Loved Loom, but I sure didn't enjoy holding those 3D glasses over my regular glasses. Wondering why you don't like 4 eyed kids?
But i will say they were the most styling 3D glasses I've ever seen.

1) Red anamorphic lenses coming?
2) Meizler module wireless receiver, will it work with iPad and regular macbooks? The wireless video, that is.
3) Redmote app for ipad/iphone coming?

There isn't an official thread for the wireless module (R90?)... Care to share any deets here?

Does it broadcast metadata too? Lens info? Start stop flags? Timecode? Clean feed only or can you select overlays?

Jarred, is Scarlet 120fps still coming at 1K on Mysterium-X or do you guys decided to make it 2K, or maybe postpone the feature all together to Dragon times?

And if Epics are first for the upgrade does that mean that all the current Epic owners will get it first and only after that the Scarlet part of the program will start?

Lastly — what do you guys think about Blackmagic's new camera, just curious?

Can we get more clarification on the red store 50k purchase collection, if you buy a collection and modify it to be over 50k meaning your single order is over 50k, you get a free dragon upgrade or does the collection price have to be over 50k unmodified? By the way thank you for taking the time out to answer every ones questions

Similar pixel size of 5 microns remember... so your 4K will be slightly smaller than MX 4K. 5K will be a but smaller than MX 5K. and 6K will be a bit bigger. Bigger.. but still be able to fit some of the S35 lenses that have a larger image circle out there.

Hey Jarred,

I meant to stop you yesterday and ask, but you guys were swamped. Will "Crossing the Line" ever make an online appearance? So few of us actually got to watch it back when it was making the rounds. Would love to see it!

Also, will the Ridley Scott interview you showed at the REDuser party be posted? Would love to pass that around to some folks. Fun piece. :)

Enjoyed the party and the booth, you guys are killing it. Thanks for all your hard work!

Jarred, can't wait for Dragon etc., but my question is lens related.

So we know from what you've said so far that dragon will need a larger image circle for 6K... Does this have anything to do with what you were teasing a few weeks ago about getting the RPPs while we could?

Feel free to answer with a heh heh heh ;)

Meizler module - How do you plan on transmitting audio and timecode wirelessly? Is this a plug-in module for existing Sound Devices mixers or will this be compatible with Nomad's Zaxnet right out of the box?

.:Edit:.

For those wondering, I read in the other thread that Nomad and Zaxnet is indeed compatible with the module and is currently being used on film sets to synch Epic and send scratch tracks.

So glad I went Zaxcom and Red right about now.

RED PRO MASTER PRIMES?

New RED PRO ZOOM 50-150mm?

Bruce Allen
04-17-2012, 12:03 PM
Oh boy. Questions!

1. How are those cool-looking FF automatic zoom lenses + RedMote Pro things going? I want them like a creature that wants things very much!

2. Have the color filters changed for the Dragon or Monstro sensors? I would love to know if the awesomeness of color rendition, especially skin, in varied lighting conditions, is going to improve with the new sensor.

3. Since you guys control both distribution (RedRay) and projection (laser awesomeness)... any chance we'll get an easy way to make a film that has metadata that says:
"HEY, THIS SHOULD BE SHOWN WITH 709 COLORS" or "HEY, SHOW THIS WITH FULL LASER COLOR PRIMARIES" and the projector will switch to the right mode?
Is there any way we can have a "backwards-compatible" LUT option so that if content is designed with full laser color primaries but the viewer only has a 709 TV, RedRay can convert?

4. Since I want to make films that use the full color gamut of the Red laser, how close are its color primaries to the Mitsubishi LaserVue projector or the very-similar NHK 8K color gamut? EG this is the NHK 8K (SHV) standard:

interesting...still i'd like to hear from them. Officially like wow good job...or its about time...not good enough..or they ponied off our users who were alienated by the price increase. They just took that market.
Observing from afar (I couldn't make it to NAB this year) I think RED has had a good show. A lot of really great announcements with estimated shipping dates on many of them. I think RED has matured in many ways, in particular with the manufacturing process. Jim and Jarred have taken this to heart. They wanted things to ship faster than any of us. Now they are getting to the point where they are hitting their marks and that is great to see.

