This sounds like a nice little recorder for outboard use.
Listen to the track done with the SP-SPSM-13 mics.

Own it...Use it...Love it - Card, battery and usb port access are not well designed and the onboard effects are useless but it sounds quite good and the price is right.

However have been thinking about trying out one of these...

Cool, Haven't seen that one before. Kinda like the little brother of their $1,800.00 unit.

Here's a review if your interested. My original thought was that it would make a good backup when recording sound on the camera but the more I read about it I think I'll get one for open mic nites etc.

As far as I can tell from the spec sheets the main difference between the pcmd1 and the pcm50 (besides the $1100 price difference) is that the pcmd1 has LR vue meters, slightly better sound specs and phantom power. However with the cheaper pcm50 you get the added bonus of a 5 second prerecord buffer and adjustable xy positions on the mics.

I use it (the edirol r9) all of the time to record live musical performances as well as environmental recordings - It is a champ.

what is the frequency range you're interested in?

i'm interested in which mic would you use if you wanted to record, outdoors, some real low ULF? say 10 to 30Hz? say i had killer klipsch cornwalls speaker to play them on.

also let's say i a central location and wanted to record 5 channel, surround all at once? actor main voice on separate channel.

mics? sound processor?

Want some real ULF? How about the earthworks m50 (m550) - bottoms out at 3hz!

Maybe someone with more surround recording experience could comment on remote 5 channel capture. I am curious as well.

I have heard complaints about the digital metering on both the m-audio and the zoom hand held recorders - However, in the same price range the marantz pmd620 looks nice and the korg (for a bit more) looks good.
