Once again I find myself in need of the Reduser community expertise. Here is my question: Does anybody know if the Arri Mattebox MB19 will work well with red. Thinking of getting this system and any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

No reason why it wouldn't... as long as the rod standard of the particular mattebox you purchase is the same as your camera's bridge plate.

Brook, Thanks for that info. I just wanted to get some thoughts before making a final decision. Thanks again for your help!

Yeah it will.. the ARRI 19mm adapter for the MB19 will work on the standard 19mm RED rails, and the 15mm offset will work with the RED ARRI 15mm plate. Ditto for the arri LMB-5

Hi Jason,
I've got a MB19. It's 10 years old now and hardly used, the reason: I don'l like it. It contains a lot of plastic and is not as stury as an MB20. In fact, the filter frame hodler broke twice. The MB20 is a bit more expensive but also much better. Much more value and versatality for the money.

I too just got hold of an MB19 for a decent price and Im more than happy. It suits every sensible lens except when you need to go 6x6 (mb14) for those optimos etc.
Inside scoop from arri: keep your eyes peeled for their new MB-29 coming later this year (probably). Its the same as the MB19, but with MB20 modulation and is much sturdier.
I saw the prototype, it looks nice.

It is mostly metal construction, the only plastic elements are the sides of the filter frame holders which are in a protected position and the shade itself is either a tough plastic or fibreglass, I can't decide which. Over all it is a much more robust design than the Chrosziel equivalent for example. the MB20 is a more modern design but quite a bit more expensive and not widely available on the used market.
How did you manage to break the filter frame holders Hans? I can only imagine it would be through a knock to a partially slid out filter frame. The plastic elements are sort-of sandwiched in metal so they are quite protected.

Thanks again guys for all of the insight. Very informative to hear all of your comments. My buddy nailed the one I was looking at so I may hold off until the new MB29 is released. Or if santa wants to do a mid-march trial run (just to keep the rust off) and graces us with the Red model, that would be ok too. Thanks again for the feedback. Gotta love this site! My girlfriend isn't on the same page but I think she is coming around. I switched her homepage to reduser and stuck a red sticker on her yoga mat.

The Arri MB-18 is very nice too. It's 4x5.65. You can get it 15mm or 19mm based. It comes stock with 3 filter stages, 2 standard and 1 for grads, but you can add more if you need to. A bit on the pricey side but sturdy as hell.
