View Full Version : Build 14... ready?
Jannard

Build 14 is almost ready for you. We are anxious to deliver a 2nd Christmas to our customers.
What is NOT in Build 14. The "magic" image. That is Build 15. So is multiple simultaneous outputs.
But don't discount Build 14 as anything but "Landmark". I won't sleep the night we put it out waiting for the responses...
Just so you know... on a one to ten, Build 14 is a 14... and Build 15 is a 15.

or
"Hold on, let me get that for you in a couple days"
Cause seriously...you're killing me here.

Assuming its possible to go back to #13, why not put #14 out there as a beta build? If we can't break it then you can certify it as a release build in a week or two. Just sayin'

The improvements to Red are coming so quickly and in significant bounds, I stopped reading Red "test" and "technical" threads. I love learning... but not if it's out-of-date and no longer applicable. I'll browse until April when I finally get my camera... and Red is at NAB.

Jim
Before everyone gets to excited take a good look at Jims signature line below.
"Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..."
From what I have seen red consistantly delivers with they say they will it's just the dates that are not quite right. Thats okay though I'm excited because RED #993 should be in my hands sometime in September 2007, by the way whats the date today?
Wolf has been called a few too many times for me. I am very excited to see and hear about all build 14 and 15 have to offer when they do indeed come out.
Please don't take this as a big Jab red team. Heck I am just finishing up post production for a corporate training video I produced/directed that I told the client would be finished before Christmas (ha). Just the nature of it all.

Finner,
To be fair, Red had already said a couple weeks ago that Build 14 would come on February 1st, so having it come on February 6th is pretty much an accurate delay. The delivery date has ALREADY changed, no need to put that out there.
Jannard
02-05-2008, 10:58 PM
Our customers have the right to point out (correctly) that we have missed target dates. And we have the right to point out that they have always been "target" dates because we are new at this. My signature clearly points out that dates are somewhat uncertain. We are trying to do better at making our targets and deliver the capabilities we promised. But we are still rookies...

I would far more have a camera and system that is "right" then just "right now". I totally understand things being late and it really does not bother me one little bit. I just no longer get excited when I hear any dates for anything red and instead look at it as that will be great when it happens sometime around that date.
I respect that doing it well comes way before doing it fast. Heck I bet you would very much like to have 4,000 cameras shipped by now as the red bank account would be looking a lot different then it currently does. It's nice to see you are putting quality and the future of red owners ahead of personal $ gains.

Something tells me though that if you set a deliverable 24 hours in the future, you're already done and just need to make a nicely named zip file.
It takes a pretty large unforeseen bug to delay a release less than 24 hours from delivery.

Build 14 has been tested quite a bit. It is in the hands of a few beta testers and we have worked it out pretty well. As usual, we will post it in Beta-build form. But it is solid. When we got the Build 14 alpha we didn't know what was in there, as it came before the list of features or a revised manual.
As soon as I got into the menu ... I said (out loud) "WTF!!"
Then I thought about out the implications, and I got really excited, really fast.
I can't "spill the beans", but what I can tell you is ... wait to you shoot a scene with "extreme detail" with this build !!
Jim talks about 14 and 15 as "landmark" builds - and what I can sincerely say to that, having tested MANY, MANY builds ... is that 14 really hits home how this camera will never be done. It really can just keep getting better.
And ... (I might get my legs broken for this) .... if you think Build 14 is a Christmas present ... wait till they release RedAert & RedCine with Graeme's a new demosiac ... that is like a glass of fine champagne on New Years Eve ...

Extreme detail has to with higher bit rates I am s'spoussin, as an option you can capture more bits more detail, less filmy would be a guess.

We are scheduled to shoot the shuttle launch tomorrow. Liftoff is scheduled for 2:45 p.m..
Since the release is scheduled to be posted at midnight is there any chance you could reveal the details. This will be our first shoot with RED #206 so using 12, 13, or 14 doesn't matter in terms of older footage or whatever. But if there are quality or feature improvements then obviously that would be a benefit.
The marketing suspense is fun, but some of us have to make real world production decisions. So already known information about a build to be released in 12 hours would be nice support for paid up customers.

It is not a paid/contract shoot. It is primarily to get some stock footage and RED experience and exposure and showcase the camera's capability. Hence the desire to get the best quality available. If variable bit rate or other improvements - as has been suggested here - are available we would like to use them.

Tried that, the person that answered the support line didn't even know about Jim's post that it would be released this evening. (He said it was scheduled for later this week and when I mentioned Jim's post he said "Oh, you guys know more than we do.") Finally got through to Brent, but he said he couldn't say any more, so posted here.
The decision on whether or not to risk using a beta build is mine. Jim says it is solid - and knowing that, combined with the caveats mentioned, means that if there are any picture improvements I will try it. Having a few extra hours to play with it and backtrack to 12 or 13 if necessary would be appreciated.
Holding back the details mere hours before the release is not about being responsible to the software, it is about a tease - and I get that to some extent, but this isn't a new video game, it is a $20,000 professional tool and it is a bit annoying.

Don't pay attention to what you say. If I/we get crabby, it is here and gone. We still love you and your camera.
Jim:
3K is a very interesting addition to the lineup. You can shoot 3K, 60fps at 36MB/sec to CF or RED Drives.
This is pretty cool stuff.
Jim
3k is cropped.. a 3k sensor extraction.
Resolution for 3k 2:1 is 3072x1536, and 3k 16:9 is 3072x1728.
So is the Shuttle shoot on a 400mm-600mm beheamouth? I'd be nice if 14 was out before Feb 26th.
Testing Canon EOS mount. I have a Canon 70-200 2.8L IS and a manual Zeiss 300mm F4 Contax/Yashica mount with a C/Y to EOS adapter.
So should I try 3K - 60 fps?
It would make the 300 more like a 400.
This is my first shoot with my camera, since Erik at Birger has had it since the day after I got #206 a few weeks ago - so I don't even know what our top frame rate is for 4K - is it still just 24fps or do we have 30?
As I said before, this isn't a paid shoot, so we are willing to be a little bit experimental.

Yes I formated it before I copied the folder over.
it's supposed to detect it automatically.
but I also did it thru the system menu and it says
"No software update is available on your system."
anyone else have this problem?

So should I try 3K - 60 fps?
It would make the 300 more like a 400.
Yes, like having a longer lens, but at a lower resolution and narrower FOV.
4K still gives you the most image to work with to crop or scale in post. OTOH, that 3K sure looks real nice too, still very high rez. Oh, and 60fps... 60fps But that's 2:1 aspect, not sure you want to shoot it 2:1 :)

ok I got it... you have to unzip the Upgrade.zip file twice.
after unzipping the first time you'll have another Upgrade.zip file along with two other files, a pdf doc and a txt doc.
you have to unzip the Upgrade.zip the second time and drag over the Upgrade folder with the su.tar file inside. This is the folder which is required at the root of the CF card or hard drive.

some questions I have about the update b14:
it states in the readme.txt file of the known restrictions.
Does anyone know if these are only new restrictions for build 14?
do some of these features work fine in build 13?
for instance 4k files crashing Quicktime - did this ever work?
--------------------------
Known firmware restrictions for Build 14, RED ONE v2.0.2
* Audio playback in RED-ALERT and RED-CINE is not enabled.
* Changing resolutions with VARISPEED enabled causes image tearing
* Look File menu in place but not enabled for file SAVE / RECALL
* 4K 16:9 recording not yet supported by RED ALERT or by QuickTime Player.
* 4K _F, _H, _M and _P QuickTimes created by camera may crash QuickTime Player.
* RED-LCD plus Preview HD-SDI monitor output simultaneously active not supported.
* RED-EVF, RED-LCD, Preview HD-SDI, HDMI simultaneously active not yet supported.
* Dual Link HD-SDI outputs always replicate 720p PREVIEW or PLAYBACK HD-SDI signal.
* Audio and Timecode not present in HD-SDI outputs.
* Use meter reports in minutes rather than hours.
-------------------
it would be nice to know what issues were known and fixed in each build not only changes.
most of the listings assume you know what the original problem was and is now fixed or is it a new working feature?

You are right, too many zips. Fixed so you have the entire upgrade package as a zip file and it has no further embedded zip files...

Did you format your CF card first? Did you go to SYSTEM > SETUP > MAINTENANCE > UPDATE SOFTWARE?
BC
Can we install from an SD card? Or does it have to be CF?
If CF can it be an old small one?

Anyone know what the RECODE 36 Compression Quality Setting is?
I presume:
RedCode 28 = 27.5MB/sec & 28MB/sec peak
RedCode 36 = ~35MB/sec & 36MB/sec peak

It's not tied to MB/s. It's based on a quality level that is loosely related
to MB/s for 4k 2:1 @ 24fps @ 28 or 36MB/s.
Think of it as a compression quality setting.

i think  it is something which is picture quality calculated through within average compression around 28 or 36 math as standard :waaa: ?

Addition of Relative Shutter Speed control.
...
Enhancement of Syncro Shutter Speed adjustment control.
Enhancement of Frame Rate Ramping control.
Enhancement of Histograms to logarithmic based display.
[/COLOR][/I][/B]
Anyone care to elaborate on these?
Specially on the shutter related ones.
From the names one can try to imagine what these feature do, but what do I want them for? In which way do they differ from the old ways(pre-14)?
Do any of them affect the rolling shutter skew? (sounds likely)
Also interested on the histograms... does this mean they are calculated from the raw data and not from the rgb preview pixels? Or does it have something to do with the difference between log/perceptual and linear scales?
Hope someone can answer some of these.
