View Full Version : The Truth...

We don't know what we are doing.
That is the truth.
We have never done any of this stuff before. Everything is new to us. Every single thing.
We give you dates for delivery based on guesstimates. But we don't know. We haven't done it before. This may explain why we are late on so many things.
We are optimists. If we weren't, we would have NEVER started this undertaking. Realists would have never gotten past square one. By being optimists, we often times think we can do things faster than we really can. Keep in mind that we believe in the dates and timeframes we quote. If we are late, it is not because we tried to trick you... it is because we are revolutionizing an industry and we have never been here before. Did I mention how small an army RED has?
This declaration should cover hardware, software, and every other thing we are doing. Put yourselves in our shoes for just a minute and it will become crystal clear. We just don't know anything for sure. How could we?
The fact that we have come this far is a miracle. No one should have been able to do it. Which is why we were a scam in the beginning. For good reason. What we are doing just isn't possible.
I guess the point is... try to relax on us a bit. We are attempting the impossible. But we can't do it overnight. We are listening. And changing. And improving. Everyday.
All we ask for is your patience.

You've got it. From the very beginning you've been straight forward and willing to listen to us. Trust is built over time. Over the past couple of years you've greatly exceeded everyone's expectations....been open about the challenges you've had and been willing to work extremely hard to satisfy a very demanding crowd. The man asks for patience....I say we give it to him. Keep up the great work.

Jim,
I don't believe this to be true. Clearly, you have made some huge progress.
I think the problem comes with wanting to do everything and be everything to everyone. You want to please and you go out of the way to do it. But things can get complicated.
My only suggestion for you guys is to focus on the camera. Make that rock solid. I know we all want accessories up the wazoo but what good are they if the camera is missing features or things could be improved? Start with your centerpiece and work your way out. Obviously if the resources are there to have several departments working on things simultaneously, well that's great too, but I think people would be most happy to have the camera fully enabled, followed by Redcine/Red Alert stability, and then accessories.
You've come a long way. You have a lot of people supporting this movement. If the business practices are sound, and you have the right people in place, this thing is going to be a major success. Keep pushing hard.
Hope no one takes this as I'm advocating Red abandons accessories. I just want the camera fully enabled sooner rather than later, so for me that's where the priority is.

Jim,
What you guys have been able to do is incredible, trust is not an issue and neither is patience. If we all really knew how much time, sweat and tears you all have invested into this, you'd hear nothing but awed applause. Keep your spirits up, the vast majority of us are cheering you on all the way.

Jim,
Well, you know what they say--money talks. And if you want to listen to what my money has to say--you'll have to go to YOUR Washington bank--because it's all there.
It's all there because I, like everyone here, buy into your dream and I am counting the seconds until it is my reality.
You are visionary because you imagined a shore far beyond what anyone has ever considered before and a true leader because you inspire those with the ability to get you there to join you on your impossible journey.
Lucky for all of us, you are also a genius--because only a true genius could turn something so impossible into something that we all take for granted--so much so that we beg for miracles beyond what you've given us.
Sure, I can shoot 4K onto a card so small I could slip into my wallet, and, of course, I can edit it on a normal laptop--what's the big deal--what I really need to do is...?!!!
Thanks for miracles, Jim, keep them coming--we'll wait.
Best Regards,
Thom

I agree with everyone above me: the things you guys have accomplished is amazing by any standard of time, but even more amazing given how quickly you've done it.
My only suggestion would be to give less optimistic dates. Better to think something's coming later — and be pleasantly surprised when it ships early — than the opposite, in my opinion.

already speculated the delay because of the first law of RED.
The First Law of RED ONE states that for every one day of RED company's existence there will be 1.5 RED ONE camera or less number in existence in the field and for every month of RED company's existence there will be equal or less number of builds in existence in the field.

