Speaking of RCXp, any chance it'll become (massively) multi-threaded at some point? Even if it's just in the batch-rendering department (rather than having to do it command-line style.) Or possibly GPU-acceleration as an interim solution for those that don't quite need an RR?

Question / sugeston.

If no still mode. Could you not let us address the side handle red button to a "marker" it would be great even for motion. just push that button while recording and the current recorded frame gets a tag. thats' possible to jump to in red cine x pro then the still photo guys that want to snap frames can do that all they want while the camera is in record mode. For motion I would like to do the same for the good takes. Even give the director the red mote so he can trough in tag marks for good moments in the takes...

that is exactly the way its going to work...

Wonderful thread and answers. Thanks Jarred.

Is there a Redrocket 2 around the corner?

Not in the near future. I am sure there will be one someday.... but not anytime soon. The RedRocket still is killing it.. and if you want faster just put 2 into your system :)

RCP-X is one of the products we make that Personally Jim and I are most proud of. What our RC-X team has accomplished is incredible.. There is alot of stuff coming.. alot of really cool stuff.

I promise you almost every request for RC-X stuff in this thread has already been on their list. That doesn't mean it will ever get released.. but they are thinking about it. all of it.

Best thread EVER.

Random question. Can you set the power/record button to Only be power? Last time I tried couldn't get it to work.

I keep hearing about these sensor NDs and in the button assigning menus you can choose ND related commands. How will these NDs work?

Also I'm so psyched about how you guys operate :D growing up in a society based on "disposable" products I can't tell you how highly I regard upgradability and craftsmen ship. Thank You

Any plans on upgrading the frame rate past 300 any time on the EPIC? I want 1000fps, but I don't want to spend as much as vision research want me to spend on the phantom camera line, with their 3.0MP cameras.....

Gyro and Accelerometers = in camera image stabilization

shoot at 4k with a 5k frame of "give".

That would be beast.

Is there a chance we'll see a "Scarlet Spec Series" of SSDs, not just the 32gb, but 64, 128, 256 priced accordingly?

Not that it's needed, but does that mean HDRx on Dragon will go up to 21+ stops?

What is the native ISO of Dragon? What is the ballpark cost for Scarlet-to-Dragon at this point?

+1 on this. Would be great for 80% of jobs/markets that don't require varispeed. If they can support the highest resolution of Red MX/Scarlet/Epic/Maybe Dragon, but only up to say 30fps max (although more would of course be awesome), and be much more affordable, that would help everyone on tight budgets, and even the big productions who don't need varispeed. It would also use up SSDs which didn't make the grade for varispeed. We could then just buy/hire full speed media when varispeed is required.

No doubt! Come to think of it though, it doesn't need to be in camera, but in RCX-Pro. I wonder how useful that data will be to motion tracking. "You want to comp this in where, here? Bang! It's done!""I know it's a hand held shot, but seriously, it's done."

Is that what this would be for? I'm not sure if that was a serious comment from Jarred and if so, what it would be used for. If they did have stabilization, that would truly rock.

Jarred:
Will the still mode show exposure time differently than in motion?
Generally when you press the shutter and take a picture you have 3 seconds on the camera monitor to review, would this be an option on EPIC?
Also when you half press the shutter button a focus check is done, could this be as an option?
Why was the side handle slide discharged?
How do you sync flashes with a tool like the pocket wizard?
Thanks so much for your time!
I wish I could be there partying at NAB!

Not answering that one yet :)

If you answered them all, I'd have nothing to look forward to but actually using what I have, eh?

This is f***ing awesome.

Jarred, I'm assuming the OLPF ND thing would filter out IR accordingly, yes? Will we have to swap it out manually with the screws or will they just pop out some easier way?

Oh, and I see the Leica mount has a caveat of not using anything wider than 50mm... will there be the possibility of a brain modification to allow this to not be an issue?

Loving every second of my Scarlet. It's so much cooler to be an owner and not just a watcher like I was since 2006!

Björn Benckert
04-17-2012, 03:45 PM
that is exactly the way its going to work...

Super Nice, I think the "Mark good" function will become crucial when you guys keep on making these SSD's bigger and bigger.. :)

Another similar function would be... mark take as "useful" before stop record... address a hotkey so when pushed the shot shines green or such in red cine X.
Then for some shoots we would only need to proxy render some takes and leave the r3d's for the marked "not so god takes"....

