Matt De Jesús here from New Horizons Film & Video starting the RED Users' Group in Arizona. Already met with one of the future owners of a RED One camera and looking forward to meeting the rest for potential collaboration on rentals and projects. Please contact me as soon as possible. We have a few marketing ideas that are time sensitive. We want to strike when the iron is hot!
Please contact me at matt@filmandvideo.com. We are willing to work with Red owners from neighboring states to across the globe (we're thinking international here!)

I'm still trying to decide whether or not to go. I may not end up buying my camera, but we'll have to see how things go. There seems to be a good group of cameras in AZ and since I'm really a director it may be overkill.
If I go to NAB I will only be staying for a couple of days...new baby in the house, can't be gone too long.

Just found this forum off the main site, I am down in Tucson and know of one other guy down here who will definitely be getting a RED.
There might be more since less than %15 are on the map.
I am probably going to NAB from the 17th on.

Matt you were talking about making shirts but Jim said in another thread that there will be shirts available a NAB, and he didn't want people putting the logo on their own shirts. Just a heads up.
On another topic the Apple event is by invitation only, any chance you'll be able to score another invite?
Matt De Jesus
03-20-2007, 11:06 AM
Yes, I read that thread as well. We could still do shirts, w/o the offical logo, and still look pretty cool (just depends on the design).
E-mail me all your contact info and I'll send it into Apple for the event. I'm hoping they still have openings.

Matt, glad to see Arizona represented! I am in for any pre-NAB get together, it's a fantastic idea. I may be high on the list for the camera, (1228) but can't wait to get my hands on it... It will be a nice addition to my other HD camera packages.
Side note, anyone who is purchasing a red camera should put themselves on the RED map. Great way of seeing who and where people are in the state that own a package. I found it on the main page of this site.

Thanks to everyone for a great meeting last night. We are very excited about collaborating with such a visionary group. I see a very bright future for production in Arizona. The RED camera will help raise production values and set new standards in our industry. Together, we will establish a new paradigm for quality work done in this state.

Great map posting Todd.
I would say Entrance #1 to meet, however, once we get there we should look to see if we could travel down that North corridor to enter just above Red's booth. I wonder if that area is open prior to the show opening? In years past I've entered in so many different places- not the main entrance, but can't say for sure if this area is open for walking traffic areas. Let's see when we get there.
I'm glad Apple is not near Avid anymore. Seemed like oil & water.

I do believe there is a sidewalk on the North side of the South Hall. If we meet at entrance #1 by 8:30, we'll have plenty of time to see if we can enter on the North side by the RED booth.
-Matt
P.S. Thanks Todd for posting the map. It really helps us who are visually oriented.

Hey Rick, et al
I know that everybody is anxious to get things rolling and start the cameras working and such, but I think at this rate somebody should know exactly when they will have camera in hand before the dates are put in place.
I had a strong feeling that there was too much optimism about getting the cameras soon and I have a feeling it may go a bit slower even still. Not being pessimistic here, just want to error on the side of cautious optimism. :)
I hope everybody is well.

Hey Everyone,
We are still playing catch-up after our week long stay in Vegas. After I checked with several different sources at NAB (including Jim Jannard), The closest they could place the shipment of my first camera (#18) is around the end of June. Seeing how it would be a good thing to have at least a month to shoot and edit a 4k demo reel, I would say that the end of August, beginning of September would be a better time to have the media event. More people will be in town and it will give us more time to plan.
That being said, how about Monday the 14th of May for the next Az Red Users' Group meeting? Same place, same time. Let me know!

Not only are we waiting for cameras, but let's not forget about waiting for FCP support. Last I heard at the show was that FCP6 was to be released in a couple months but the support for Red was going to come after that. How long is that, nobody knows. I would guess no more than a couple months after initial release but it sure would make it easy to have it ready to go when the cameras finally start arriving.
I'm sure there are work arounds out there (Scratch), but if you want to work in 4k your going to have to wait it out. If you don't care about 4k, you could always downconvert to whatever flavor of codec you prefer with RedCine.
I'd vote for a change in venue for meeting. It was pretty cramped last time, as well as being hard to hear what was going on at the ends of the table. I could arrange a meeting in downtown Phoenix in the studio of the First Studio building? Basically 1st Ave & McKinley. Would that work?
I'm out of town on the 14th. Could do it anywhere from the 17th on.