What other camera companies do only is a factor for RED if they get complacent and sit on their hands. I don't see them doing that. Jarred and Jim will probably get out of the game before that happens. To me, they seem comfortable with their market. Indy filmmakers who get what RED is all about, and the professional market, where it's less about price and more about performance and getting the most performance for your money. If they wanted the low end market, they could have released a lower end camera by now. I personally don't think they are interested in compromising.

So, although threads have been deleted and I'm sure there may be some WTF rumblings, I'd be surprised if RED was running scared about the BM camera. Especially in wake of all the 4K discussion happening at NAB from what I can tell.

Meizler module will do this... right now it doesn't but it will by the time it ships. It uses the same protocol as the standalone wireless module so the receivers will work the same.. and you can do multiple transmitters/receivers on the same set.

Iphone and Ipad streaming is not the best yet because of the lag built into the IOS protocol.... its the problem all these great solutions like teradeck have. Hopefully someone will figure that part out.

Can you answer these questions about the Pro=IO:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?77181-PRO-IO&p=988372&viewfull=1#post988372

Its specifically about three outputs on the bottom.
1- The Time code lemo- Is this the same wiring config as Red One?
2- The 4 Pin GPI port- Is this also identical to Red One? (for example I have several preston cables that both power and trigger start/stop via this port on Red One)
3- What is the AUX port?

Assuming the answer to 1 and 2 is yes, this would be great news!!

Thanks Jarred! Much appreciated, I'm so bummed I missed this year.

What I'm really super curious about is how high the ISO of Dragon can go without objectionable grain? On EpicX, it seems ISO4000 is kinda tops, if not 3200, depending on type of light. Then you compare to the c300 (a camera I dont like, but it bears mentioning) can be pushed to ISO20,000 and it looks ok. Any chance of that type of performance from Dragon? shit, I'd love a sensor I could crank to 32,000. I'm dying to shoot a wide angle under a full moon! (call me crazy)

We are still tuning that right now... so can't give you an answer... Yet. :)

Just wondering.. What are the main differences between the aluminum and titanium Nikon mounts aside from weight?
Thanks very much in advance.
Loving the new options.

the Titnium Nikon mount is actually a bit heavier... but its 100 times stronger. you will see a difference when using heavier lenses.. less flex and distortion, and less back focus drift in extreme environments.

There are two companies I truly respect one is RED and the other Blackmagic, I have brought Decklink products
for the last twelve years, they make products which have truly contributed to our business and growth.
Reasonably priced and game-changers in workflow. The first product I bought was the original Decklink HD for US999/-
an unheard of thing in 2000-2002.

Here is an article that covers the RED ONE camera and Decklink products.

Strange the two best announcement on RAW workflow and compact cameras are from
an American company and a Australian. One was expected but where are the answers to WHY.

Jarred, the Red Projector picture shows a Ti PL mount and a 50 mm Red Lens on it. I know naught about projectors and projection, so my question is, will there be any reason to exchange lenses (for IMAX projection perhaps?) for different types of showing? And outside of just plain being classy, any reason to use the Ti mount? (aside from the fact that I think that is the only kind of PL mount Red makes.)

Dolby 3D encoded content will likely be fully compatible with the RED projector though Dolby has not clarified what Dolby 3D really is other than a vague 3D encoding process for video content that is supposed to be compatible with anything and everything as far as displays go.

I have to ask, and please no one stone me, is the FF, 645, and the mystical 617 still in the pipeline? Also, would it be possible (theoretically) to use the Epic/Scarlet Brain as a Rocket, if the Rocket is essentially (as was once described), the back half of the camera? And the last, will there be the "true stills mode" that Ted described in the 10 Questions video on RED.com?

In addition to the wireless video, have you thought of a simple monitor/EVF cable extender? An extender that allowed to take the LCD/EVF to the limits of the Redmote range would make already a big difference.

Still in the pipe.. but focused on DRAGON right now.

The Rocket is a PC card you put in your Mac or PC and it accelerates the playback and conversion of your 4k/5K RED footage.. so you can play back footage in real time and transcode in realtime.

