Amazingly, none of these were shot with a Red Camera.

"The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,"
"Atonement,"
"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,"
"No Country for Old Men,"
"There Will Be Blood."

Pretty solid list here. Anyone care to add honorable mentions?

lol.. maybe next year huh!

Atonement is a dreadful movie IMO..
Mostly because it is a boring, stupid story. But the heavily diffused camerawork didn't help huh:)

Into the Wild

I got my Hal Holbrook call right but missed on Penn's direction. I guess the editor got the credit this time.

great movie but primarily natty light. Not that that means it shouldn't of been nominated. But it was robbed in best pic and director! Michael Clayton! give me a break.

Diving Bell and the Butterfly. If you haven't seen it go. Hardest one to find. Janusz best work in my opinion. The first movie where he didn't have at least one or two shots that were too much.

Although the Deaks is good. Oh and Children of Men should have won last year.

Can anyone give me a link or explain in short what is the voting mechanism for the Oscars?

Does everybody vote for everything or - DPs for DP, Directors for Directing, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Atonement is the movie of the year for me.

Just saw over on the other 'user that DVXuser member James Longley has been nominated for Best Documentary for the 2nd time in as many years.

Last year he was nominated for Iraq in Fragments shot on DVX100. This year for "Sari's Mother" (Best Documentary Short), also apparently shot on the DVX100. Pretty wild. Not RED, but cool nonetheless.

Later,
Jason

absolutelly! this is kind of nightmare for nominated people! this kind of voting must be changed - i.e. if ONE person receives more votes then others - that very person should win. despite two films nominated.

or

every nominated person/team is represented with just one film in certain category.

just my 2 cents.

Win or lose, I'm sure Deakins will be as proud as punch to have 2 films nominated. Quite an achievement in itself.

I really enjoyed Catherine Keener's role in the movie. Decent movie overall.

Bart the bear nailed his part too. :sarcasm:

The wolf scene looked faked and or 'overprocessed'. Odd SPR type video effect.

To amend the technical specs on a prior post:

According to American Cinematographer, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" was shot on a variety of lenses, much of it on SuperSpeeds and Arri Shift and Tilts, in addition to the Lens Baby. Also, for some of the shots, a modified Arri435 with handcrank was used, that could go backwards and forwards as well.

Interiors were shot on Kodak Vision 5279 and exteriors on Fuji Eterna 250D 8563. The lab, Eclair, did a light silver retention of about 30%.

But here's my question: Does anyone have info on the car rigging systems used, particularly the shots of him driving in the convertible with his son? I really dig it - it had a certain mix of or tension between the mechanical behaviour with human fluidity.

Of the pictures I've seen so far that have been nominated, No Country is my favorite, followed by Jesse James.

Personally, I would have chosen Lust, Caution over There Will Be Blood.

Still quite a few of these I haven't seen yet! I just got Elizabeth II in 720p, which I'm looking forward to. Also looking forward to Into the Wild (HD release in March), Diving Bell and Atonement.

I second that! Best film of the year - thoroughly engaging.
