Why have my .RDC folders become packages

A quick callout for help here. I'm working on OSX 10.4.10 and my Raw file folders have suddenly become packages which I cannot open. Its just the actual folders that contain the .R3D files and the QT proxies. The files are not accessible from within FCP either. In the finder the arrow that allows you to expand the folders has gone and they are now identified as packages not folders. I haven't added or updated anything I can think of.
Any suggestions?

Try show package contents. Did this happen to any other folders? It sounds like a system problem.

your right, the files are still there, if I change the suffix they return to being folders, so your right, its some sort of system issue. Strange that it is only misidentifying the .RDC folders, weird , I'll keep working on it.

Any ideas on the culprit? I just started experiencing this as well.
