as you can see from the attached pic, I'm pretty happy about the arrival of RED #329. rest assured i took her out to dinner first (I'm a gentleman).
not sure if it's literarily possible to express my thanks to Jim and the RED team for this unequivocal revolution. the couple of rough test shots we've done in nothing but available light look like something out of a gorgeous arthouse film - even before being massaged in REDCine.
now if i could just find the time to write that script.....
there's a ton of joyous unboxing photos if anyone waiting for their camera wants to live vicariously through us - just let me know.
P.S. big thanks to Randy for all the customer support.

Man, if you just had one more mic...

if i had one more it would be on there. our aim was to load it up with as much extraneous sh*t as possible. the coolest thing is - none of them are plugged in...
my only wish is that our MB-20 and FF-4 were here in time for the photo - that would crank the wank-factor up to at least 14.

i was hoping to be a part of it - but oz buyers were encouraged to do a separate group buy (for warranty reasons etc.) - which looks like it fell through. i sucked it up and ordered direct from arri australia - ouch...

Wow.. A big Rig.. how do you transport this monster for field use/run & gun?
Now, I understand why people love the simple handheld 6 pound elegance of Sony Ex1.

that pic is just an experiment to see how much we could mount on the camera (and in preparation for the PimpMyRed contest). we've had it in a variety of stripped down configs for steadicam, handheld and the Skater Mini dolly - works a treat.
eg. the Sound Devices MixPre and Schoeps mics would only be onboard for tripod-interview setups where we were recording M/S sound. any other time we'll be using the TetraMic as the world's coolest onboard surround mic.
the modularity of the RED is just one of it's 53 huge drawcards IMHO....

HAHA.. hell yeah. I was thinking..this guy should participate.. lookin forward to seeing your super rig. =)
By the way.. what kind of mount do you have going there for your mic? Who makes it and what model?
Dan Graetz
02-15-2008, 02:02 PM
the M/S setup is mounted in a Rycote Modular Windshield - it comes with both a pistol grip and the boom pole adapter you can see in the photo. we've then used a Manfrotto camera stub to step the thread down to 5mm. the TetraMic uses the same stub - but needed a thread reduction ring to adapt the mic-stand suspension mount.
it's not ideal yet - very difficult to orient the mics precisely and have everything tight. but it's on there!