Jim... i'm kinda in the same shoes ure in right now. well not exactly.. but I kinda feel you guys. I've never run a film festival before... and it's huge... acommodating ~300 films... 100 guests in a month... all under a small army of EFC. we are like 6 people.. doing a lot. answering 300 emails a day per person.
It is new to me. and we keep listening. we keep changing. and improving everyday.
And we at EFC try to achieve miracles by the end of it.
Jim.. i'm psyched. f@#k delays.. f@#$% everything else... all that matters is that by the end of the day we get to hold something that is Beyond a Super Film Camera for fractionsssssssssssssssssssss of the cost. Even if you did not listen to any of the shit that is put out here from people who have assisted in making RED better and better everyday by complaining and making a big f@#king deal of it... at the end of the day... no matter what the sensor does.. it skews.. it has blue channel noise or whatever that can be bitched more about.. will eventually just become obsolete when you really think about the fact that; the fact always remains that every tom dick and harry will have the capability of shooting something that smokes the shit out of film.
When Red #1 came out. Film was obsolete that day. people will bitch about this fact for some time.. but soon.. very soon... their bitching will stop. and they will see any anomaly made by the red sensor... such as skewing... as an aberration that could be avoided. just like chromatic aberration. distortion.. bla bla bla.
SO.. YEAH.. obviously you don't know what you guys did. LOL. I just told you what you did. lols his ass off
You smoked the shit of film. and if you keep at it.. ull be controlling the film industry everywhere around the f$%^ing world.

Jim,
I did not know you or any of your RED TEAM members personally until joining the Red user forum. After a few months of reading posts from your team I was comfortable enough to order TWO RED Ones.
For the past Four months I have been focused on your product and believe in you and your team based on the following information I gained by writing an article for Broadcast Engineering on High-definition cameras. If you read my post in this forum you will see I took a lot of "stuff" by a few of the RED ushers for some of the terminology I used in the article, (that's fine I'm a big boy).
My question is:
Do you agree with the following posts I've re-listed bellow or am I off base?
1) Wavelet based compression. This is also used by Snell & Wilcox for many of their high-end broadcast device including the Alchemist
2) The largest commercial chip block available at this price point, allowing the use of PL mount glass.
3) A non-linear work flow that eliminates the need for a DI.
4) The use of 4:4:4 as a means to derive super clean Keys.
5) A price point that I can only describe as the equivalent to the introduction of the Sony PD-150.
Jim Correct me if I’m wrong ….
It turns out he started this company called Oakley from the trunk of his car on the beaches of southern California and recently sold it to Ray Ban for over 2.2 Billion.
Ok.. so I think with that type of financing you could put together a dam good team that could pull this off.
The clincher was this guy also owns just about any camera worth having and shoots all the time. He even had "One of a Kind" lens' custom made for his shooting pleasure.

Jim,
I think the problem is you guys did succeed in so many ways you raised the bar so much you raised their expectations. this stuff was all a fantasy in all our minds two years ago. you've done things we all secretly wanted but told ourselves it was just never going to happen or at least if it did happen it would be so pricey we'd never see it.
you know all progress requires a period of feeling around in the dark. there is absolutely no shame in it and everyone will cut you slack because you have been so open about the process. I am blown away by what you've achieved. its moved everyone forward. I'm sure all the others cammys are figuring out ways to copy what you did. you're already ahead of your time.
I think everyone here is grateful for what you guys have done so far. we're hooked. its why we spend all day pressing refresh on this site when we're supposed to be working.

My first video DVD project to edit. I kept asking everyone around me about advice. Sound levels, color, video segments, narration and all that stuff. Everyone went along with it and as soon as my 48 minute project was completed and the mass DVD made, it was then that the complaint came rolling in. The same people I asked are you sure this is ok. Wished they would have spoke up right up front.
That is what you have here. People are speaking up and you are listening making the changes. I think this is a good thing and will make the product better and better as time goes on.
We don't know what we are doing.

Ballsy approach mate - to attempt (and accomplish) what you have. I really like that kind of drive. Thanks for sticking with the plan when you clearly didn't have to. Hey Jim, there are outliers in almost any large data set, and the chronic complainers are just extraneous data points. There's a HUGE silent majority of customers who are o.k. with changes and delays during the birthing of the company, as long as they convey advancement of the product or the value.
As regards the big picture, I can't think of a single step backward this company has taken. Changes have been absolutely for the better, long term. So for my money, (and what is promised to you is a VERY high percentage of the amount i oun) don't change a thing, in re the way you change things.

Jim,
Thanks for your call for perspective. As I wait for my RED One shipment tracking numbers to hit my email in-box I recall how easy it has been, over the last few months, to become a fan-boy about this project and yet, as a professional, how I must also maintain a healthy skeptic's perspective of this one tool among hundreds that populate a set. There are so many things that can potentially excite me - my budding career, revolutionary new visions in commercials and features, off-the-shelf tools that allow filmmakers to create any image they can imagine in the comfort of their homes...
I constantly ride the fence between fan-boy and sober skeptic. I chose to buy in around the 400's after I saw some of the initial images coming off the early prototype - after RED had shown they had a potentially real device - a sober choice. I also chose the 400's so that most of the beta bugs would have been worked out by early adopters - a sober choice. I have painstakingly researched and chosen each and every accessory and tool to accompany my RED One to maximize my budget and capabilities - sober choices every one. I have avoided any hint of myopia in my thinking and participation in this forum.
But just this once...

