I cannot run it yet due to no lens or EVF or LCD.. So I can only speak to certain things:

Very solid construction. Put everything together and it all fit tight and snug. I love the "thumscrews" that you turn and then can pull out to leave in any position. Very useful and I find myself useing the ones at the rear of the camera as cable holders to keep them out of my line of sight for the rear display.

RED Drive.. Wow! What a solid, well built little box. Fits snuggly into it's holder.. I like it.

The handles are a log of fun, there's so many things you can do with them. One again, very solid!

Tomorrow afternoon I will begin shooting, then I will know more, but so far I
could not be happier.

I'm excited to get started.

Unless you are single, take as many pictures of your significant other smiling at you now. Just so you remember that look ...

Welcome to the Red Ride!

I'm married so I don't remember any smiling. :)

Seriously I have the perfect solution: I have been asked to shoot lifestyle footage of people, so I am going to shoot her and my baby first!!

Got lots of brownie points for that one.

I just unpacked our first Red camera and it is sitting on my dining room table. I can't believe the day has finally come. My children only took 9 months each once we knew we were expecting. This feeling is much like having a new child. I am so excited I can hardly stand the fact I have to put the accesories on the camera before I can start shooting.

It could not have come at a better time. I have decided that my first shoot with this camera will be tomorrow at my seven year old sons play. He has a part in a school version of Snow White. So I will be there along with all the other parents using there mini DV and VHS cameras. I will be shooting in 4k Red. How cool is that? Maybe I should bring a dolly and a grip package as well...JK....:)

I really have to hand it to the Red team. They were always very helpful answering all my questions, and trust me I had a bunch.. So thanks to everyone at Red and espicially to: Jim, Ted, Brent, Sean, and Brian..

I look forward to a long relationship with Red and will be looking forward to all the future products that Red will be developing.

See you at the MOVIES.....

Congrats Shane, we´re in the same club by the way....
I also have my new RED in front of me on my dining room table... (got it today)

The feeling when I took the RED body out of it´s box, was almost as I was lifting up some extra terrestrial object... weird.

I ordered back in September 2006, after I had followed the project since December 2005. (I first attempted to order during NAB 06 - but didn´t try hard enough.)

It´s been a long journey, and it is now that it all really starts!

Enjoy!

Shot a little today. Not for effect, just for confirmation that the system works as I had hoped.

It does. Showed it to some friends.. All went well. Plan to shoot "for real' tomorrow and later tonight.

Just getting the hang of this thing.

By the way, showed to some friends who really cracked up when they saw the chip chart in the video menu. At that point everyone started looking for a kitchen sink!

Thanks for all of your nice comments. I do feel truly blessed to be one of the few that own this wonderful piece of equipment at this time. I really hope that we will all be able to start a friendly community of owner operators that can bounce work off of one another.

I live in LA and can tell you that out of all the places in the world LA will have the most Red cameras. So doing business in a non cut throat manner will be crucial in keeping the Red at the acceptance level it deserves.

I know that there was some guys trying to start a LA Red user group, but I never herd what happened. Anyone know?

Thanks again,

Shane

P.s. If there is anyone out there that needs to sub-rent a brand new Red, let me know.

OK, back from dinner with a few preliminary observations (not that I thought of the camera once while gazing into my wife's eyes!)
I'm very impressed with its construction. The machining and ID of the body and all the accessories are (at first blush) as good as anything I've seen with Arri and Panavision. Very sturdy and well thought out. I am having trouble making the cradle stay put. It's very "floppy" with a Dionic 160 on it. Are we supposed to tighten the hex bolts that appear on one side or the articulating joint?
The rear panel is very easy to understand and navigate, and there is a definite logic to the arrangement of the buttons and how you interact with them.
The monitor is very impressive. Shocking how lightweight and thin. Nice picture; although I will put it up side by side with my Panasonic LH-900 to really evaluate. But then again, the Panasonic weighs as much as the Red camera body! ;)
No EVF. But I know it's coming. I can't really use it until I get my ET EVF bracket (next week or two?)
Very thoughtful of Red to include some adapters; Mini XLR to XLR, Din to BNC.
My accessories are a little screwy, due to my own small goofs...
I realized that I should have ordered two top mounts. I only got one, which I put up front to mount the LCD. If I'd wanted to mount the cradle on the rear top, I'm stuck for the moment. I also goofed and did not realize that the production pack includes a cradle (I knew that it had a cradle-like part for the battery and the drive, but did not realize it was the EXACT same part) so I ordered a cradle in addition to the production pack. Oops...
I also got a 15mm adapter, thinking that I could use it as the start of a lighter hand held setup with one of my Aaton handgrips and rods, but it's more erector-set than that... I'll have to work on that and see what other parts I need.
BTW, I picked up an A/B QR-DSR battery adapter to carry me until the QR-RED is available. VERY loosey-goosey. Not sure how to make it better. It comes with a set screw and spacer that helps to fit it to a Sony camera, but it's of no use here. Not Red's fault, and I'll muddle through...
I slapped on a battery and fired it up. IT LIVES!!! The whoosh of the fans, the panel lights up, this thing is ON!!! Not too bad on boot up. I put on my 18mm Superspeed and turned on the LCD (after a few tries, not sure what I was doing wrong) I stuck in a CF card, formatted, and pressed the red button while my kids goofed around in the frame. MAGIC!!!! MAGIC!!! RECORDING AT 4K!!!
Did a quick playback. It WORKED!!!
Have not gone any further, but I'll try the post workflow tomorrow.
Bottom line, my first impression is that this camera is just about everything we could have hoped for.
Thank you Jim.
Tests...
Of course I just went through a couple of slow weeks which would have been perfect to shoot test and get the whole system up and running. Next week I'm booked Tuesday through Thursday, so Monday's my only chance (I doubt I'll get anything much done over the weekend) But I'll post some stuff soon. I'll get a chance to do a test with the Cookes vs. the speeds vs. the zooms (yeah I know Evin beat me to this but I still want to do it for my own lens inventory) plus I want to try my old Cooke 9-50 in 2K. I may even have a chance to shoot a test for an IMAX film-out!
Lots more to come...
Cheers,
Harry

If you ordered the production pack it should come with one top mount. And if you ordered a separate top mount that would make two that you should have.

fightordie, you are correct. I ordered an extra universal mount. I also need to try my Arri BP-9 bridgeplate to confirm that the optical axis height is wrong with Red. If it is I need to order the ET 19mm bridgeplate.
And I think what I was trying to accomplish by ordering the cradle was to get a lightweight battery solution for handheld without the drive. So I guess what I really needed to order was the Quickplate.
Monday I'll build and evaluate all accessories and order whatever extras I need...
Cheers,
Harry

Harry,

I think I'm missing something here. You're saying that you received Mini-XLR to regular female XLR cables from Red? If that's true, I'm really happy. From what I know, lots of people are having these cables made. Can you tell us again what cables you received from Red and how many of them?

Thanks,

From the ops guide (freely available at red.com), page 7:

A 6-inch length DIN 1.0 / 2.3 to BNC video adaptor cable and an 9 inch length mini-XLR to mini-XLR cable and XLR to mini-XLR adaptor are provided with the camera.

This corresponds to what my sales rep told me.

I cannot say what this is for, cause I don't want to jinx it.. But here's two shots from today...

They are cute

Fair warning, I am experimenting with color temp.. So they will look different..

One thing I can say for sure, like my SDX900, the RED likes blue. Keep using Kino's at 5600 or HMIs then warm in post. The one of on the right is kind of what it looked like when shot, the one on left is warmed a little in post.