The stills mode concept has changed. It seemed like a good idea way back when, but in practice, almost all of the still photographers just shoot motion and pull stills from the feed... it is just a way better way to do it. For sharper frames, people use HDRX in a different way, they use the HDRX track that has a narrow shutter for pulling sharp stills.. and then use the normal track for video with motion blur.

Thanks. Yes, Dolby and Texas-I are highly secretive about their technologies. I work in an independent cinema and when we went digital even the installation technicians said they weren't told everything. We currently use the Christie CP2000 projector but the RED projector looks comparitively compact and prompted me to wonder if a DOLBY filter wheel would fit inside. The cost of the glasses is also a big issue for us. Are they cheap eniough to sell to patrons? Are they equal to better than DOLBY? Will there be a royalty charge like REAL-D adds, etc

You shoot video at the highest resolution and then use individual frames as images/photos. It works perfectly for stop motion because you can just let the camera run while you fiddle with whatever it is you are shooting and then simply go back to the appropriate images.

They seriously need to rethink this decision ! Not all still shooters shoot fashion. I do shoot people but that is only a portion of the stills work I do. Still shooting was a major part of the reason I could justify purchasing this camera . I can shoot 12 gigs of stills in a day one frame at a time. In bursts that could end up as 50 or 100 gigs. This is supposed to be a DSMC. Please RED don't foprget the S part.

Jarred, that´s right, I love the ability as well to shoot 8 or 12 fps (or more) without the shutter sound of a DSLR, but it´s a pain to shoot handheld 8fps (or less like 1fps) with the same low refreshing framerate on the LCD. Makes pulling focus nearly impossible.
Do you have any solution for this in the future?
Thank you,

William Dempsey

I can't imagine shooting stop motion as a constant stream of frames. I have spent up to 18 hours with out a break shooting stop motion sequences in the past. You would spend days locating and isolating the proper frames. I shot stop motion with a Nikon back in 1999 on a job and that was a royal pain to assemble in post. I should note that the job only had about 10 extra stray frames that had to be removed due to errors. Can't even imagine thousands of extra frames.

Now on the stills side if they could program 5 or 10 frame brackets as bursts it might be a workable solution for product shooters. Then again still cameras need a single frame mode even if only a few people like my self plan to use it.

PLEASE RED! A stills camera needs to be able to shoot stills too.

Desired shutter has always been the deterring factor in my adopting of the shoot-stills-and-motion together approach. More often then not, I'd want vastly different shutter angles for stills vs motion. I always thought one would just have to be compromised. Never thought about using HDRx this way. Too cool. Thanks for sharing.

So when you say the stills mode concept has changed, do you mean you dont plan on doing much more to the stills workflow then the method people are already using now, or is there still something coming down the pipeline that is a revised stills mode concept?

*edit* as I just read the last two pages of the thread I see others haved chimed in with the request to bring a single shot mode as was planned. +1 on that front

This is me thinking out loud here...but what about claymation at 5k or 6k...they would surely benefit from having a still frame...just one of many ideas.

exactly, barry. That's what we're referring to. I think some kind of single frame mode is really essential! even if its the 1 frame per X sec/min idea or a clip which "sleeps" during recording until the next frame gets triggered. I don't need stills coming out, but controllable single shots are really essential to some.

on the Meizler Module, will it play with a variety of wireless FF motors, controllers, timecode and audio transmitters, video receivers etc? Or, is this limited to a specific brand(s) of transmitter/receiver/motors?

Will 3rd party products connecting to the MModule need to get RED-approved?

