does the fan ever shut off ?
i'm want to try out audio in a living room and the fan is always on , i can hear it 12ft away ( no mic) ... it's seems to be at it lowest setting and has a sort of high pitch whinning sound ( it's not the LCD- that too has a high pitch sound when your ear is next to it) ...when i hit record it stays on this low setting ... when i put it in quiet mode the fan goes to a the low fan ( with whinning sound) when i hit record and then back to full fan when i turn record off ....
i've tried all the Fan settings ...
it's about 68 degrees ...i've tried turning the camera off for 30 min ...temp is "OK" ...
never really paid attenion to it before because have been mostly in noisy locations and wasn't testing audio ....

Does your fan spin down when you press record?

re-install the latest firmware.
Set fan on "variable". when you press record - the fans should be OFF - if not - 'ya better start a help ticket with RED.

"Does your fan spin down when you press record?"
not today ... i called a person that tested 103 last sunday and he said they did turn off when he hit record ...
so i'll add that to the other items when 103 goes back for the PL lub job !!!

first - go to the maintenence menu and hit RESTORE -
test again -
if they still will not shut off -
re-install latest firmware.

I haven't had any fan problems since the first week or so of #27 then they fixed it back at like build 8 or something.

i tried the restore & reloaded firmware ....
i'm reading page 43 of the manual and it states fan runs at lower speed during record in all modes ?
the only way i can get them to shut off or at a low enough speed acceptable for audio (in a living rm) is to put a medical cool pack on it and then it's only good for about 10 min ...
i don't see anything in the manual but wasn't there something about pulling out something from the air intakes for warm weather ?? or putting something in for winter use ??

The quietest record mode when operating indoors will probably be SILENT. The fans does still run, but slowly.
Operating outdoors, and especially in colder weather, VARIABLE (the default setting since Build 11) may in practice be the quietest.

after more testing -
there is a silent mode - 1st turn camera ON - i get approx approx 20 min of silence ( fans just barely on) ... after that the fans go up in speed and do not turn down/off when recording ...camera must be off for approx 40 min to get another 20 min ....
the way 103 is running today = unacceptable for audio after 20min ...
is there some kind of stuffing in the air intakes for winter use that comes out for summer use ??
103 has a long day on Monday ...

That would probably be the VARIABLE mode I described. Also try the SILENT mode to see how that works for you.
If you are outside its surprising how a little breeze can help the VARIABLE mode maintain temperature with virtually silent fans.

8:30pm liv room, temp 68 ... turn on camera ... fans go to full for approx 10 sec then go silent ...
after 10 min fan comes on - too loud for audio in quiet room ( varible mode) ...
silent, quiet, standard mode are the same - the fans are full blast . hit record they do go down to a lower speed that is too loud ...
HOT - fans are on FULL at all times ...
turn camera off .... after 1 min turn it on ... fans full for approx 10 sec - then they go into a low mode ( not silent) ...
i had the camera outside today - 52 degrees and after 20 min silent mode went bye-bye ...
again is there a winter or summer thing with the air vents ?

Oh my god.. I hope this is just your camera and that you can get it fixed asap..
No one has a Red Drive yet..huh.. so we haven't had the real life test of: a full day of filming shots and sequences outside/inside on a summer's day then inside for an hour interview with no break.. Will the fans kick in? And does the Drive make any noise?
Also has anyone tested a shotgun mic mounted on the camera? Does the whine from the lcd make it unusable?
Good luck fixing yours..

Is there a spec on sound pressure levels? Such as ##dB or less at 3 feet from the camera? Did not see that listed under tech specs.

I am of the understanding that there are winter strips that come with the camera, though they should be in the box and not attached according to a post here some time ago.
Search for winter strips (both in your accessories box AND online) and that'll help you determine whether or not they've been accidentally fitted at manufacturing by Red (I remember it happened to someone else's camera on this forum).
I don't have my own camera yet to give you any more specifics sorry.
