Hey Everyone,
I am a little confused as to how to edit Premiere Pro 3 and export out to edl (or xml) and injest into redcine. I dont think premiere has xml support, I think only edl, so is this supported yet, or is there a trick in doing this (I think redcine only accepts xml?)? If so, would someone kindly share that information, or is there possibly a tutorial somewhere that shows how its done? Thanks everyone.

Premiere pro can certainly do EDL. One comment on XML: I see many people on this forum talk about XML export/import in the same vein as EDL export/import. I would tend to think that at the back of mind is the import/export XML feature of Final Cut Pro. Where as EDL is sort of standardized among various parties. Final Cut Pro XML import/export is just Apple's way of doing things. XML is just a language like HTML and has inherently nothing to do with Apple, Final Cut Pro, Red, or movie making. So even if Adobe (or anybody else) comes up with some sort of XML support it may not be taken to be directly compatible with Apple / Red / etc. Heck, that is what Automatic Duck is doing -- just read in the Apple's XML and set corresponding functions in Adobe After Effects.
Also, if your editing is just edits, and not a whole lot of transforms, dissolves, etc., would it make sense to make a reference Quicktime movie and load that in RedCine? Final Cut Pro lets one make a reference QuickTime movie -- that is a very fast option, does not make an entirely new movie, as it just creates a skeleton where each media sample is actually pointing to source media elsewhere. I like that feature also when I am just moving edited QT files around between different applications, and I do not want to create large QuickTime files. I do not have Premiere Pro in front of me right now, so I am not sure if it lets one make a reference QT file.

Thanks for the response Joofa.
I suppose my only concern is obviously how to handle a ton of Red footage (this has been everyones worry), and Redcine with some type of xml, edl, whatever support by whatever NLE is satisfactory. I am just trying to see which road i'll need to take with Premiere Pro CS 3 and whether or not it'll work with Redcine in terms of using reference files and then injesting in Redcine to eventually export out via 1k,2k,4k, or whatever the preference may be at the time to injest those Tiff's or DPX files into After Effects, etc. I am unaware of Premiere making reference files, but id assume Premiere would have to be able to handle r3d files before that could happen.
So just curious if anyone knows of exporting out reference files in Redcine...editing this in premiere, simple cuts, no dissolves, etc and then exporting out an edl (or similar) and injesting into redcine to export out a higher quality end result.
Hopefully this is feasible right now, but im just not sure, so hopefully someone here probably has the scoop on what to do with premiere. Thanks again for the response.

One could always create a RedCine XML from an EDL in order to have that work with Premiere Pro or any other NLE generating an EDL. At the very least, the process would need to add handles for dissolves in order to ensure the frames are being grabbed. Having handles as a use preference is key to conforms where changes may still happen. That is why I am a proponent of the NLE generating the pull list for RedCine with user defined handles, etc.

Is there currently a way of converting or creating a Redcine xml from an edl and also adding handles? or has this not been done yet?

I don't believe it has been done yet.

So us Premiere Pro 3 users will just have to wait a little while to utilize the xml/edl support I suppose then. Hopefully someone is working on a script to convert this or maybe redcine will (in later releases), handle edl as well as xml.
