Anyone using the 24-105 on the scarlet? Any thoughts to share about this lens?
Are you finding it fast enough most of the time?

I've used it on my Epic and C300, mainly when I need to roll light and handheld outdoors. I love it for that kind of shooting. Indoors, it's not my first choice on the Epic.

It is one of Canon's best mid-range zooms (beats the 24-70 2.8) and one of their best kept secrets. It isn't a constant F4 though, it will drop down a bit at the long end.

Another lens to consider...if you want great manual focus and Zeiss look...is the Contax 28-85 3.3-F4.
One of the sharpest still zooms ever made, and incredibly smooth and buttery feel to it.
Ryan De Franco shot most of this music video on it:

Use it all the time. Every now and again I wish for a little more light indoors when I'm on the long end of the lens. I like it so much more then the 24-70 f/2.8. The IS is really good and useful to have as well.

Which is better to pair with canon 70-200 2.8
the 24-105L
Or zeiss 35 f2

I mean presumably the Canon 24-105 will "pair" better with the 70-200 than a Zeiss will. Canon and Zeiss glass have different "feels". IMHO.

True, they do have different feels to them.
Give a little take little.....

Whats the consensus on the 16-35 2.8 version one?
I can't seem to keep a steady relationship with my lens choices

You should think about what you're going to do. ;) The 16-35 and the 24-105 are very different lenses, both are good for what they are. With the 24-105L you'll get a lot more zoom-range and IS, which is a big plus for handheld shooting. I've bought this as my first lens, i was surprised by its performance, i didn't expected it to be that good. It's a great start, you'll have a good all-around lens, and it will be good enough for lots of situations, especially if you want to carry around only one lens.
Of course, its not made for everything, i sometimes miss more wide-angle and for indoor/lowlight it could be a bit faster. But you can't have everything, the 24-105 offers a lot for its low price-tag and if IS is usefull for you, there aren't many other options. I've chosen this lens over the 24-70 2.8 and i think it was a good choice.
My next lenses will be primes and maybe i'll add the 16-35 to my kit too.

i found the 16-35 to be very soft, 24-105 is a great all purpose lens for the daylight. waiting for tokina to update their 11-16 for a wide lens this summer

So I've herd 16-35 is soft at the wide end...

It's a good all round zoom, but in terms of sharpness , bokeh and even color rendition is the worst of the zoom lens I have- I have the tokina 11-16, the canon 16-35 and the 70-200 is 2.8 II. the IS was what sealed the deal for me.

Thanks Nick,
That's a great video and the Contax look fab! But, only the forest scene was shot on the 28-85 zoom. The rest was with 35 1.4 and 85 Contax.
Looks really nice though. Thanks for posting it.
Here is a clip i shot with the canon 24-105 from moving car using IS : https://vimeo.com/42795360
