Is there as way to format the SSD's without having the camera available? If not, can I make that a feature request if at all possible? In my workflow I like to format my cards right away after I copy them. If I am turning and burning the cards it is nice to have them ready to go once they are back in the camera so I don't have to take more time to format.

I wasn't sure if this would be a Redcine-X or a 3rd party request.

r3d data manager does it, but I haven't tested it on a SSD yet, worked with red drives and cf cards just fine.

Formatting in the camera allows the metadata header denoting camera and roll number to be incremented. I don't believe this is possible in r3d manager. Also I think it would add confusion to what roll numbers were shot, transferred, etc. Doesn't seem like a good workflow.

I haven't tried R3D manager yet, I will have to look into that. I number and label things a bit differently for what I do so most times I manually put in that info.

But if your camera won't boot and you need to reinstall firmware, formatting the SSD on a computer is indispensable.

you dont need to reformat a card to put firmware on it.

R3D Data Manager can format media for the Red One, including SSDs. Formatting is not available for the Epic/Scarlet. But to format mags with R3D Data Manager, the media must first have been formatted on camera. So the recommended workflow is to format at the beginning of a day on camera, then increment roll numbers using R3D Data Manager.

Really? I always had to format my CF cards before installing firmware on my R1. I just assumed it was the same with my Epic SSD's.

Is Epic and Scarlet support in the pipeline for future versions?

The reasoning behind my questions is if I am rotating through cards on a continuous shoot I don't want to have to pause for too long to format in camera.

Format in-camera on the Epic is really swift...

Never formated anything to update, what I can remember...

Cheers!

Nope. I never reformat for firmware, just stick it on the first SSD I find. Doesn't affect the clips in any way.

Pretty sure I never reformatted CFs before putting firmware on either.

Are you sure it isn't just a procedure you did? I'm sure it says to format in the instructions, but that is probably just to enfore you were using formatted media.
