No matter what the product, we always hear a lot about the problems, while completely satisfied customers are busy being.... Well... Satisfied and post nothing. This is a thread for those who have had no problems with compression artifacts, wierd shit downs or any other problems with their lovely new Epics. Please chime in. I think there are a lot of us.

Two Epics (M and X) have been busy making $$$ with nary a lost frame. Noise? Eh, when I really push the low light situations, sure, there's visible noise, but the Ninja takes care of it very nicely. No complaints here. Just wish Dragon, RedRay and Red Laser would come out soon. So glad I'm not shooting film any longer.

Seems a little silly just to have people chime in saying "no problem." I mean, we have been running our Epic regularly, but I wouldn't say we've been totally problem-free. We've had...
-Audio clicks (that we may need to send the Epic back)
-No phantom power so you can't plug a mic directly in
-Batteries that don't click in well into the side handle
-Occasional LCD screen-locks for no apparent reason
-Sensor reflection deal/flare gate (we haven't ordered our repair part)
So, none of these are deal-breakers or anything. We LOVE the Epic. But it definitely has a few bugs that I'm sure RED is still working out.

EPIC = Best-Camera-Ever!
Had the EPIC-M for nearly a year now. A couple firmware glitches early on, but practically real-time support and fixes from RED, including an on the fly firmware fix via Deanan (no long with RED) to address a fan issue.
Camera gets better with each new firmware release. All the features are not enabled, and yet the camera still oozes with sex and awesomeness.

7 EPIC cameras working since M8 was delivered in all conditions and al corners of the world, in the Snow in freezing weather, underwater in heated pool in Prototype housing, in the Desert sands in full blasting sun of summer, on airplane with open doors, on Choppers, you name it, only had one problem, which was a Bug in HDRx, that has been resolved.
RED EPIC? TRULY THE BEST CAMERA EVER MADE!!
NOt the words of a fun boy... But the words of a professional that has been making 10k per day working with Epic, and now can afford to make his own movie... ;)

3 Epics now and 1 M for one year or so.
3 Feature Films with our first M, some bugs solved by RED and a little upgrade problem about 7 months ago...
beside this I am a happy customer as always by the way.
I had no one problems with ours Ones too.
EPIC all the way.
Cheers

Just came back from a three day shoot - my first real shoot with the Epic. No problems. I know that this thread is not about this but I have to say it - this camera takes incredible images. It is an independent film makers dream come true.

- Very noise fan, the fan starts at 100% even during a shoot!!, auto or manual, 21º room temperature.
I think it´s my personal issue, reported to Red UK, and waiting for a reply.

Besides that.. 99% in love. Ergonomics, performance, I can´t imagine something better.

Vico. You should be having no issues with fan noise. I just conducted lots of interviews with the Epic in reasonably confined places and set the fan to what I wanted. No issue at all.

Kevin,
Audio clicks are a known firmware bug. The workaround for the moment is to put a little tape on the connectors for the PL lens mount and the clicks should be gone.
You can test the audio without lens attached and it should be no clicks.
Flare gate you get for free if you just send an email...
The other "problems" of yours are beta software things in other words some builds have the issues but it will blow over when the firmware is stable.

Sorry for the out of topic answer.
The issue with the fan noise @100% is when you shoot a long take (10-15 min) with the setting Fan put manually to 25%.
Use 30 or 35% whenever you know the sound guy will not hear it (90% of the time like exterior & normal sound conditions...)
Use 25+% when the sound mic is less than 1m away in a very quiet room (bathroom, bedroom with closed window...)
The 25% setting was not introduced in the first builds. It should be marked RED when dealing it taking the risk of a fan @100% during take. Green is above 35%.
Patrick
BTW It's a pleasure to shoot with this tool and to learn every day how to push the boundaries.

Rob, did you set your fan to shut off when recording? What setting do you normally use for interviews? quiet environment.?