Would like to come as well. My wife is pregnant and our C-Section is on the 21st so before that would be Fan-Tabulous!
Let me know where "the usual" place was so I could make that if it is chosen.
Also, I work at a large church off of 43rd and Northern, Pure Heart Christian Fellowship. We have a 700+ seat auditorium with a 9X12' screen with a Sanyo Projector with 3000:1 Contrast Ratio. Let me know in anyway how I might be able to help!

You will be able to edit straight away in FCP (or probably any other QT supporting NLE). The specific RED support in FCP due later enhances the integration and gives you some more options to play around with. But you can definitely use it to do an offline edit for example.

Rob,
What we really need to know is if we will be able to edit in FCP 6 with the end results being a 4k master that we can then project at 4k using the Sony unit. Also, what hardware will be needed to get 4k out of my computer to the 4k projector? (physical connections and all hardware requirements)
Thanks,

The meeting is not tonight. I had originally planned for the night of the 14th, but it looks like we're going to move it to help accommodate more schedules. Also we will pick a new location. FCP at the moment cannot do 4K, so no. What you do is edit an offline and then conform that to your 4K. Which is what we did with Crossing the Line.
I don't know much about connecting your computer to a 4K projector. We use specialized boxes (like a KG or QuVis, see http://www.red.com/gear-we-use.shtml) to do the playback. The KG we used for NAB supports 4K playback and 7.1 (I think) audio output at the same time.

One of the latest steps in post-production to do color grading & correction (amongst other things). You can send your FCP timeline straight to Color. However, Color has a max of 2K at the moment.

Hi, I have not looked in this section of the board in a long time. I'm located in Phoenix and awaiting a reservation in the first 100. Are you all planning something interesting in the area? I'm not a professional shooter, and have reservations about renting (unless perhaps I go along with the camera), so I am not sure where I could fit in. The reason for my interest in the camera is for my own personal projects, and is not in the realm of typical use. I do have an interest in possibly getting involved in the production of cinema or other broadcast projects.

The next meeting is scheduled for this Thursday (Nov. 1st) at 7pm at the UFCW building, 2401 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix (Central is under construction, so you may need to enter from 3rd St.) We will have the camera and footage to show you. It will be a great chance to check out the machine. Everyone is invited, so if you know someone who is curious about the camera, bring them along.
Call or email me with any questions.
Thanks,
-Matt

Just like Rick, I will also not be able to attend this Thursday. Work conflict of course. I wish I could be there to share in all the Red excitement & conversations. It truly is an amazing camera.
I gave Matt a copy of a variety of un-graded 4K footage that I was able to shoot, wish I could be there to go over my experiences so far as well as see additional footage from Matt, and anyone else willing to contribute.
I've got an idea. Would it be crazy to actually set a "regular" date and time for the Red User Group meetings? Maybe like every first Sunday of the month- 6:00 pm or so? Or maybe, every even or odd month if once a month is to difficult or to much to ask of everyone. I'm sure over the next 6 months there will be PLENTY to talk about relating to RED!
Just my two cents.
Hope to see everyone the following meeting...
Alex

Thanks Matt for the great presentation and all the hands on time. It was great to finally get to prod, poke and tweak. And the images do live up to the hype. Can't wait for the next set of modifications to get done and see what they bring.

Are any of you planning to hit up NAB this year? I'll be there, but leaving the night of the 16th (best man in a wedding...gotta get home, lol). I'll have a decent sized group with me, but it's always nice to see AZ faces.

Good evening AZ RED Owners/Users.
I hope to receive my RED ONE this month. (April 2008 #1667). I've been using Macs in commercial video production (among other things) since the early 90's.
Currently using FCP & Shake on an 8-Core Mac Pro with 16GB Ram, 3TB Hardware RAID and 30" Cinema Display with (2) Sony HVR-Z1U's (Wide+Telephoto). I also have a fully outfitted 10' crane/jib mounted on a Pickup Truck for remote use and a 12' x 15' Green Screen Studio (W/Ultra) in the East Valley.
****
I have to put in my final accessories order in the next few days, I would greatly appreciate any advice on what may be missing or essential in the Phoenix area RED community.

Hey All,
Even though I'm not a Red owner I'll be the 1st AC on a feature in May using a Red Cam and I'll be at NAB all four days.
I also work in the film department at ASU.
Love to meet up with some AZ faces at the Red booth!

Don't know if there are any RED owners in Tucson, but we may purchase a Scarlet when it comes out. I know that's a few months away, at least. But maybe I'll be able to help you out then.
