Anyone else in the SF / Bay Area - getting a RED?
I plan on shooting a lot with my new RED camera - 3 months in 2007 to produce several HD nature DVDs.
However, if there are some talented DPs, producers that are doing commercial work or extra-ordinary documentaries or Indi-features that have large commercial potential - feel free to contact me.
In general, it would be great to network and help each other out with tech issues - so at least let's get e-mail list together and maybe meet once a month for networking.

Hey Greg,
I'm just 3 hours south of the Bay Area, near San Luis Obispo. I used to live/work up there, and I still work there regularly. Donatello and a few others are also in the Bay Area.
Among other things, I shoot a lot of nature, adventure travel, alternative sports, and documentaries.
I'm all about networking...

Hey Gibby,
Sounds great! I've seen some of your work over on Mammoth HD, and plan to be joining you there soon in HD. I have a few DVcam stock footage DVDs over at Artbeats myself and plan to expand into HD.
Also, you invited me awhile back when you get you RED to come visit, I hope to take you up on that. I plan on moving back to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo in the next year or two - I miss the beach, what can I say - watching my own DVDs only make me want to move back.
Well, lets get Donatello to say hello, and we'll start our e-mail list for north of LA CAL... with our first meeting to be in San Luis and first shoot of RED shortly after... I volunteer to be first AC. What do you say?
Oh and I can bring my 2 Nikon lenses that a few have recommended if you don't have them already, Gibby - my Nikon 17-35 F2.8 and Nikon 80-200 f2.8 - but you'll have to bring the RED adapter.

Yeah Greg...the Central Coast is an easy place to live and a hard place to leave. Nice pace...and lots of options!
I have a bunch of SD and HD collections on Mammoth HD. Yesterday Mammoth HD distributed a press release on the new RED Footage Collections that me and some other RED shooters will be offering through them. The release was picked up widely today by scores of motion media trade web sites. There are 3 new pages up on the MHD web site for RED stock footage. Almost all the photos on those pages are my DSLR stills as spaceholders until I get the first RED frames/footage up there. Here's link to the main MHD RED footage page. The other two pages are on the link buttons. Link: http://www.mammothhd.com/MHD_RED1.html
Cool, bring those Nikon lenses. I don't have them, but I will have the Nikon adapter. I have a few Nikon primes we can shoot with.
I'll also have the RED 300mm and a few cine primes we can slap on it. Donatello, if you have some glass you'd like to test out, bring 'em. Gonna be fun!!!

Hey Gibby,
That sounds great! I'll bring the lenses, and Donatello can bring the clam chowder! I'm also very happy to see Mammoth HD, taking the lead in offering RED footage at a premium. The RED part of the website looks great.

Your press release is getting noticed, a producer in Newport Beach forwarded it to me because he knew of my involvement in the Red project. It looked very nice. Looks like a worthwhile stock footage project, best of luck in your project!

Sorry...it took me awhile to notice this post of yours Brian! Thanks...
I think stock footage from RED One should be a serious consideration for the business plan of every independent RED One owner or renter. Quality 4k and 2k footage in various desirable frame rates should have a solid demand for licensing - and a long shelf life in the case of 4k. Obviously 24fps will always be in demand, but for certain fast-moving subjects (sports, nature, etc.) 4k/60fps (via RAW/raid), 2k/60fps onboard and 720p/120fps onboard should license real well. Time lapse and POV also have good market potential. Almost any subject matter imaginable has the ability to license out, but some obviously license better than others. I love shooting stock footage in my free time. Its the resource that just keeps on giving. I call it "mailbox money" because once you've shot it, you keep getting surprised at your mailbox by unexpected checks. Very few guys will have their business just be stock footage, but it is a great addition to a good shooter's business portfolio.

Count me in on this. I look forward to getting to know all of you and sharing knowlege/info about RED ONE.

Hey guys-
I'm in Oakland. They didn't give me a specific number when I reserved at the NAB booth, but it's probably around 1600! Wish I had reserved last year!
I have a variety of primes that are Standard Arri-mount that I'm using with a PL adapter, ranging from 16mm to 500mm, mostly Zeiss and Schneider. I also have some Nikons (primes and an 80-200mm), but probably won't order a Nikon mount immediately. I'm currently remodeling my stage which will be geared for green/blue screen work when it's back up and running. Can't wait to pull some 4k keys! www.artichokepro.com

I'll have a full kit - camera, viewfinder, lenses, etc. - in San Francisco that will be for rent as well. #625 so sometime in November, but I'm planning our first production with it in December. I'm likely to get the Nikon mount as well to go with the prime kit I've amassed ... depending upon demand.

