Just wondering if the Nikon mount will be available when the first 100 cameras ship around NAB time?

As all the features will not be available I'm afraid that I will not be able to shoot 2k with my Super16mm lenses so will have to use Nikon stills till I managed to get a set of RED Primes.

It's supposed to be available, yes.

And you should be able to shoot 2K REDCODE RAW. Most of the initial limitations are apparently related to RGB.

85% is almost there. I'm jealous for my #111, just eleven numbers above the line. Even if I was among the first #100, I don't know if I would wait or not but it is really tempting indeed.

I'm HOPING and GUESSING <$1,000! No one's mentioned a price, but I THINK Jim said it will be, "affordable," or something like that.

Jim said everything would be affordable and in-line with the camera price, which he said wouldn't go up when regular orders open up at NAB. I would think it would have to be very much below $1'000 to be considered in-line with the camera price.

Considering Evin's incredible Nikon lens evaluations and recommentations, I would think a great many Red users are interested in a Nikon mount. Next week is the Red Summit where (when) they will apparently be deciding of final prices for all accessories. One of the things to take into account here is the number of units made. Maybe we should take a poll as to how many reservation holders want a Nikon mount. Hopefully enough to drive the price down. Definitly count me in!

Anybody able to create some kind of counter for this, Jarred maybe?

Cheers,
Damien

I'll be using Nikon for the forseeable future. Probably the 17-35mm f2.8 along with a 50mm something. Most of the quality of major cinema lenses for a fraction of the price. Can't complain.

Any other CINE mounts confirmed?

BNCR, Arri bayonet etc

Medavoym -

I don't think so....I was looking for the BNCR mount but it doesn't look like it will happen right away. Understandably, the first priority is the camera. After NAB who knows!

If the nikon mount was in the region of $1000 I think many people might opt for cheap second hand PL cine lenses instead. I would expect it to come in less than that given the pricing of the rest.

I would be surprised if the Nikon mount is over $500. I may be a bit optimistic, but I'm expecting about $250. It will be interesting to see which lens options are available from RED for the first few months. If it's just the 300mm prime, I bet they will sell a ton of Nikon mounts. It's a lot cheaper to buy a Nikon mount and a 17-35mm Nikkor to use every day than it is to rent Cooke or Zeiss glass on occasion while we wait for the RED 18-85 lens.

I already have the Nikon 17-35 for my DSLR and it's a wonderful lens. I've pre-ordered the RED zoom, but if this Nikon lens proves to work well in most situations, and with a follow-focus and mattebox, I may hold off on that RED zoom and wait to see if they release a nice set of "affordable" primes.

The 17-35mm is around $1400 brand new. Is there any good used cine lens I can get for less than $2500? If so, please tell me where I can get one. I think the RED zoom will be wonderful, but $10K is a little too much for my budget right now.

ebay would be your best bet... But it seems like most of the good cine lens deals (which there aren't very many) tend to be 16mm and s16mm lenses. Occasionally a nice Cooke or Zeiss 35mm cine lens comes up, but all of those have sold for $8K or more that I'm aware of and I'm not sure what they would actually be worth as they weren't current models -- probably 20+ years old and they often look as if they were well-used for at least 18 of those 20 years.

Most notable among the additions planned for Final Cut Pro 6 will be the release of a new, hardware-accelerated version of the software dubbed Final Cut Extreme. Sources say Extreme is slated to ship later this year, likely in the summer, with a price range of $10,000 to $30,000, depending on configuration. With such a solution, Apple is gearing up to take on main rival Avid in the realm of high-end video editing systems.

Working in tandem with Apple's Mac Pro system, Final Cut Extreme will enable customers to work with uncompressed 4K and 2540p video, suitable for working with Red Digital Cinema's Red camera, which is also expected to be delivered at NAB, as well as the Panavision Genesis, Dalso Origin, Thompson Viper, Sony Cinealta, Phantom HD, and Arri D20 cameras.

If the Nikon mount is more than a couple hundred bucks, it'll be out of line.

Hi Paul,

Have been looking for a cheap second hand PL lens set myself for 10 years, never seen one!

What I'm hoping is....

Red prices all it's accessories to have the same impact as the Red One price did.... When I saw the price $17.5k, it took me all of about a split second to decide I was buying one.

I really don't know what it would cost to mass produce a Nikon mount.... But a small piece like a mount with no moving parts? It can't be that much if the number of units ordered is large enough.

What's interesting is that in the past all the cinema related companies knew they weren't going sell very many units, so they had to mark things way up. Red has the opposite marketing strategy, price low and sell many units.

If Red could sell the Nikon mount for a few hundred rather than $1k, EVERYONE would buy one just to have it in there kit. Even if they were planning to use cine glass most of the time, a reasonably priced Nikon mount would be a great back up for those with big budgets.

In fact, I will buy several mounts eventually (contax, cannon, etc. ) if the are priced low enough. Then I could raid my brothers closet, ( he's a pro still photographer ) he has a great collection of lenses I would love to try on my Red One.

Sorry for being off-topic, but I have to say this:

Apple should work on image sequence support first before people assume a work with material from those machines like the Genesis, Origin and D20 - thats what they output and the OS isn close to be able to handle big amounts of image sequences. Wonder if leopard changes anything about that. Knowing the OS well I doubt that.
Besides, thats what RED outputs in RAW mode too, not ?

We don't know the details of RED's uncompressed RAW output yet... Sequences or dtata stream, possibly either/both. Apple, especially with Leopard, is just as well equipped to handle image sequences as anyone else. Better than MS/Windows, IMO, now that they've got ZFS support with far more efficient drive management tools. So that's a big help on the OS level.

The rest really needs to come from software developers improving their own products, not just Apple.

Until now the OS doesn't.
It seems you never opened a big image sequence in Quicktime or FCP.
FCP doesn't support it, even the manual suggests importing sequences first in QT-Player to generate a QT-file.
And QT-PLayer sucks if you open a 10.000 image sequence.
Try it! Get a 20 min roll as image sequence to open in QT-Player.
Shake is the only app that handles such sequences, because it surpasses the finder dialog. Its not the file system itself, it the finder sitting on top.

Am I the only one who visits the RED store. Both the Nikon and Canon FD mounts are listed for $500. Don't jinx it by suggesting a higher price:blink:hehehe
