Hmm..while waiting on the accessory prices, my mailman just delivered the mail.
In the stack this message stared at me:
http://holckowen.com/sony.jpg
It says "Why take chances Anders?"
Inside it says "Sony HD, a risk you don't have to take"
And continues: "Anders, you know that in your field of work it's about getting the best possible images with the least possible risk...."
Hmmm...spooky stuff with my name printed on a sony flyer...

It's no wonder - all these global giants are pissing money away on crappy TV spots and stupid mailings. OMG I got a CD from Sony - maybe I should just sell my house and buy a CineAlta. Mercedes wants to dump Chrysler and Matsushita wants to unload JVC. JVC - Japanese Video Crap

Me too Deadmike, I wrote a bit on the original thread about not actually pinpointing it on the map for potential burglars, that said it isn't exactly hard to find out anyones address having put it on their along with names etc. Another fact is for alot of people they will be openly advertising the ownership of the camera anyway so disguising the wearabouts of their home or business will be of little consequence. I'd be more worried about someone stealing the camera if it cost $100 - 200k but given cars can be stolen and passed off alot easier I think anyone targetting these cameras would be pretty stupid. Unless they were from a competing company that wanted to scare RedOne owners into hiding hehe!

I didn't, come on do you think any one will come to Kansas!?! You could see the black sedans 2 miles away LOL! I find it pretty funny that Sony or whoever would look at the map and collect info and send out mailers telling you not to risk it. I won't be surpise if somebody from Sony is on the reserve list just waiting to get a Red and take it apart to see how it works. Okay I have to much time today, G5's are rendering so I'm posting! You need to do more rendering. ...Look at my post count, too much damn rendering. All I can do is browse reduser ebay and whatnot. Not enough CPU cycles left to do much else. I've even got my Macbook Pro working overtime on the render farm lately, it's nuts. All should be done in the next couple days though and then I can do something more constructive. Like try and win that snowboard.

I still have projects that aren't even capture yet! So I'll be in renderland heaven later this week! The snowboard wouldn't do me much good:tongue:
Now some Red rollerblades would do the trick in this part of the country!

Now the truth IS stranger than fiction!!
I guess ANYTHING could happen at NAB ... good thing the convention center is not in a sky scraper huh?
What you should do ... is hire a stunt man to do a "full burn" gag (it's only $3K-$5K to light a stuntman a blaze!!)- dive through a wall on fire - shoot it in 4K RAW in 60P- and project that in the booth! (LOL!!)

Ya know, there's a liquor store right across the street from the brewery. The sign reads "No fresher Coors sold anywhere!". If any of you guys are ever in the area, I'll gladly pick up a six pack or two to share. And Chuck, if you feel compelled to make an up-stream detour on the way into town, that's fine by me. There's far worse things floating down the creek anyway.

To see if you should get an HDCAM?
In 24 months an HDCAM will look like
(and be) old technology. 3:1:1 compression,
and you need an HDCAM deck to
digitize your video into a system
that needs HD-SDI. And then you need
some pretty good RAID's to edit HDCAM....
Thats why Panasonic has done so well,
decks that can digitize using FireWire
and P2 is the cheapest HD deck you can get.
I hope the RED footage will be as easy to
work with as P2 has been. DVCPRO HD should
be a good off-line edit solution for RED 4K.

Seems like they've started to take precausions and actually budget in that these Red/SI non-camera thingies without a real recording solution to a proper format might - after all - be real and could cause them some harm even in the rental market.
Thus they have put their 160000 employees to some real work - writing real letters in a real format to all suspectible customers out there.
I guess in a year, they'll actually pay you to use one of their cameras.

This type of marketing is gathering pace in the UK. My wife got a postcard from the car dealership with a photo of her model of car and the registration displaye on it. Karen your cars first service is due!
Sony want to protect their future investors so they put the seed of doubt in peoples minds, why change and take a risk. An attempt to personalize the connection between company and its customers. For some it will work initially since from what i have read on film producers lately they don't like to take risks, particularly if the budget for equipment forms a small part of the whole!
So its a reasonable strategy to take.
I will look forward to their change of strategy when red one has been out for 12 months though.
We are still asking much of red too much perhaps? I just hope they succeed in every way possible. When you examine the possibilities that might go wrong, you do wonder how they can possibly get all of the things absolutely right.
I wonder if red team has plans to arrange a test comparison between the various cameras that will compete with red. This would be great if it was done and presented at NAB

This is the 'risk free' Carl Zeiss vario sonnar (yeah eat that Cooke) lens off my FX1 after less than a year - had a 60:11 error requiring replacement of entire lens block!!
(Wow, you see lens IS interchangeable just like that mythical/hoax RED camera.) The replacement lens is TOTALLY soft ...oh.. I mean auto-engages Sony's bokeh®™ at 2.8 full telephoto - (returned twice for re-callibration!?!) I mean just gorgeous dreamy images with NONE of that pesky sharp foreground that plagued Evin's so called Nikon lens tests.

After my little climb trying to get Sony to stand behind their HDcam I doubt they are SH***tng their pants at the management level. These people do not ever see or actually talk to any customers. Hmmm...maybe we should all go out a re-read Michael Crichtons 'Rising Sun'.
I think the Drunk Uncle has sobered up and not gonna take it anymore.
btw, Red is not competing against all of Sony, just the high end camera division, and Red may actually be better funded than them. Sony is an umbrella org with lots of different divisions. Madison Media (Vegas) is seperate, Playstation3 is seperate...., consumer cameras seperate..plus with PlayStation3 sales not doing so well, the top executives have other things on their minds. So...while to top brass is distracted, time for give em a gut punch. hehehe
To be fair, once Red starts selling, additional support personnel will need to brought on, whether it's phone, or field, the internal cost of doing business will go up. The good thing is with the significant reduction in moving parts, simpler more effective design...support overhead should be way less compared to the HDCAM.

anti-red campaign appears to be in full force...
Full force? I doubt it.
RED is the meat in a Sony/Panasonic and Arri/Panavision sandwich.
Arri and Kodak spent considerable time and effort countering the introduction of HDCAM with every trick in the book including a funded "documentry" from Kodak and a very misleading film out test from Arri that prompted Danish film students to do their own film out.
Add Panavison and Sony to the mix and the quartet has considerable reach and ability to twist and obfuscate. Sony have brilliant wordsmiths that are wizards at making you believe 4+4+4 equals 3:1:1
But compared to the inept sluggish introduction of HDCAM where a 10 minute tape cost $125 and playback machines were treated like royalty RED will hit the ground running.
Rather than the handfull of hopefulls that were shooting HDCAM demo "stuff" on borrowed cameras RED will have, in a matter of months, 100 owner operators shooting a diverse range of subjects.
No expensive recorders required.
Mike
