I see many good Canon PL/MT lenses for 2/3 CMOS

Does anybody know about 35mm Canon PL/MT prime or zoom lenses?
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/industrial_bctv/pro_hdec.shtml

I am bit confused here, lenses description is for 2/3 but table is showing 35mm conversion. Does it mean that all these lenses can cover 35mm size of CMOS/film

These are B4 mount lenses for HD production. There will be B4 mount for Red but you will be liimited to 2K resolution. The 35mm conversion if for reference.

But I have heard that there are PL/MT Canon lenses for 35mm.
Is that true?

Andrew,

Just so you don't get fooled again, all cine mount lenses be they for a Mitchell, Panavision, Arriflex or CP-65 camera that have lens mounts that look like that have four ears.

I think at one point Canon did make the K35 series of cine lenses, I don't remember them being very well regarded, but I think hey were affordable.

And what is this Optex/Canon lenses, looks like it is PL mount?

Are there any PL mount zoom lenses with autofocus build in that doesn't require interaction with the cameara?

No auto focus in PL. Anywhere.

The century/optex is a rehoused Canon EOS lens, no electronics, and frankly not nearly as good optics as the Nikon.

Evin, I read all your posts so far and I still can't make my mind what is the best PL mount zoom lens, if money is not a big concern?

Andrew,

Take a look at the Arri vari-primes. This is a set of three short focal length range zooms that some say are the finest.

Aren't B4 lenses limited to 1080p RGB ?

Love the close focus spec. Does away with having to use diopters when you don't have the time to set up a proper macro shot. Keep in mind that it only covers ANSI S-35 (.980" x .736") which might limit it's use in some applications.

How the lens knows that we are shooting RGB?:-)

I think the only limitation of this B4 lenses is 2/3 size of illumination circle? so good for 16mm CMOS area (2K)
I like this side lens control where you could put your hand in to it.
And price is 1/2 of Arri lenses for the same job?

Evin, what if we rent you these lenses for few days for evaluation, do we have B4 to Nikon adapter?
(so you can plug it in to your Nikon)

century/schneideroptics make pl mount conversion lenses from Canon 35mm SLR lenses (as well as some other lenses) Not supercheap - i.e. $3500 - $15000. Here's a link:

I'm a century dealer but have mostly sold their converters for the HDV and HVX200 camcorders.

Not that I know of.

There are two issues with B4 lenses - one they are designed to cover the 11mm diagonal of a 2/3" chip (the chips aren't anything like 2/3" that goes back to the image size of the tubes which were 2/3" diameter but the light sensitive portion was 11mm diagonal), second the B4 lenses are designed to pass through a prism optical beam splitter before it reaches one of the three chips so it is a much longer effective optical distance to the chip.

I have read somewhere that there is an adapter made (for about $3500) that dealt with both issues - I looked at it online and it seemed that they were claiming it could be used on 35mm cinema.

It looks more complicated then I was thinking.
So if RED comes up with B4 mount then these lenses will be probably good to use for 2K work but no downres from 4K advantage.
The fact that it is designed for prism doesn’t really affect anything else but the FL, correct?
If Nicon lenses would have zoom/focus servo option this would be perfect. I wonder if someone is making strap on servos for lenses.

Do they have any Canon zoom lenses reengineered?

Brook Willard

No auto focus in PL. Anywhere.

LDS glass + Arri LDS box + CineTape + Arri LDS-FP can be set to "auto" focus ;)

As for Canon PL glass, I've used a Canon PL-mount T2.4 8-64mm CF21.5" zoom for S16mm. Yes, it's not S35mm, but it is cine glass. I'll have it in my posession tomorrow, I'll snag a picture. I've seen the same lens go to 7mm. I assume it's re-engineered.

Yes, the 17-35 T3 for $15,000. My question is why would you pay that for an inferior optic? Just because it has a PL mount? You will be able to attach servo controls to the Nikon and Canon FD still lenses for use with motors just like the Century.

Hi Evin,

It's not just PL mounted, it's rebuilt with new mechanics, using the glass elements from selection of zooms to optimise quality.

Evin, these servos are standard off the shelf product or it have to be specially made?
I presume you can put the same servo on the RED zoom?
I just can’t wait for RED zoom and if anything around 15K will do, I rather pay more and have it the same time together with the camera then have the camera and keep renting.
Mark may not agree with me but once in the caves down there you can’t pop up and change the lenses, also underwater you need the servos for focus zoom and aperture.
Otherwise you need 25mm for closeups and 90 for whole cave shots.

hi stephen!

yeah, you're there.. but people like me, Mr. Grant (Evin for some) and 99.9999% of the redusers here would prefer the economies of scale advantage.. to each his own.. :nerd:

If you're diving then the housing should have some facility to control, zoom, focus and Iris.

Once you put gears on the lens, like these...
http://www.zacuto.com/ZipGear_repeatable.jpg
You can attach a standard zoom motor to your rails. Or you could have a machinist make you a custom zoom motor holder for the lens for a few hundered bucks. Gear link...

If only someone will make custom enclosure for RED I hope there will be a support to drive the focus and aperture and maybe even the zoom.
But I don't count on it.
Look on this lenses drive.
Wonder what he is using here?

Text reads "CANON ZOOM LENS SC8X8 T2.4 FOR SUPER 16 NO.10039"

8-64mm, T2.4, CF21.5", PL-mount.

That lens was adapted from Arri bayonet to PL, but will work fine none the less.

Hi,

They can vary in quality and by how much they flair. A good one is very nice IMHO.
