View Full Version : My QT Freeze Frame Issue Resolved

I felt like the resolution to this needed its own thread since it seemed many were struggling with the QT freeze frame issue.
My solution for PC world:
Delete all folders and files located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\REDCINE
Uninstall redcine
Uninstall qt 7.4
Install QT 7.31
Install Redcine
Export successfully
Tears of Joy
Follow these simple rules:
Rule #1: No mixing source formats in the output of redcine, only load files of the same frames size and frame rate into the library. When I generated output which spanned 2 different formats it caused the single frame freeze after x# of frames issue for me. Also mixing formats in the library caused major instability in redcine for me - no probs if all files are of the same format.
Rule #2: The project format settings in Redcine must match the format of the source shots. If you are working with a 4k 2:1 file your project format setting must be 4k 2:1 - Having the project format settings set differently from the file format was the cause of the single frame QT output.
Rule #3: for maximum Redcine stability keep the QT player closed when working in Redcine and as I said before do not load source files with different formats into redcine.
No more frozen frames for me. Hope this helps anyone else out there trying to resolve this.

Deleting everything in Application Data seems like a good idea each time you install new builds.
I installed the new build (082) and it would quit after the splash screen until I followed the "delete App Data, uninstall RedCine, reinstall RedCine" method.

Just as a note: The newest Redcine build (82) fixes most of the mixed format instability & single frame issues.

RFO, I still find Red Cine Build 82 still has Freeze frame issues, though exporting mixed formats seems to be exporting fine, playback the clips shows random freezing =(. what type of setup are you using?

Hi to all,
good advise welcomed! REDCINE QT out is giving me a freeze frame output whatever I try. In fact if I select a portion of the clip to be transfered to QT REDCINE seems to be doing it, but the result is a clip long freeze frame from the beginning of the source clip, not from my selection!?
I have an Intel Macbook Pro. Tried QT 7.4.0 and downgraded to 7.3.1 with same results (well not quite, cause now my FCP doesn't work either!) Anybody, who has solved this?

Harryclark was having similar issues - seems he trashed and then reinstalled redcine (deleting the preferences folder too I believe) and that fixed things for him.

Thank you Rfo, this is excellent advice and pretty much standard procedure if you are experiencing issues with Redcine on Mac or PC.

I've got a question...currently cutting a Super16 feature (off line edit in Avid, 23.976 project). The director just went out for inserts and used RED. What export settings from REDCINE would be best to match the Super16 frame size?

to match the dof he should shoot in 2k, i would prefer 3k and downscaling...

Hey guys, I have done everything that was detailed in the first post (uninstalling QT 7.4, uninstalling RedCine, and reinstalling RedCine and QT 7.3.1, and deleting all the files in the RED folder, etc...) and when I export to QT I get a single pink frame, which turns out to be almost 7gb in size.
Are there any other suggestions out there? What's the Magic Bullet?
Thanks for your help.

Followed all these instructions and it's still not working for me. Used to work a few weeks ago so it's confusing me why it'd stop working all of a sudden.

The solution I detailed was for an earlier version of redcine on PC - after the latest version of redcine was released I have had no further single frame issues. It seems there is a separate issue with the single frame issue on Macs.

Thanks for the info. I've been searching this forum now for a day and a half and still can't find a solution that works for Mac. I've run through all options on two different Intel Mac Pros to no avail. I want to make sure that Red Cine works so that I can conform using Crimson at the end of this job.

So I fixed my issue with an annoying work around. I used FCP and Crimson to split up my renders into 11 smaller chunks and Red Cine finally rendered my stuff with no problem. Red Cine is so buggy that I had to make everything really small (4 to 10 shots per session) to ensure that the renders were going through okay.

Hi
Thanks for all the great replies. It is good to see that I am not the only one struggling with Redcine.
I am going to be a post producer on a independent production that will be shot on red camera, edited on an avid and onlined and graded in scratch.
And we want to keep working with files all the way - which is why Redcine is a really good tool of exporting all the rawfootage to quicktimes that Avid understands, and at the same time keeping the filenames - so the online process in the scratch will run smooth.
My problem is that when I export more than two quicktimes the third, fourth etc. quicktime freeze-frame. Have anyone stumbled upon this problem?
Best,
Morten

For Macs:
Uninstall RedCine (Delete from Applications Folder)
Delete /Library/RedCine Directory (*-Critical Step)
Download and Install Newest Version of RedCine v3.0.8 build 108
See if that works

RFO,
Are you still using QT 7.3.1? I just shot a music video and have tons of footage to convert and I'm getting the still frame issue. I also downloaded the latest build of RedCine and it seems the problem got worse, however I'm still running QT 7.4.1.

Oh my god, thanks for uploading this tip man you genius. Thanks to Pacifist software too!!!! I just downgraded quicktime and tested the Red Rushes and Red Cine application. Flawless. AWESOMEEEEE
Red Rushes read the RSX file and processed accordingly. Awesome.
THANKS THANKS, red has no manual but an amazing group of people helping each other. Unbelievable.

I'm using a pc too, and first tried with the latest redcine and latest QT.
The only thing I got was a still, rose (still) frame.
Then I tried as stated in the first post , but still have the same result (whatever QT codec I take)
When taking a snap hot I also get a pink image.(snap mode view)
Then I also downgraded redcine to version 3.08.
When taking a snap shot in "snap mode" view , I get a good picture.
When taking a snap shot in "snap mode" image , I get a bad picture.
rendering doesn't give me a rose picture anymore, but just the same bad (still) picture.
I don't know if I can try something else ?
I guess it's the combination of the correct redcine with the correct QT version ?

Hi guys, thanks to the tips i always manage now to get rid of the Freezeframe bug by deleting the REDCINE Settings Folder, and making a new Project, but then of course i loose my old project and have to do all work again.
When i save my long worked on Pregraded Project that is "broken" occasionally ( dont know the specific reason for it, other than I openend and closed the Project often, did a lot of saving and loading rcc Look files and a lot of Saving the RCN file manually not so much trusting autosave (sorry). ) out of REDCINE, then trash all Settings in the Settings Folder and reopen the saved RCN Project, it keeps doing Freeze framing the First Frame.
The same freezing First frame also always occurs when i open more than (one?) clip in the "timeline" and set in and outpoints anyhwere. Then my rendering always is a freeze frame.
It could be that this it only occurs when i loaded 5 or 10 or more clips, i cant quite say for sure. At least with one clip and either with or without In / outs it always works.
Windows XP 32 SP2, AMD X2 3800+, Geforce 7600.