Sounds like there will be no shortage of Reds in the Bay Area. I know John Chater and Lee Utterbach both have reservations in the lowish #s (I think John has two). #1353 will be shacking up with me in Oakland (which is an early enough # for me--I want to test someone else's camera to be sure they fixed the clipping highlight problems I saw at NAB with the Peter Jackson footage).
Donatello, I'd love to check yours out when it's delivered! How's life, btw? Last I saw you was a year ago January before leaving to shoot in Hawaii with Stephanie.

as soon as i get the "call" from RED with pick up date ... i'll post here ...
i'm going to leave open approx 9-10 days after i pick it up for testing -that will include week days ... depending on how many want to test and what they want to test i may arrange small groups ( 2-4 persons that want same kinds of test ) ? all depends on request ...
also Lee Utterbach has a email sign up for a possible RED thing in future ( pops up when you go to his site- but doesn't pop up every time ) ... i believe he has RED 192 ... if Lee does have a meet RED day - i'll try to have RED 103 there too ....

Good Morning,
I can't believe I didn't see this thread before! I'm a resident in San Francisco, and have been following RED ever since Jim Jannard announced it publically in 2006.
I work for the Bay Area Video Coalition in San Francisco. We've hosted Siggraph planning meetings, 3D user group meetings, and HVX/DVX meetings as well. We've just created a new "innovation lab" inside the facilities, which allows users to test their outputs on HD as well as handheld devices (cell phones, ipods). The room is equipped with 2 octocore 3Ghz Macs w/ 2 30 inch screens (and a 52" HDTV set as well).
Would there be any interest in folks coming to San Francisco, Bay Area Video Coalition to host a red gathering? I believe I can offer up the space to host.
All the best,

I do not want to disappoint anyone, but I would rather delay shipping than to push cameras out the door when we can improve them. We need the time." - Jim

Great to meet Dillon, Alex, and Owen last night at FCP meeting. The highlight was seeing the camera. Help me out on this one, guys, but there are a lot of non-functioning features at this time. Variable frame rate not ready yet, EVF not available yet, Red Drive, other features still baking. Apparently, updates seem to be released regularly.
Torrey showed some footage he'd shot but it was difficult to see and evaluate due to a large light shining on the screen.
Silverado is renting the Red Camera package for $2000/day. Package includes camera, Red 300mm lens, Red 18-50mm Zoom lens, Red LCD screen, 2) 8GB Red Compact Flash cards (each holds about 5 minutes), Red Drive/Battery Harness, rods and mounting brackets, focus hook kit (?), Sachtler Cinema 30 tripod, Red Tools, case, and matte box. The flyer doesn't mention how many batteries it comes with and I'm sure it must have a charger as well.
Rental requirements include photo ID, $40,000 insurance, signed contract, $1,000,000 general liability certificate of insurance naming Silverado with $1,000,0000 Auto, full rental payment, driver's license number, social security number, and three industry references. Rental contract is very detailed 3-page contract.
I imagine that any of us who plan to rent our cameras should consult a lawyer as well and draw up a similar rental agreement.

Hi, Folks--
I know this is REALLY last minute info, but I thought I should nonethless post the following information here.
Tonight, Wed. 9/26, at Apple's HQ in Cupertino, Torrey Loomis of Silverado Systems will again be showing off the RED ONE system--so if you missed it last night in San Francisco, here's your second chance to see it in action in the South Bay. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm in Apple's Town Hall and is open to the public. The meeting is free and parking is plentiful and free. There's even free pizza and soft drinks. Full details are at this blog:

Hi people,
Well I just couldn't hold out any longer, after seeing an actual shipping RED at the FCPcutters meeting last week I caved, went home and ordered mine. Only wish I'd done it when Graeme Natress urged me to at NAB two years ago, then I wouldn't have to wait till next year.
It was very nice to meet several of you at the meeting, this camera is certainly the most amazing development. I've got to hand it to Jim Jannard for pulling it off, quite an incredible act of altruism towards independent film makers if you ask me. I'm sure the people at Sony and Panasonic etc. just love him for it!
All the best,

Hello NorCal Red owners,
I have a Red on order that should come between April and June. With only one Red camera, I know that from time to time I may have shoots requiring two or more cameras. I just want to know if any of you are up to working jobs with me, or if I can help you, when multiple cameras are needed. I'm located on the Monterey Peninsula.
Thanks,
Bob
I (and gear) will be available for multicam shoots. I should be getting my RED in Febuary. I also have extensive support gear: Steadicam, jib, dolly & track, lighting & grip, audio, etc. Cheers!

Hey guys, I just placed an order for a camera a few months ago. I am a student cinematographer based in San Francisco. My experience, if any, are shooting film 16mm/super 8mm and mini DV. This is new to me and would like to learn and gain experience. So, if anyone out there is shooting and in need of some extra hand, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone I'm Nathan Garofalos and live in South Lake Tahoe. I am a student filmmaker, and I do not have a RED, but have been on two commercial shoots with one. What productions is everyone working on?

I am interested in meeting other members and having the chance of seeing and testing the Red camera. I am available 24/7.
