why we need that Flare Guard?
how do we pix this issue?

You do need it. If you don't get it you will notice a strange flare pattern with strong light sources. Hey, I love lens flare but not that kind! The new flare guard, as I discovered when I put it in, is almost complete fix for the problem. It is very easy to get it sent to you by Red. Don't hesitate to do it.

sent to you by Red ?

Yes. You have to send an email to a special secretive division of Red Digital called the OLPF port bushing or something like that. Sorry I cannot find their email address. You should ask your sales rep. It is completely free including shipping to you. Installation is trivial even for the more artistic amongst us.

OLPF@RED.COM

it's pretty simple. Give them your name and camera number, preferably email them from the address associated with your RED account. Or talk to your bomb squad rep, they can probably hook you up too.

And there is a free (thanks Jay!) how-to-install video here:

Anyone know if these have been sent out in high numbers? I requested two about six weeks ago for Epic-X 634 and my early Scarlet. Not in a hurry, just wondering if I should follow up at some point.

you should definitely follow up and see what's going on... they sent mine almost immediately - though that was awhile ago.

Does anyone have a link or footage of the before and after image "problems?"

I ordered mine today, not sure exactly what I am looking to fix yet. Seeing doubles from light sources?

Hi Jim, I see your order for 2x OLPF Port Bushings was processed a few days after we received your initial email request. I have our logistics team working on confirming the outbound tracking number now.

looks kinda like this:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=16212&d=1314572588

this is actually from 2001, so the gate flare/streak is not new to red cameras - in any case, it's been compensated for.

it mainly is only noticeable when you have a light source right off the edge of the frame...

here's one of the main surviving threads: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?62555-Epic-STREAK-FLARING

just install the thing and don't worry about it...

It's basically off camera lights that cause an old style 'gate flare' (like film cameras). You can flag the lights easily - but sometimes (long steadicam takes etc), the original reflective coating around the OLPF caused a flare effect that could fill large areas of the image (top/bottom/side etc).

There was much discussion about it - I remember Adam Eden was one of the first to point it out (doing long lens and steadicam work). Toia quite liked it and only changed the bushing recently (if memory serves, he had a nasty flare on a big car gig).

Basically, it's a matt black frame that drops in and stops unwanted light bounce on your sensor.

Seach for gate flare and you'll see the threads :)

Wasn't RED planning on doing a factory install at some time during the manufacturing process? Some people with later cameras shouldn't need to do the retrofit. RED should publish the camera numbers that were fixed before shipping. Unless shipping and manufacturing wasn't linear in re: camera numbers.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?62555-Epic-STREAK-FLARING/page4&highlight=gate+flare - this was one of the first threads - if not the first... (I think!).

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?63948-Epic-flare-issue-solution&highlight=gate+flare - has an excellent demo - this was Doug's solution before the official RED one came out.

Other later ones had a lot more Epic footage with the flares.

I quite like them - more organic and film like... but they can be a PITA if you don't want them in shot and have to keep re-setting lights or flagging to avoid/fix the unwanted flare.

Wow, talk about service! Thanks Nick, have my Fex Ex notification now! My rep Dan also PMed me to make sure everything was on track.

Seriously, I could not ask for better service than Red provides.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it!

Here's a video with a thousand examples of the flares....we loved them when we shot this video, but those flares are certainly not right for most gigs

https://vimeo.com/33429233

That being said, I need to get myself a bushing. Are they easy to uninstall...if I want flares again for my next music video?

Uli Plank

Yes, you can get them out as easily as in, only screws involved, no glue. But be careful, the screws are tiny.

I was under the impression that they fixed the issue with recent camera's. Anyone know how to tell if our Epics have it already installed at the factory?

Take the lens off and shine a light into the port. If the sides are matte black, it's in.