Not a single issue with footage so far. No artifacts, no banding, no dropped frames. Everything has been perfect footage and media wise.
I've had audio clicks. Not with all microphones, usually with ones with larger body. Sometimes few glitches (all with workarounds, firmware v.3):
-When going back to recording mode after playback, preview can look weird (like half of the screen out of phase). Fix: always pause the playing back clip before going back to recording mode; if you want to reassure everything will be fine, also change to another clip before going to recording mode.
-"error playing clip" when trying to playback a very short clip immediately after recording it. Fix: Go back and forth from preview/recording mode.
-known redmote issues: the wireless connection is very unreliable.
So far I'm extremely happy with the Epic!

Works like a champ in all kinds of harsh conditions.
Only problem was noise, but black shading and firmware fixes it - so more user error than bug.

We had a problem with some purple pixels appearing in highlights straight out of the box. Had to send it straight back, got fixed and returned in just over a week. (We are in Norway btw)After that the only problem is that the LCD sometime are vertically divided after switching between play back and Rex many times quickly. That is a really minor issue IMHO and I have been shooting with the epic in the far north of Norway for 5 weeks, in snow storms, on the beach, from a helicopter using nothing but 2 rubber straps as a "gyro". I keep it in a backpack wile skiing or I'm skiing with it in my hand from location to location. Never had a problem on this production. The slowmo footage looks amazing, and now action shots in overcast wheather looks great as well thanks to 5K!The only time the EPIC came out short was when the northern lights came out. The Canon C300 excelled there.

Loving it and no problems except....
When doing time laps(ish) shots. Or very slow frame rates 1 fps and up to 6 or 8 fps I get a lot of what looks like red, blue, green pixels....
Other thank that all is good and if anyone knows how to fix those hot pixels... Please let me know..
Thank you again RED for such a great camera.

Define issues... :)
But really, I think a lot of the "issues" reported come from bad/lacking research and expectations.
Kinda:
When RED announces that the cam is in Beta, deal with that. And if you know what to expect featurewise, it is hard to be disappointed.
I have had oddities - firmware related, I have seen the powerspike bug and have had a couple of issues that first and foremost have resulted in RED not selling additional cameras, but didn't really affect me.
I had one weirdo, most likely related to a TC unit, but as there wasn't a DIT on set, the results were a bit disastrous (not my production, but one I work close to).
What I can say, is that I have never had such a fun cam in my hands untill I had the Epic comming...
Imagewise it s the champ. Then one can agree or disagree with the rest...
I tend to mostly be in the agreeable corner... :)
Love it, kinda

150 hours and 100% satisfied.
Maybe I do not have problems since I am reading all important news here as a frequent forum user.
Phantom power or lack of it is a drag, especially in light weight configuration but I will call it feature not enabled rather than problem.
Problem is when something doesn’t work as expected, I guess I expected that some features are not enabled if I want to get it before all feature enabled camera will ship.
It is difficult to expect something what is not there if you come here to this forum once every few days:-)

+1 on the lack of phantom power; this shouldn't be hard, RED guys - please get it in next firmware!
+1 on the lack of any other problems. In the last month I've shot three feet from 2000F flowing lava in Hawai'i, and froze my butt off on Icelandic glaciers; I suffered but the EPIC never missed a beat.

Any idea when the firmware will allow either:
a) pre-roll, or
b) the ability to delete clips from the camera
One or other of these is essential for shooting unpredicatable events, where you might be waiting hours for something to happen.

first i got my scarlet-x. NO PROBLEM WITH HER (ivanka)
then i got my epic-x (istvan). screwed the side ssd on it, screwed the 5" touch lcd on.
powered up the camera and: the 5" touch lcd was remaining black. external monitor showed a picture and menu. attached the redmote and tried to do a firmware update, but the camera said: no media. sadly i contacted red uk.
one day after receiving my epic-x i had to send it back to red uk. three people at red u.k. were taking care of my camera, and 3 days later i had it back in vienna. a few hours at red uk and two days for transport. the doctors and nurses at red did a good job and healed istvan as they promised me on the phone and via email.
i will not think about having a problem with a sony or a canon camera. uuuuuhhhh...
thanks again alan, sam, paul, chris and ivan. and all the others in the second row who are keeping the systems running. a big thank you.
since then: no problems.
it was the best decision i ever made. to go the red way.
the two cameras i own, istvan and ivanka, are the BEST cameras i ever owned.
thanks red.