But leave that for now Jared, I think you and the guys should go have drinks or at least some good sleep, you need to do nothing more, NAB 2012 would still be red with no other color shining trough.

You guys will win so big so it will spill over to all of us, Thanks a million... and that is an understatement, even when counting in US currency for our part. :)

Patrick Grossien

It 's most likely applicable in red cine or I guess any software that can project the image on a plane and re shoot it with a slightly more narrow FOV with reversed jitter on the pan, tilt and scale..

the little switch on the front of the handle that goes from motion to stills. That switch will likely just be a change between two different presets.

Interesting. This might be a really nice way to switch between record and playback on the fly through a preset.

Excellent! You just saved my Set Data Collector and myself from taking those measurements!

RCP-X is one of the products we make that Personally Jim and I are most proud of.

RCP-X is ridiculously powerful and free even if you aren't a Red owner. As many licenses as you want. Rough Edit, Color Correct, Grade, Transcode, Audio Sync, and export all in one package. That's a hell of a deal.

Jarred, Hats off to Jim and you and the whole RED team! Great news from NAB!

The Gyros sound like they will assist with Tracking shots for matchmoving. Just what I need.

Will my EPIC be able to locate itself against a monument point for 3D in the future?

if technically possible, any plan of having
optional recording in Scarlet.... RAW and high bit .mov
some sort of reduced fan noise and a raised cover over fan vents so that hot hair does not enter sensitive nostrils:-)
light weight,Auto focus PL mount 18-85 zoom lens(if yes, please give us some rough date/month/year)
new Red rocket if coming out, pleaseeeeee give us some rough date/month.

Any chance for a RED Drudge (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?75284-Boxes-I-d-like-RED-to-make)?

Two little boxes that would make my life easier:

1) The Swapper: Plugs into the EVC/LCD port of the brain, has two outputs for the LCD and EVF and one button. The button toggles between the LCD and EVF. Ability to use EVF and LCD without having to unplug/reboot.

2) The Drudge: Same form factor as the RED station; has two inputs and three outputs. Once a SSD is connected to an input and at least one HDD/SSD to the output, it starts copying with a checksum. Green LED flashes on each port during transfer. Lights green when everything is copied and checked. Make backups in the field without the need for a laptop.

I'd love to know if there are any internal (or module) proxy solutions on the way. On board simultaneous ProRes or DNXHD proxies would be amazing, a module that records proxies to SSD Mags or CF cards would be great as well. Any info on something like this?

Would that aspect ratio/crop be possible with current hardware?

If I run back across the street to NAB and slip my existing EVF BOMB rolled up in a wad of 12 benjamins, *theoretically*, could I leave with an OLED in hand? Jarred, POWER MANAGEMENT is the single biggest thing I want/need. I'm surprised that it has been pushed down there. Please make it a priority. There is a lot of us who shoot in the natural world, and it pains me watch the battery levels drop so quickly. I'm about to head out to Africa to shoot for two week, 7 days of which are remote camping. NO POWER!!! I have to resort to using a crappy canon when my power dies. I'll be saying bad things about you, and will be thinking about sending an army of elephants your way. :mad5:

There are a some of us using old EVFs with Epic.
Is there an upgrade path for old EVF? Or some code in next build so we don't have to start the camera three times in order to get EVF going?

We are ramping up production again on the RPP lenses... so we expect to be out of backorder on them in a few months. We sold more of the RPP's than we ever thought we would so our sales forecast planning went to shit. For price/performance the RPP's still to this day are hard to beat... so we are bringing them back up by popular demand.
Thanks much ! I think the RPP is the best price/performance lens out there, and the Indie's really appreciate it.

Can two +1 Monitor Adapters be used?

What is the max number of LCD/EVF outputs we can have functional?

Does it matter which order modules are connected. For example, do we have to have the battery modules after the Pro I/O module? Or can we put them in any order as long as the Module Adapter or +1 Monitor Adapter are first?

Thanks for answering all our questions!

Not OLED for the big monitors. Right now big OLED displays consume way too much power.

7" is 1024 x 600
9" is 1280 x 784

I was going to come but had to work on a few projects here in NY.... Means a lot that you guys keep the forum in the loop and don't forget about us. I shall be there next year!

