New Macbook Pros... You'll be waiting until at least April. Intel has not released their new line of mobile chips yet. They're not even in the hands of qualifiers and testers yet. Maybe there by the end of the month... Shipping by late March if all goes well, new Macbook Pro systems within 2 to 6 weeks after that. Although, Apple has been doing pretty good lately at wooing Intel into giving exclusive product and initial availability. They must be paying a premium over other OEMs... That must be the "Apple tax" at work.

I stand corrected...Jeff, you suck. But only because you are the bearer of bad news...maybe I should just go desktop then for now?

Adrian drop on an 2.8 octo core...Apple latest pro desktop. Friend of mine just got a great deal from amazon, tax free...around 2600.00 I think. I personally dont shop from amazon but they have some solid offers.

Check out some test and results from BAREFEATS HERE. (http://www.barefeats.com/harper7.html)

There results indicate that the 3.2 is not enough of a speed bump from the 2.8 to make it worth an extra 40%. Save the money and go with a 2.8, stop over at transinternational (http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?category=2646) and load up on the ram.

best of luck.

Don't know if I agree totally with this. Rumor is that there is a special event at the end of feb (26th I believe) Some think it's Macbook Pros--but you may be right on the chip schedule. Or maybe it's a new 40" 4K, multi-touch display....

I got lucky. I'm waiting on new monitors for the Mac Pro (and procrastinating while video cards/3rd part memory works it's way out) but I still wanted a Macbook pro for the field. I picked a used 2.1 Ghz up with 2 Gig Ram, 200mb 7200rpm drive for $1200--not a bad deal.

Yes, caught that about the rumors about an event at the end of February. I doubt it's about the Macbook Pro, unless Apple and Intel have something entirely secret -- like the custom CPU implementation inside the Macbook Air was. I suppose it's possible, but I don't see new MBP systems now unless Intel has fallen way behind schedule with the 45nm mobile CPUs or they have cooked up an early release exclusive just for Apple. But that would be a first... So far, Apple has released systems following Intel's CPU schedule, just like any other Intel system integrator. The Macbook Air doesn't have a new CPU, but rather a new CPU packaging that Intel was developing for upcoming ultra-mobile devices. The only other exclusive that Apple has pulled with Intel has been the 90-day exclusive on the 3GHz xeons last year, which really only lasted about 30 days because HP started shipping them to corporate customers.

I'm willing to bet that a special event this month has more to do with iTunes and the AppleTV update that seems to be in some kind of release limbo. Lately, Apple hasn't been making product updates into special events. Only the introduction of new products.

For now, I think the best bet for a Mac system on short notice is an older 8-core Mac Pro with the X1900XT video card, some good deals out there. Or an older revision Macbook Pro with the X1600 video chipset.

Adrian,

We are also in CT and need RED shooters. Zeiss primes and 2 Cooke zooms are in house but no REDs for about 6 weeks.

I'm sorry Jeff, but where are you getting your information? I'm in the market for a penryn laptop (Intel 45nm), although not necessarily an apple one. I've been reading about new models with the newest chips since CES. Admitedly, few of them are already available on the market, but saying that they won't be until April is just wrong or I am misunderstanding you.

Do a search for penryn on Engadget. Dell's shipping. I think HP too.
The biggest disappointment for me was no new MacBook Pros in Macworld.
Last I read is they could be announced "any of the next tuesdays".

I don't think Intel is having problem making the new chips, it's just the systems integrators who are taking their time:sad:
