View Full Version : MXF -- will RED support this?

Hi,
MXF looks like a very flexible format for the short and long term storage of footage. It's receiving wide support across the industry and it seems like it could be a welcome addition for RED. So any chance that REDCINE could spit out MXF files? There is a open MXF project on sourceforge (www.freemxf.org) so it could be fairly simple to implement (MXFlib and KVLlib are pretty close to coming out of beta).

MXF is not a format though - it's a wrapper. You could make a perfectly compliant MXF file and still confuse any app that supports MXF (just like Sony MXF is different to Panasonic MXF). Just a thought, rather than a policy statement.

Hi Graeme,
I realize its a wrapper but I was (obviously wrongly) under the impression MXF was *supposed* to be an industry standard. What a shame if it's gonna turn into another incompatible system. The reason I mentioned it is that the Quantum SDLT 600A (http://www.quantum.com/Products/TapeDrives/DLT/SDLT600A/Index.aspx) appears to offer a great storage solution for media: a 30 year tape archive life, a gigabit network connection, and a 288 Mb/sec transfer rate. It looked like it would great for onsite backups.

Hi Graeme,
Please don't mess with MXF, it's just a pain IMHO.

It's supposed to be, but Stephen's comment is very valid.

It is a pain, I deal with it using Pana HVX200 and the XDCam,
If you get a system down it's OK but trying to get clips
to someone that does not have computer expertise is a pain.

I agree MXF is a pain. Great concept, but until software makers agree on standards and play nice, it's not going to be that practical.
Doesn't Avid Media Composer convert everything to MXF?

No Avid uses the OMF file format internally.
I think there must be a choice in Avid Media Composer for OMF or MXF. The Media Composer I'm using is definitely creating MXF files. Perhaps it should be switched over to OMF if MXF causes problems sharing files?

Ok, I'm getting old here it seems :-)
Avid is switchable between OMF and XMF per project.

In my opinion, MXF does nothing for us that we can't do better ourselves.
And history has shown there are too many non-compatible versions out there to base your development on.
Do elaborate Stuart. Is this something that doesn't bode well for Avid's file formats? What about OMF?

MXF isn't Avid's doing. OMF is.
