View Full Version : Red Raw Export???

Hi There...
i am posed with a little problem here with our red footage. when exporting
16bit Tiffs out of REDCINE i noticed that i do not get the full dynamic range that i see in REDCINE. I have a shot here with a highlight on the actors forehead and in REDCINE i can ajust the exposior and correct that highlight wonderfully. but if i reset the CC in REDCINE and then export the clip to 16bit Tiffs the highlight is clipped.
this leads me to wonder: does REDCINE allways export with the settings i have set in the color tab?
is there a way to export the full raw information into a 16bit immage format?
in this case i want to correct the highlight in the actors face without loosing detail in the rather dark background.
the current info i have would mean i have to export one pass with the exposure correction for the front and one for the back and merge both together with a mask in compositing.
i would rather do it with one immage sequense and 2 color correction in compositing.
does anyone have any ideas/infos on this
Thanx
Ciao Mark

Think 16bit Tiffs are best off with linear gamma curve. In redcine you get there by selecting custom gamma and set it to 1.0. Let me know if you have any success as I am only quoting stuff I've read here...

I wonder if this issue have to do with the "headroom" graeme mentions?
Also, what's your RedCine ISO settings?
should apparently) be 320 or lower in RedCine
And the long bit-depth post discussion...

well i tried the gamma 1.0 "trick"...
and i also tried to export with a 320 ASA...
both mays did not give me the desired results...
what i actually want is to get full dynamik range that i see in REDCINE out of REDCINE into my compositing software to do my comps in full 16bit an then allow for full flexibility in grading (speedgrade DI)...
at the moment i do not see a way to do this :-(
there are a few buttons in REDCINE that i am not quite sure what they actually do...for example the "Color" button on the far left of the menue that appears when i move my mouse to the top portion of my monitor. what does that do??? and what is the RGB button for in the project tab???
can anyone help me there...

The color button toggles off and on what the sensor recorded and what redcine is doing to the footage (I think). The RGB button is just used for dragging the mouse over the image reading the values.
Try this: Reset everything in the color tab holding down the cmd-key. Set the gamma to custom 1.0. The asa to 320. Kelvin to 5000. Exposure to -0.4. And turn of the shapening stuff...
That should look close to what you got with the color button turned off... At least that's what I get. Maybe Graeme can explain more. I'm alittle confused myself..
Also, are you sure that your speedgrade settings are correctly set to view the footage?

You need to reduce the exposure setting to at least -0.4, and leave the ASA at 320. However you may still get clipping in individual channels if your lighting was anything other than daylight (sensor native) as the white balance correction may push channels to clipping. If this is happening, you could try setting the white balance to 5600 in Redcine, and correcting it in Speedgrade. This would not be ideal, as I believe there is a benefit to be had from doing the white balance adjustment during the RAW conversion, but you could see how it works for you.

Hey Mark...
One thing that I want to make sure of... it sounds like you are saying that what you see on screen is not what is being rendered. Is that what you are experiencing?!

Lucas,
can you explain the exact settings that render out the pure RAW file completely unchanged in terms of gamma or gradation.
What we want out of the app is the pure deBayered image at none-at-all color/dynamic change (so no LUT or the like applied).
Would be helpful to understand what your app is doing here as we had some hard times to get it to export in a way that it looks the same when opened in another app as it did look when opened in camera playback or RED CINE.
We found that CTRL+Reset helped, plus Gamma 1.0, but there is still some shift, so Mark put in some -0,40 value somewhere. I guess there is something not really clear now to us :(
Cheers & have fun on your RED event,
Axel

I'd advise that wanting a totally untouched image is unwise as RedAlert / Redcine do do the white balance most correctly whereas other apps may not. At the very least set a good white balance.
Set ISO to base, ie 320, and exposure to -0.4 (might need more on a strong white balance correction), gamma to linear light in RedAlert or custom gamma to 1.0 in RedCine, will then give a very neutral export.

Hi Graeme,
thanks for verifying our values. So it appears we are on track with these, thanks again!
One more question:
Is there a description of the XML format for EDL that RED CINE is supporting for doing bulk processing?
The problem is that we shot 4K and not 4K 2:1, ie. we do not currently edit in FCP anymore (we did on Harris VelocityHD system, to be clear). So the question is if there is a simple description or sample XML file, so I can create the appropriate "EDL" or how you name it for letting the selected takes being processed by RED CINE.
Any help highly appreciated.
Cheers,
Axel
