i just received a Red Drive ..

i slide it into the craddle ...i see there are two screws on each side of the craddle that adjust the 2 inner rails and they are suppose to do what ??

they do not secure the drive , the drive slides in/out whether they are tighten or loose ...

what am i not seeing ?
or is the drive suppose to be loose in craddle ( held in by gravity only)

My drives just cleared customs and will be here tomorrow afternoon. I'll take a look as perhaps you're missing a piece.

I see exactly what you mean. I used one of my extra long velcro wraps from my location audio kit.

mine fit perfectly and lock down with the screws on the side.

That's what is supposed to happen but the construction is not consistent.

I dont understand how it doesnt work, does yours have rails on the side?
Its a very simple design, the screw pushes the rail against the drive, which holds it in place. The only thing that I could possible see is if the screw is too short or the rail is missing. I cant imaging the box is a different size.

Upon further review-
some drives work, some dont. I have one drive that locks down tight, another that does not. I cant see any difference between the two.

The problem seems to be with the drive enclosure.

Its either too short of screws or too wide of cradle because even with the screws reefed right in where the rails are supposed to hold drive tight the drive slides in and out with no force applied by the rails at all.

"Its a very simple design, the screw pushes the rail against the drive, which holds it in place"

the screws PUSHING pressure on the rails toward the drive would work ...BUT
sounds liek your's is a different design ...
the way the one i have here works .. tightening the screw PULLS ( they do not push here ) the rails back toward the craddle body ( toward head of screw) ... this puts pressure on the inner sleeve/slot of the hard drive ..
so the hard drive is held in by the rail pressure outward (away from hard drive body - not inward toward the hard drive body) ...

IMO section between the 2 red lines needs to be less ( shorter) so when you tighten it - the rail pulls back toward craddle body a little more

There are two different versions of the guide rails. The earlier version was flat, the later version is T sectioned.

In the first version you pushed the guide way from the cradle to lock the drive, in the later version you pull the guide towards the cradle.

So does that mean in one version, you turn the screws clockwise to lock and the other you turn anticlockwise???

Are the two drives or cages backward / forward compatible? If one has both generation drives, one locks the other won't? This sounds like the case with Greg.

Imagine the rental house with several different generations on hand. What would it take to make them interchangeable AND be secured in place? :waaa:

The cradle I have uses the T shaped rail but even with the screws tightened all the way it makes no difference. The bottom of the T is against the side of the cradle but the height of the T still doesn't have the top of the T pulling against the channel in the drive.

The design idea might be simple but somewhere in the cradle size, drive channel and T-Bar system there are inconsistencies of manufacture. I wrapped a velcro strip around the assembly and moved on.

there are multiple ways to fix this but at least one of these items were rushed out the door without thorough inspection. i had to fix mine with some simple nylon inserts down the bracket to tighten it temporarily but i would like a real fix from red. unfortunately, i can't go without the cradle this weekend as i've got a shoot.

Red told me they are on it and will ship a fix asap.

Hey digiFX did you call red support? Our drives slide too no matter how much I tighten the thumb screws- are they replacing the cradle or the drives?

Thanks- J.D.

IMO, only the 2 T rails ( on the craddle) need to be replaced ( and maybe the 4 screws)

I would assume the rails are all that needs replacing as well.

A quick fix is to flip the t rails around. Instead of having the top portion of the t in the drive's groove, flip it so that its on the side closest to the screws. Put the drive in and then loosen the screws to press the lower section of the t rails into the groove in the drive. Works well but not as red originally intended.

i think there are 2 models ...
1) pushes pressure on rails into the slot on drive housing - guessing i would say these might have threads in the screw holes on craddle ...
2) the other pulls on the rails - the craddle screw holes do not have threads in the holes (craddle) so the screws fall i/o of craddle - so if you turn to loosen there's just more loose play ...

So frustrating, such a simple piece of hardware, and so many faulty drive cradles, frustrating.......
