What do you guys think of this for a telephoto zoom:

and this for a wide angle zoom:

To me the Cooke is perfect for steadicam use. It seems to be smaller and compact and pretty fast for a zoom. Thoughts, suggestions, criticisms......

Can't wait to rent a RED and do some hardcore field testing!

the cooke would be pretty big for a steady cam to be able to balance well. The red zoom looks like it may be a better fit but zooms are not real great for any steady cams. A lot of steady cam guys try to only run with primes when on their sled.

Hi,

The close focus or the Arg is 4'4'' so I don't think it would be much use. I also think the Cooke is a monster, but optically sweet.

If you must fly a zoom, find a small one like the Cooke 20-60, if you are rich then any one of the 3 new 15-45's being made.

Hey Joe,

I was wondering when some one was going to bring up the Cooke 5x14.
With it's wide angle of 14mm it would seem to cover just about everything you would need for everyday shooting. The 3x20 Stephen mentioned is a very good lens. I had six brand new ones on my bench at one point to pick out a pair for a camera project. They were all so close to each other in terms of performance that it was a crap shoot. But this was to be expected.

Yeah I really like the 14-70. I'm not rich per se, but right now my general consensus is to start out with a decent set of Elite Opticas and add the cooke 14-70 as well. I didn't realize it was that big, I guess from the picture I was thinking it was a bit smaller for some reason. Guess I could always just rent a compact zoom for steadicam. The only thing that really hooked me on that monster Ang was the range.

Check out the Cooke 15- 40 mm zoom. Around 3.5 kgs and good close focus. If you have to run a zoom on the rig.

Finner...... Hey waita minute I worked for this guy... loaded the sled with a huge zoom and even wanted to put up the 100mm matte box. then wanted to zoom in the shot and hold lock offs at the tele. end. Of course the assistant couldn't do it either.....as we were wide open. This ended up as a head and shoulders of a guy moving alongside the bar and setting down shot.. end of the 5to1, from against the back wall. You really couldn't see enough foreground to know I was moving so I mostly panned. just took a few steps... It looked pretty good except the hold over the shoulder to the bartender which the asst missed pretty bad anyway. They ended up cutting to frontal close up as he sat?? oh well.....

I didn't say it was impossible to do. From what you say ended up making the cut it does not suprise me with what the outcome was. It's more of a right tool for the job kind of thing.
