View Full Version : RED Rocket, buying new vs. battle tested...

I am going to be purchasing a RR once I sort out which thunderbolt peripheral I'll be using it with (ie: once they are available) and I am torn between buying new vs. battle tested. I know that no matter what, an extended warranty is not available on these cards (which to me is a bit ridiculous, as it's still a $4,750 piece of equipment...) but alas, if I were to go with battle tested, my warranty is 90 days, and I have been unable to find what the warranty period is for the new version (I assume it is at least the same...)

Bottom line, is it an unwise choice to buy Battle Tested? Has anyone had a bad experience?

From speaking with people at RED directly, battle tested gear goes through a very demanding testing process to make sure everything works as is should, in most cases more thorough than with new equipment. I was basically told to buy battle tested whenever possible without fear as it's less expensive and ultimately a better tested product. This was in reference mainly to lenses and Red Rocket. Though I'm sure the philosophy runs across everything else. Makes sense if you ask me.

I bought a BT RR card two years ago and it has performed flawlessly. It's a vital piece of kit and it has worked hard.