The stills mode concept has changed. It seemed like a good idea way back when, but in practice, almost all of the still photographers just shoot motion and pull stills from the feed... it is just a way better way to do it. For sharper frames, people use HDRX in a different way, they use the HDRX track that has a narrow shutter for pulling sharp stills.. and then use the normal track for video with motion blur.

that may be true for studio shooting... that's not how i shoot photography. sometimes, i seriously just need 1 frame. that's it. maybe i'm taking a texture reference... the wall isn't moving anyways. maybe i'm taking a picture of a mountain... it's not changing anytime soon. sometimes, it just comes down to the feel of carefully composing and pressing a shutter button to capture the frame, and knowing you got 'it'. it's silly to turn the record on and off as fast as you can to get something that's not going anywhere, cramps the style. there's a lot more to photography than sports, wildlife, and portraiture. really doesn't always make sense to record motion . DSMC. options... right? :)

stop motion is definitely needed!!

i agree... often this is done using external hardware... but it would be nice to have the most basic functionality for people that don't have that, or don't even know about it. simplicity = creativity.

These can't be right because these specs refer to the FF35 monstro sensor. Jim (or Jarred) mentioned that the Dragon is not one of the monstros.
This one is a S35 sensor with higher specs.

The Dragon sensor is slightly larger than the Mysterium-X sensor and the pixel size is slightly smaller. The pixel design and sensor design makes all the difference in the world.
Most all of your current lenses will work.

Jim

Sensor size is 30x15.8mm. Pixel size is 5 micron.

Still in the pipe.. but focused on DRAGON right now.

The Rocket is a PC card you put in your Mac or PC and it accelerates the playback and conversion of your 4k/5K RED footage.. so you can play back footage in real time and transcode in realtime.

Does it (Edit: the wireless transmitter) broadcast metadata too? Lens info? Start stop flags to trigger devices like the Pix recorders? With File names? Timecode? Clean feed only or can you select overlays?

Is this also to be part of the Redmote Pro?

Can transmit overlays or clean. And is one of the pieces of REDMOTE PRO... infact we even send touchscreen commands back and forth through it... i'm sure you can figure out what that means :)

It is HDMI based... so no timecode yet. yet.

the little switch on the front of the handle that goes from motion to stills. That switch will likely just be a change between two different presets.

Any possibility of the REDray Projector using spectral filters rather than polarized when it is released?

Jarred Land
04-17-2012, 02:52 PM
@L.Langer

Will there be a royalty charge like REAL-D adds, etc

normal RealD glasses will work.. you just get some ghosting that you have all seen before. The best glasses are ones that are matched to the screen and the projector, and there will be ones matched to the REDray Laser projector in disposable, cheap, and expensive version.

as in:
get the ability to set markers during shoots, favorably via redmote.
use the LCD Menu keys to directly access the functions / settings and set via scroll wheels without having to confirm twice via the enter key.

sorry this is not NAB related, but I would ask you if I were standing next to you ;)

Hey Jarred,

Sorry if this has already been answered, anyone feel free to chime in.

Sounds like the Redmote Pro requires the Meizler module or the Wireless Module, is that right?

How will Redmote Pro handle witness marks? The biggest complaint from the Birger/Impero system (once you get it working), is that you are relying entirely on your own marks, there is no way to eyeball distance at all. Will that still be the case with Redmote Pro?

Thanks!

Any plans to support time stretching in redCine-x. The redCine-x guys told me no, but it would be beneficial for guys like me shooting at a base timecode of 23.976 , but shooting 48 or 60. This requires a lot of time stretching in premiere to get some of that footage back to "normal" speed.

This is an awesome thread, Jarred. Thanks for doing it. Funny, but yesterday a group of 2 or 3 of us drilled Jarred at the booth with almost every one of these questions. He answered all of them, albeit with a few more f-bombs dropped in. Ha ha.

You guys should also know at least 3 times when questions were asked, Jarred replied with a laugh "We would never do that to you guys." Seriously, technology/video industry consumers are so incredibly cynical from their past experiences with other companies that it's hard for them to actually understand how cool RED is...and what they're trying to do. It's fun to watch.

Thanks again. Onward.

Oh, my question: Any chance RCX will get secondaries at any point? That would be HUGE!

Question / sugeston.

If no still mode. Could you not let us address the side handle red button to a "marker" it would be great even for motion. just push that button while recording and the current recorded frame gets a tag. thats' possible to jump to in red cine x pro then the still photo guys that want to snap frames can do that all they want while the camera is in record mode. For motion I would like to do the same for the good takes. Even give the director the red mote so he can trough in tag marks for good moments in the takes...