Jim! Thank you!
Thank you for your vision for your passion and for your patience with a vocal and equally passionate community.
Thank you to the entire RED team for believing as well.
But most, thank you from the bottom of my heart for introducing a tool at a time when my career and personal sensibilities most needed it.
And that's all I'm going to say about that...
I've never been a Red "fan boy" but for the first time, I have to say I sympathise with them.
I've had everyone coming at me from every direction expecting me to solve every problem they have. Owners wanting to have their camera treated like a glass ornament with DoPs wanting to run and gun. everyone on set trying to teach me how to get the preview out and on-board monitor working at the same time. We lose 1/2 an hour per shoot with people not believing me.
I'm so tired and I can't take a holiday because I'm needed on every shoot. I can only imagine how the RED team must feel.

I read ya. I'm sure I'll be a RED user someday when my production budget allows it, so as of now I don't have a horse in this race. But I watch what you guys are up to and I think you're rockin-an-rollin and doing great things in uncharted territory. So, yes, I'll give you all the slack you need (but that's easy for me to say!).

The best sign of supreme intelligence and wisdom is a ready admittance to not knowing.
Knowing more merely makes one aware of how much more there is out there that needs to be known, learnt, done etc.
Put another way, the most knowledgable person could spent a lifetime making a list of the things they think they dont know.
Whereas the most ignorant will have only one thing on their list:-......................
1. I dont know.
Wishing the Red rebels all the very Best!!!!!!!!! You have come a long way.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on now!
You mean to tell me that some "dude" who used to sell goggles and sunglasses to bikers and surfers out of the truck of his darn car is behind the RED effort? What the hell does he know about cinematography, cameras, lenses, the whole technically complex enchilada? Shite, we should get our deposit back right away. And that "army" he refers to, they must be a bunch of hippies just like him, I mean, like, what do they know about also? What?! RED is headquartered in California, not Japan, or even Korea or China? We are f..ed!
Jim, chillax my good man, you're doing well, and the beauty of it all is that, absolutely, you have no idea about what you're doing, which is why every step in the right direction is a milestone and a sweet success. Light yourself a nice cigar, let the naysayers light up the proverbial rocket under your bottom and take the compliments of the fanboys with a pinch of salt, and keep trying to impress the person you should impress the most: your old self. Rock on dude! And btw, have you thought about touring the states selling REDs out of the trunk of your car? That would, like, totally rock dude!

remember that for many of us this forum is one of the few places where one can speak out loud and be heard ... and it feels good to be heard.
really.
So i understand that it can feel frustrating to hear many complaints and so much dissection of the product in every flaw or imperfection, but you should just be proud of this.
Also, this complaining-listening process, although painful, will sure be one of the many factor that will make RED ONE completely awesome.
ok, some dissections and requests can be quite lame, but the final result will be worth the pain :sorcerer:

I have to wait at the back of the line. I not happy about it, don't you people know who I think I am! What does a self absorbed, egomaniac has do to get some action around here, Jesus Christ!!!!!
Again so we are clear Jim, this is the new priority list. Adobeone's needs fallowed by all the other crap that you need, like food, water, and sleep. Don't make me come down there.....
Adobeone, I love you like my brothers, (those SOB's:tongue: ) but I have to say to you as I have pointed out to others.
Let your folly be a lesson... next time, oder responsibly.
edit: o.k., I made a faux paux... I meant to say ORDER responsibly. I was not implying that you eat onions and then, well, you know, (fhart) irresponsibly.

