Evin or anyone with indepth knowledge of Nikon lenses. Is a 180mm AI inferior, if so by how much, to a 180mm ED?

They use the same formula but the newer ED verison is better at controlling CA and contrast because of the Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) element. If you can afford it get the ED, but the AI is still a good lens.

Yup.
ED = GOOD.
Dispersion = BAD.