Any chance for a thunderbolt module, allowing to steal some camera horsepower... occasionally I find myself with my camera away from my higher end systems with just a mac and a camera (mostly scarlet, but sometimes epic) and want to review footage, play with RCX, and just get a little work done while I wait for whatever it is I'm waiting for. It'd be nice to be able to whip out a module from the kit, slap it on the back of the camera and have the ability to steal some of that glorious horsepower since the camera itself is capable of debarring footage in a real time...

Just something I've been thinking about lately that I thought would be a cool add on to the cameras.

You guys rock. Even in the middle of the biggest event in the industry you find time to address us on the net. A sincere thank you and more and more reasons to be a happy costumer, supporter and advocate for this unique company.

My questions are a bit "hard", however, hope you can handle them! :)

First warm up:

You talked about additional frame rates like 400 for the Epic. These will require the turbo cards? Any chance for an increase to 100 fps In 5K FF? This is the magic number for PAL...

2- What redcine x features can we expect in the near future? We got recently a handy "unsharp mask" option. Any special "effects" like vigneting, even masks for area specific cc?

EDIT 2.1 - any chance you guys make a couple of free RMD presets based in some looks and best practices provided by your collaborators like light iron or the great Graeme Natress? These could be nice starting points for some grading decisions and quick workflows... Please do it!

And now the hard, almost sure not to get an answer part :)

Apple is saying future FCPX r3d support. Are you guys getting a different vibe from them, are you working together on this or are they again doing everything without talking with you guys? Can we expect something good for this?
Obviously Premiere an Adobe are the partners of choice for Red material right now, but what do you have to say about Red and the new smoke and the new FCPX?

A small concern: I bought red armor, started I believe in February. Will upgrade to Dragon as soon as possible. What happens to red armor after the dragon install? We won't lose the armor, right?

Thanks Jarred and congratulations to the red team for such a successful event!

PS- You are being conservative with the Dragon's features, aren't you ? It sounds Excelent but I would think that you have something extra under your sleeve... :)

normal RealD glasses will work.. you just get some ghosting that you have all seen before. The best glasses are ones that are matched to the screen and the projector, and there will be ones matched to the REDray Laser projector in disposable, cheap, and expensive version.

Jarred,

It was great seeing you guys at NAB, said hi to you and Jim, and yes I did open my wallet just a little bit :-)

Ballsy of you to show an alpha/beta product (the projector), as Jim explained it... I think we all got it. Thank you.

I'm going to ask a delicate, somewhat provocative question.

Jim spoke from the heart at the REDuser about RED, at the REDuser party, and about transparency. You are transparent, almost painfully so at time; thank you for that.

But less so in technical matters at time... of course you have secret sauce you have to keep secret, we all understand that. But would you be willing to be more open in the future about such things as pinouts and protocols? I'd love to see what companies like RedRock, Cinema Oxide, Viewfactor, and many others could do in terms of making alternative accessories - their take on side handle designs, alternative storage devices in side or rear modules, Redmote alternatives etc. etc. Can you be more open about that tech stuff without endangering your IP, product reputation, or profit margins?

Data gets saved as metadata, and can be pumped in to Nuke, Flame, etc. to provide a digital camera. Makes it monumentally easier to comp in objects if you don't have to do a 3D track and figure out that data. Also don't have to add tracking markers into your scene that you later paint out. There are tripod systems and the like that can be added on to any camera and provide this data, but they are costly.

Sooooo take what you would have spent on a tripod head that records pitch, tilt, and yaw, as well as somehow tracking position, and put it in your pocket. That's what Red just did. Your camera will quite literally be worth more than it is right now, within a few weeks, and more and more as they get better and better at tracking this data with future firmware updates.

Having these sensors could (and this is pure speculation on my part and would need a few additional pieces of hardware anyway) also potentially open the door to motion control ("moco"), depending on what other accessories Red comes out with in the future.

We will let those guys speak when they are ready :)

I normally try to avoid adding to the back half of the signal/noise ratio, but I have to say:
If gyro metadata eliminates the incredibly time-consuming process of image analysis for motion tracking, that's one fantastic leap forward. I always imagined it would come, but didn't think it was actually in development.

Also, a few questions/comments I didn't get a chance to ask (you were pretty swamped when I was in the booth). Apologies if they've been covered already... I did look, but I haven't had the time to go through every page of every NAB post.
a) it'd be lovely to see the RCX SDK incorporated into Iridas, now that it's part of CS6. There will always be a need for RCX, but it'd be nice to leverage the cross-app suite integration that Adobe is really excelling at.
b) now that there's a forthcoming OLED EVF, what's the status on dealing with the dreaded milky blacks on the current EVF? It's my only display (waiting for the 9"... my eyes are too old for 5") and honestly, it's almost impossible to figure out what you're actually getting.
c) will the new Turbo SSDs also offload media at 'turbo' speeds? (I'm assuming there will be a Thunderbolt media reader, which means we'll no longer be throttled by the FW800 speed limit...?)