"We don't know what we are doing"
Thats a scary statement for a purchaser who is committing a 1/2 million into a system that seems to get more complex to use as the days go on.
JIM, You have big balls, I give you that, but Just tell me one thing to relieve my finance departments stress. Are you guys going to be around for the long haul like Arri has been to all of us.
You have showed massive amounts of commitment so far in getting this beast up and running to this point. You and your teams should be commended for that no doubt, but please tell me that you are in it for the long haul to make RED the new arri of the 21st century.
Dude. take a breath, a big breath, your company has miles of support as you can see in this forum. Just do it right and don't trip up by running to fast.
The only thing you have done wrong (in my eyes) is released to early.
Keep kicking those goals and don't look back.
I'm looking forward to shaking your hand at NAB and congratulating you and your teams vision.
Warmest regards
BIG T

From someone else who took on Digital Aquisition.... well I just want to say I'm impressed. The deep dark secret is not everyone who's steering DAQ knows where its going. We just work our asses off to get there. The problems you're confronting are industry wide ones, and ones that have only really been tackled by a VERY small community. You're taking it to scale, and the issues that we face day in day out here in hollywood are now being presented to the populace at large. No it's not easy, but you still get that weird sick sense of glee when you're the first to do it ;-)

RAID arrived this morning ->plugged, worked. Greenscreentests this morning. Incredible. Never had a key done in seconds before. RED rocks, RED is it and yes Jim: Only optimists can do what you guys have done, only optimists keep on doing this. I'm one of the lucky guys who has one of the first REDs in his hand, because, two years ago, I was an optimist and nothing has changed on that.

Hello Jim,
I'm based in Kalgoorlie Western Australia 600kms remote from probably the most remote City (Perth, Western Australia) in the Southern hemisphere.
I have watched for a long time a year and a half two years now not saying much if at all... learnt a whole lot (Thanks everyone on this forum. For a education a laugh a reality check)...
Jim your message and that of your special (small) team has always been crystal clear. I have faith as many others here... and I have put what money I have down in the belief of that... keep up the good work. From a small studio with a small team I understand that you are breaking through many ceilings and wow what a ride.
Thank you again...

My life would be less interesting If you actually did know exactly what your were doing.
This is all just too much fun.
2008 is going to be a Red Riot.

Jim
Jim,
Ever since you guys were a scam, you've remained well... pretty much a scam... in the eyes of those that "know it all".
But seriously, if your heartfelt admission is for those of us that believed in your vision from the onset, then it's really unneccesary, ie speaking for myself in particular.
Bottomline, fanboy or hater, Red is here to stay and there's nothing much any of us can do about that... either way. I'm here for the long haul, though.

Jim
Jim, once again, get your head down. Right now, you, and your seriously impressive team know more about 4K CMOS motion picture cameras than 99.96% of all working DOP's out there, and here.
No apologies needed. You have more balls than most in this business.
Get on with it already...
Best

A scam, huh.
Well, whatever. You've been delivering for me since that first pair of goggles someone sold me in LA on my trip riding an underpowered motorcycle from Tucson to north of San Francisco in 84.
I bet on you then and almost two years ago I bet on you again with a deposit I couldn't afford for a camera and glass.
Today I told the bank to ship you most of my life savings.
Bring on the damn scam. And overclock it.

Jim,
What you guys have achieved is indeed a miracle already. I aggree with whoever said you should concentrate on the camera first then worry about the rest of the accessories. My other worry is while RED ONE is still technically in development and doesn't have all the features ready, you guys already annouced a Scarlet....I am worry that this may take resources away from RED ONE.... I also think the RED army may need to grow!
RED POWER BABY!!! :weight_lift: (keep up the good work it's greatly appreciated!!!!)

I think Red owes a lot to you the users of its products. Its interesting to note that they have been able to get away with releasing a product that is not fully mature in terms of camera development and production work flow and are coming up with periodic builds that sometimes takes away the features of a previous build temporarily -- it would have been difficult to tolerate this behavior if their users were an industry instead of individual users.

Today I told the bank to ship you most of my life savings.
I can understand the difficulty one has to go through parting with a major portion of their life savings. That is why I always thought that for those users for whom Red is a major portion of their savings/income, may be they might have waited for a little more time for the product to settle in and see its industry acceptance.

However as I more or less said in my original comment, I bet almost a quarter of a century ago on Jim with what was, for a 24 year old kid moving to northern Cal on an underpowered motorbike, most of my spare money. Betting on him and his team again now... like old home week.

Team RED told me today they expect to ship on Monday (and if it slips till Tuesday what with President's Day, so be it.) By the end of the week, Camera 346 will be mine, my precioussssss....

Yes on both accounts. There will be those that follow and those who won't. And for those who don't, Jim will forgive them.
Seriously, what a funny question. It got my morning off to a good start with a nice, healthy laugh.
