Most notable among the additions planned for Final Cut Pro 6 will be the release of a new, hardware-accelerated version of the software dubbed Final Cut Extreme. Sources say Extreme is slated to ship later this year, likely in the summer, with a price range of $10,000 to $30,000, depending on configuration. With such a solution, Apple is gearing up to take on main rival Avid in the realm of high-end video editing systems.
Working in tandem with Apple's Mac Pro system, Final Cut Extreme will enable customers to work with uncompressed 4K and 2540p video, suitable for working with Red Digital Cinema's Red camera, which is also expected to be delivered at NAB, as well as the Panavision Genesis, Dalso Origin, Thompson Viper, Sony Cinealta, Phantom HD, and Arri D20 cameras.

Oh come on. That's just a reprint, almost word for word, of the
highly inaccurate (and very, very unlikely to be even close to
anything) Think Secret article from last week.
Don't waste your time even reading it.

Great! The RED camera is indeed Apple's ticket into the highend realm of digital film-making.
I noticed how they mispelled Dalsa too.

While only Apple and maybe RED know for sure, I would bet the reality is close to the myth.

my opinion - just a reprint of their wildly erroneous rumors going back a year. I give it no credibility. Anything they might happen to get right would be just dumb pure luck and wild guessing. But I give these guys loooooow credibility.

Why all the skepticism? This is exactly what Apple is bringing out. A high-end hardware-software vid editing system. If a couple tiny specs are off - who cares?

Think Secret floated this a year ago.
I am sure Final Cut 6 will debut since last year was kind of a dud but $10,000-$30,000 would pretty much blow Apple's long running strategy of FCP as an edit system "for the masses".

it's kind of a non-issue. i'm locked into fcp and have taken the red plunge. if either system completely fell apart and ceased to exist, i would still go on shooting/making films with one of the systems and a competing system. if both suddenly died, i might take a lengthy pause before picking replacements (mostly because of a need for grieving period). but if both systems meet in that magic 4k workspace (of course they will sooner or later), all the better. in the meantime, i'll be shooting 4k and editing in 1080p. not bad for a digital cimema "hobbyist".

The rumor mentions that apple will release a card with 4 SDI i/o. I hardly believe apple would get into that market. I can understand accelerating FCE but a i/o box. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I guess I'd feel like shit if they did release one bc I just bought the Kona 3 last week. And who needs 4k anyway.

i agree they'll just keep posting this until it comes true. BUT, if it is true and the price range is "$10K to $30K, depending on configuration", guess which side of the price range the "uncompressed 4K" is going to be on?

If Apple does release an I/O system 4xSDI capable of 4K, I guess I'd have to find a way to afford the Sony 4K projector. ;)
And if Apple cripples any of their lower offerings to force certain users to buy the high end, then they're going to lose a lot of customers.
Thing is, branding wise, apple would never name a product "extreme". Just because a system is intended for professional highend use does nto make it "EXTREEME!". This isnt a gaming system!

I agree! That's why I know Apple isin't going to do that. Jobs is a genius.

I'll echo Mike's sentiments regarding Think Secret's credibility...non-existant.

Yep, have to agree with acehole... Apple wouldn't call it "Extreme". I think that if Apple does offer a system like this, it's going to be a rebranded or customized version of a third-party solution like a Kona3 card. They'll package it with a fiber-channel controller and XServe RAID and offer it as an optional bundle upgrade to FCP users. In this context it would make sense. It would really be nice if they started shipping multi-channel FC controllers, FC switches and upgraded Xserve hardware with better connectivity options. The current than dual 2Gbps fiber ports is so 2005... They need to adjust those XServe RAID prices too! OMFG!!! Those prices were expensive two years ago... The 14x500GB config has only dropped in price about $800 since they first offered it almost 2 years ago.

Only another aka new software/version would legitimate another product, not a hardware bundle what everybody can buy already and was promoted by Apple since 3 years anyway !?
And I wouldn't believe they rebrand a product from Kona. Thats not really inline with Apples product philosophy and hence supports the thoughts of a crappy article.
Why all the skepticism? This is exactly what Apple is bringing out. A high-end hardware-software vid editing system. If a couple tiny specs are off - who cares?
Because they have a system already. Working resolution independent. And not bug-free yet. I could imagine a modularity for Pro or if you like "Extreme" uses. Like the color-correction they bought from FinalTouch. Still wonder if it will be included or separate. Or if they just acquired the knowledge.
Thing is, branding wise, apple would never name a product "extreme". Just because a system is intended for professional highend use does nto make it "EXTREEME!". This isnt a gaming system!
They use Express and Extreme already. TAL at Airport!
