

So, I woke up this morning feeling like I was mauled by a bear...
Was actually three bears in dentist costumes in fact!
And I was sitting on the dentist's chair all day long yesterday from 11am to 9pm
So I fire up my browser and what do I see?
Jim has some good and some "bad" news, I knew nothing could be worse than what I had yesterday and I was right!
It's just Great and plain News, nothing bad whatsoever
And getting my camera around September-ish? Works fine for me, just enough time to start shooting on Late Fall as originally scheduled :w00t:

It's not like if your images are mediocre, the REDcam is going to magically make your images amazing!? Yes it's going to be a wonderful tool...but not in the hands of someone who does'nt know what they're doing!
