Hi Jim,

I have not read very much detailed spec. for your new lens. I have 2 'wishes'.

1) Minimium focus distance of 18" (45cm from the sensor)

2) Lens T stop does not change as you zoom.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Best wishes,

Stephen

Hi,

Minimal breathing would also be cool, but with compact, lightweight & good value, one can't expect everything.

Lots of ED glass, aspherics, easily removable zoom barrel shell to get to eccentically mounted ball bearings to adjust tracking on the variator and compensator optical groups, intrchangable rear collimating group to vary focal length range, twelve blade iris and a mount system ala Cooke.
Oh yeah and a two tone color scheme using that beautiful pale beige and sea mist green like on the Zeiss refractor telescopes of old.

And all this with 4K precisions of much less then 5 micron Misterium pixel size and $30K price for it will make everybody ecstatic!!

I believe the lens is already priced under 10k

Macros facility would be really nice!

Have the zoom lens made in such a way to allow for a modification to take place at a later date that could add some form of auto functions.

Allow a red extender to be added and removed easily.

Naturally i expect red to make one:wink: (extender)

As light as possible given the 18mm wide range so i suppose i cant expect much less than seven pounds?

Oh, that Stephen starts more useful threads like this one:biggrin:

Yes, but if you add all these extras?
Frankly speaking to get full capability of 4K out of this camera the zoom has to be done with outmost precision, both from the design point of view as well as glass and mechanical design. 30K will be a bargain and people will be lined-up like for a hotcake.
I think I will settle down on some good Zeiss primes lenses.

Actually, I have to write down your wish list, you have to have a lot of experience with lenses?

Andrew,

Actually between Angenieux, Cooke and Canon everything on everybodys wish lists here has already been done! Including the truly terrifying macro system on the Canon K35 zoom....

Chuck, did you check technical specs of the lenses?
We need sub 5 micron precision in the lenses projected image on the sensor.
Also any zoom movement can’t change the image and aberration, more then that.
I asked some manufactures around for technical specs and looks like some very crucial data is the secret. Only Carl Zeiss is wide open for that but well, they don’t wary about competition too much. The only way is to rent shoot and test, problem is that there is no 4K camera out there for less then 5K a day to rent. I know only one.
Do you know where to get Cooke’s service and tech specs?

Hi,

A suggestion for the 18-85 Zoom and any other future Red lenses on the wider end:

No writing (ie. 18-85mm T 2.8 RED) on the front (facing the subject) part of the lens housing. When shooting through glass, with the lens up close, the reflection of such writing can be a problem. Of course it's easy to paint over with black, but what a shame to do to a pretty lens.

As Stephen suggested Close Focus is GREAT to have.

Cheers to the Red Team,

Michael

All good suggestions but I would imagine the zoom design has been locked down for quite a while.

Hi,

As it's not intended to ship soon, I hope that's not the case.

Lot of lead rime needed for the lens; I'm ptretty sure it is a done deal but I wouldn't be surprised if most of this wishlist is part of the design.

I still can't figure out how they managed to get the 300mm finished so soon?

Therefore i am speculating wildly that the red zoom will be ready earlier than envisaged. I hope so as i am number 14 zoom and need it ASAP.

Chances are good that the 300 already existed.

Zooms are exponentially more difficult to pull off than primes...

So who's gonna be the first to pry their 300mm open so we can see the optics?

A nice, short CF distance would be nice to me... but I just want it to be lightweight. I know it's currently classified as a "lightweight zoom," but that covers a wide range of weights.

I'd be happy to open up your 300 Brook.

There is a lot of mis-information about lens "glass". Someday, when we get some time, we'll de-bunk the myth, marketing and magic from reality. Glass quality vs. lens design vs. construction techniques. It makes for a pretty interesting story.

After being repeatedly told that Oakley has made the highest quality lenses in the world for Sunglasses. Something told me you would know all there is to know about making high end Cine Lenses...

*sniff* Do I smell optical grade polycarbonate? Something deep down is fighting the very thought of it but it would explain a lot of things...

A cine lens with polycarbonate elements? Oooh, sexy. Probably very light. Seriously, would that work? I suppose it would, but, well, er... Hmmm... something to think about I guess, but I'd still bet the optics are still "glass".

Hell, they've been using plastic lenses in single use camera for decades.