Pretty wonderful set of announcements. Great party, too. Big thanks for that.

Talking about different battery modules - if anything I would really like to see a rear-facing module that will clip on the back of the camera and allow for 2x REDVOLTs or 1x REDVOLT-XL to be inserted from the rear - just the way the RED BRICK snaps onto the Meizler module, if you catch my drift...

And talking about power - more people should be pushing up the POWER MANAGEMENT priority. If bunch of elephants from Africa can scare Jarred to push it up by 10 notches - if we all attack with all we have got - it should be done yesterday...
I am willing to send group of agents hiring for Japanese Game Shows (that alone should scare up 100 notches), followed by couple of "elder" ladies from Kansai area (which should just about kill any queue left...)

And YES - big THANK YOU to Jarred for this (and other) threads and the whole RED TEAM for the great work...

Based on earlier comments I have a feeling this has already crossed their minds, but one has to be careful with how many "rear facing" modules are designed... you can only have one in the chain and you restrict the use of other terminating devices like the REDMOTE. Of course you could clamp a REDMOTE somewhere else, but that means it won't be getting charged... and the battery life of the 'mote is pretty limited as it is. Mostly, though, I'm curious what such a module would net you besides a minor amount of length (which would be negated with the use of an XL battery). Not criticizing, just curious.

Mr. Land,

I apologize for asking more than one question, and this question but I have come up with a second one.

Can you add more than one SSD module onto a camera, and choose your poison on how they interact with each other? Say, either spanning or instant back up?

spanning for now..

Next build will also have " Target Redcode " where you set your target and it will get as close to it as possible. This allows you to switch to a higher framerate, shoot at maximum redcode, then switch back to a normal frame rate and it will automatically jump back to that target. No more " damn switched back to 24fps and left it at 12:1 "

I personally started my carrer as photographer and believe that there is a a lot of difference between the two businesses....I am sorry but I still wish that the camera will be enable as still camera...it was one of the reasons why I chose Scarlet! having to choose between minutes of footage for a good photo is a lot different and especially thinking about the precision and the suspense of one and single shot! Many big photographer as Mario Testino like to prepare and wait for the right moment...I feel photography is a pistol...a rifle...a shot gun that has one bullet...not sure how to explain.... but it is really a different feeling and I think should be kept in that way....thanks and much love and respect to the RED TEAM!

Hey Marcello I think i may of done a bad job explaining this.. you can still use both the Scarlet and the Epic as a single frame traditional camera... still photographers have just evolved into using the camera in a different way so the way the menus work has changed a little bit, giving people an easier way to shoot motion and pull stills as a primary function. But by all means you will still be able to set the camera just to take a single still when you press the record button.

Quite excited about all the new things coming up - things I didn't even know were sitting waiting for firmware updates ( gyros etc..). I pushed hard for the Epic on the job I am starting, which is quite heavy on VFX and if all comes to fruition that is promised for the next build then I will be a happy boy. Nothing like going to production and saying, here's something new that will save you a few $$.

Mostly, though, I'm curious what such a module would net you besides a minor amount of length (which would be negated with the use of an XL battery). Not criticizing, just curious.

Häakon - I appreciate Your feedback. Actually the size is reduced dramatically. You could end up with about the same depth as with the dual module - which does not take the XL batteries - only the quad does and that one is huge. Also You will overcome the problem where installing the XL battery on the left side will prevent ejection of the SSD. Such a module would be the smallest possible allowing the use of both normal and XL batteries...

About the REDMOTE - I find the battery sufficient for a day's shooting - if you use the REDMOTE only when you really need it. I see people using the REDMOTE...
But every problem has a solution - such a module could have a powered dock for the REDMOTE on either left or (preferably) right side, which could charge the REDMOTE...

Jarred? Any "hehehe"?

I have a few questions:

REDRAY PROJECTOR

- does the projector really use RRP's as the lens and will one be included in the cost
- I see only 2 x HDMI inputs on the photos of the projector in the glass case at the show... will the production units have HDSDI input?
- If the projector is to be run in 2D only will you still need a 3D silver screen?
- Will the projector upres incoming 1920x1080 content?

RED WIRELESS VIDEO MODULE
- when will it be shipping and what is the price point?

SIDE HANDLE
- when will the side handle issues be address with batteries falling out?

REDCINE X PRO
- Please tell me you're working on a LINUX version with Red Rocket on Linux too
- any change of a 6k compatible thunderbolt RedRocket box

512GB SSD
- what is the price point and availability of these?

iPad EPIC CONTROL APP

Again, great work guys... what progress and amazement since I picked up #68 back in 2007.

Thank you Jarred for your time reading and answering this thread. This kind of interaction is one of the many reasons users love Red. I remember seeing "Crossing The Line" when it first hit the web, telling myself "I'll have a Red some day and become a part of the Red family." 5 years later after working very hard I was finally able to purchase my Scarlet. Not an easy investment for me, but one that I know I will never regret. You guys rock. Not just you and Jim, but everyone I've had the pleasure to interact with from Red, I can tell all your crew has a burning passion for what you guys do, and that is exciting to see as a customer. I'm now starting to save for an Epic (or whatever amazing piece of technology you will have in the next few years) I made a thousand dollars at a blackjack table while in Vegas, so that helps a little.

No questions here really. Just a note of appreciation.

no new lenses this year.

Very sad news when it comes to the RPAs... Been waiting on pins and needles for any little tidbit on these guys since the initial announcement was made... A they still in development? Or has this project been killed? If they're still on the list is there any news you can share? :-)

Enjoy the rest of your week guys! See you next year..

Rob Ruffo

yeah we suck... thats on the list.. but you guys keep asking for all the cool fun stuff first so it keeps getting pushed back. " Power Management" just isn't all that sexy.. but ironically is probably more important than anyone gives it credit for.

+1 It's like ease-of use interface features on post software. Nobody wants to say "The buttons have now been moved to more convenient locations!" on a pamphlet, but things like that probably benefit the post artist more than people realize.

But by all means you will still be able to set the camera just to take a single still when you press the record button.

Any idea when this will be enabled on the Epic?

Also, when will pre-roll be enabled on the Epic?

It would be nice if Red took a few releases now and only focused on reliability and getting the core things rock solid and super stable. So we don't get bugs like the occasional half frames on the LCD when switching from playback mode. And putting in "boring" things like power management and making the SDI-output solid with PsF support etc. Basically just making sure everything that is there now is perfect and stable. Never needing to reboot the camera due to software bugs would be great.

Thanks for the reply Jarred.

So did the magic pixies visit over night and upgrade the projector??

I want 2 separate resolutions to be selectable:

1 - Viewing resolution
2 - Recorded resolsution.

That way I can, say, frame for 4K 16:9 (PLEASE bring back 4K 16:9 in some way or other - and other 16:9 formats - it's great to say that 2:1 should be the new format, and I do agree based on aesthetics, but for the people who pay the bills here it's simply not) but record full 5K, to have great reframing abilities in post.

Crop based on what was selected in viewing would be recorded into metadata, so the post guys know exactly what was intended and don't say I was incompetent if you can see a mic or stand in the corners of the frame.

Sound good to you guys too?

The mentions of stop-motion earlier got me curious - are there plans to implement RAW streaming out through USB3/Thunderbolt/whatever in the future? Being able to have that RAW stream coming into Dragon Frame or other stop-motion software would be an animator's dream. Recording through software onto a RAID would be handy too, of course.

Also, I noticed that RCX Pro on OSX is only using 2-3 processor cores when debayering/encoding (I'm guessing 2 threads for debayering, and 1-2 for encoding). Are there plans to rewrite it to take advantage of Grand Central Dispatch in the future, or is RedRocket the only option for more speed? I'm not too optimistic on this one since the program just underwent a major rewrite, but a man can hope :)

Why not set user defined framing guides and shoot a framing chart for the 4k area and shoot 5k. I've done it before and it works well for what you are trying to accomplish.

Late to the party, but thanks for this thread and all the info.
From my perspective:

+ 1 on the power management (hoping sleep mode is on there???)
+10 on the pre-record (I can't believe how much I'm missing this feature after getting used to in on the Red One, it's indispensable with wildlife shooting)

thanks for all the hard work.

Jarred, great thread. My question: Will the 50-150 red zoom come back in a slightly new design matching the 17-50 v2?, that would be really awesome!
