A little planning exercise re how I'd like to configure my red for ENG/Documentary 2K or HD shooting with my 20X HD Lens set in windowed mode. Also in the picture, installed my 4/5.6 matte box rods and focus pull. The RED configured this way looks like it would look and feel surprisingly like other HD cameras.

Why would you not use the focus grip on the ENG lens?

This has got me thinking:innocent:
For those intending to use the red by using a deeper DOF most of the time with shallower DOF on occassions. How many would set the red up with a focus wheel and how many would set it up without one and just use your fingers. I am talking about using red with a red zoom for example or a super 16mm zoom.
Still learning all of this at the thoery stage but i am heading back to start again going through all the theory learning once more prior to the big event (practical usage:ohmy: ). Any advice would be appreciated.

Zoom grip with right hand secondary grip with left for added stability and to rest when in a long take.
Mike Some prefer wheel and some turn lens eng. style. My idea in posting this was to show the RED set up in a conventional eng/doc. camera configuration, similiar to many HD cameras, without
cages rails etc. hanging all over it.

Very cool TJ -- thanks for posting that. I principally plan to use the REd for doc work, as well. Is everything (especially the lens) in your rendering to scale? I had planned on purchasing a S16mm lens -- probably a Zeiss zoom -- to use with the Red. Any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of this approach in documentary work? Obviously I will not be getting the long telephoto that an ENG lens could offer, that is one big minus I can see, and the lack of a servo zoom. Other than that?

I always have my wheel attached to my supped up dvx.. This might sound wierd but its better for the slow focuses i need to achieve.. when i have to whip focus i just use my thumb.. ill always have a wheel attached.. whether it be eng, doc, or feature..

Peter, I'm sure Evin's post of the Cine style red in the other thread is much closer to scale. I tried to make them pretty close. It seems clear to me that a heavy eng lens like our HD Canon will tend to make the RED a little front heavy and require moving the mag/batt more to the rear or use a larger battery..
get out the old Nicad 14/4s and shoot all day?
