View Full Version : Red Alert makes audio vanish from proxies

So I have found that if i want to keep the audio from disappearing from my proxies, I have to deal with the way they look. If i do a quick grade in RedAlert and "make quicktimes" the audio vanishes.
Has anyone had any different experiences with the proxy audio and redalert or am i stuck with the way the proxies look for now?
I guess I can copy the audio before I grade them in RedAlert, and then paste the audio back into the clip after i grade them..
is this the correct way to go about this for now until the problem gets addressed?

That's what we've been doing. On the mac, we'll run a search to get all the clips in one window, then drag them into compressor and batch-output the audio files, do the CC in RA and the reconnect the audio when editing the proxies.
Hopefully that gets fixed soon.

So how can I recover the original proxies...the only ones with sound? I already overwrote them!

There's no audio support in any of the tools yet. The olveaudio is still in the R3D files but the functionality to generate the audio QT wrappers does in RedAlert does not exist yet. We're working on getting that resolved asap.

So as of this moment; there's no way to get that audio back?

Sorry, none at the moment.
It's at the top of our priority list.

Penfever, since they were quicktimes, maybe a data recovery app will find them?

You go back to the backup copy of those files that you made, right?

Set the QUICKTIME DESTINATION in RedAlert to someplace, anyplace before you make wrappers !!! Always !!!
Writing new wrappers to the same RDC folder (overwriting the camera generated QTs) is (IMHO) a big "no no".
I am of the school of thought that the RDC folder should not be changed in way, shape, or form through the entire post pipeline. This is the camera generated media and it should remain intact.
They REALLY should make Red Alert default the QT folder to the desktop.

zak -
if you are working with in camera audio now - I highly recommend that you take all the wrappers (1 from each RDC folder) and BATCH EXPORT audio only -.aiff audio files in Compressor 3.
This way, you have all your audio as separate files in case anything happens to your wrappers.
I assume you understand that the actual PCM audio is inside the .r3d file - RED just hasn't given you a tool to extract it yet - other than the wrappers made by the camera. But (hopefully) soon - you will be able to re-extract the audio you "erased".

Or at maybe have REDtools make it optional to lock the destination files when offloading....

Make a duplicate of the RDC folder and once you have that copy you can delete that folders QTs and open the copy R3D file in Red alert make new QTs into the copy folder. If you open the originals in a timeline in FCP just lay the new QT in a layer above and your audio should synch up perfectly.
Also you can just open up any of the QT proxies in QuickTime Player and export audio at original settings and have back ups.

I have some redcode files in a folder with no proxies generated from the camera, i think its from when the camera stopped recording due to ROCKETIO error. Now I have no way of getting this audio. No audio when i make a proxy with redalert. am i screwed until the next version of all this?

Is there a way to do this yet? I have a folder where the camera never made the qt files so I have no way to get the audio.

I also have this problem with a folder with about a 1.5 hour take (documentary). Been waiting for a couple weeks now for a solution....

If you don't spend half your life reading these threads, you get screwed.
just shot two days of audio drama to camera only - no DAT.
camera was giving codec errors so I turned quicktimes off as a possible solution... now cannot get audio out of quicktime proxys because Red hasn't provided that yet. Putting a 4k 16:9 (mute) proxy into the FCP timeline makes FCP crash with a dialogue box that says Redcode QT plugin may be to blame... just reinstalled QT plugin - makes no difference.
Besides all that, Redalert crashes almost every time I try to open a file. (am on QT 7.4.5)
Going to have to tell production right now that they will not be able to edit project now until red or someone else can solve this.
Fortunately this is a shot drama project without a deadline, but...
Happy happy days...
I'd really like to know an ETA on Redalert being able to export audio because I have people are going to want to know.
Trying very hard to not develop a bad attitude...

Quicktimes in camera were disabled.
Audio was enabled.
Red knows there is an issue here.
A warning in camera would have prevented a disaster here.
Of course a fix for this problem in RedAlert may be available before the camera's firmware is upgraded, but someone else may walk into the same trap tomorrow on another production.
A warning on the screen on the camera really would have been courteous.
Please Red - I for one would rather this kind of issue was truly made a top priority, rather than Scarlet , matteboxes, etc.

Deanan, it's been two and a half months since you posted this.
How difficult could it be to right the code to get Audio from a Quicktime proxy generated in Redalert, when the Camera can make one no problem?
If it's too much bother to fix this for now, then PLEASE remove the "make quicktime proxys" checkbox from the next camera build, so that other people do not end up in this situation.
EDIT:
I've just found that if I stick day 2's shots back onto the camera into the .RDM folder with day 2's shots, I can play them back in camera. So I'm having a cable made and we'll extract audio, make some audio files, and synch them up.
So no-one will die and my bad attitude is gone even before I had to get myself drunk. It's just a minor PITA.

I thought about doing that same thing as a temporary solution. Let me know how it works out. It would be a heck of a lot easier to be able to make QT proxies in Red Alert with the audio included.

So has anyone figured out how to get Compressor to not mix audio down to one track when extracting audio from the proxies to AIFF? Even when we set the AIFF settings to something that supports multiple tracks, we just get the same thing on every track. When exporting through QuickTime Player there's an option to export "discrete tracks", which does exactly what we need, but there's no such option in Compressor.
