View Full Version : Gasping in Tokyo

Yes, that was nearly all of our reactions after properly test shooting with RED #378 in Tokyo this last weekend. One big ol` cumulative gasp from everybody who was there - a couple of filmmakers, a cinematographer and the all-round indie film guru of Japan.

Let me introduce myself, I am the other half of Visceral Psyche in Tokyo and have been here for the past couple of months pensively preparing for this moment.

We had all seen footage on the forums, watched crossing the line. But it is truly a different matter when you see with your own eyes. A religious experience you could say, and if not, well, pretty darned close.

Let me give you an example.

Our very first shot on the weekend was whilst setting up in the studio and was TWO SECONDS LONG. Essentially it was Paul pressing record to test if Red would actually record. Why not, eh? ;)

So the shot captured both bits of the studio interior AND the road outside.

But in post something AMAZING followed. Inside the lighting was read a little under F1 on the light meter. Outside it between F10 and F11 I believe.

And you know what? Outside didn't blow out! And the detail of the studio that was a little under a F1 was visible! And not dodgy!!

We then proceeded to Shibuya for some night footage - if anybody is wondering where that is, watch Lost In Translation. Yea, that place. Super crazy lights, the world's busiest crossing. All that jazz. It was guerilla filmmaking at its best, and RED performed sublimely given the rushed conditions.

Some funky Japan footage coming your way soon, so stay tuned, but before I sign off let me make a brief mention of what I believe it takes to sell Red to a client:

A) Get them to shoot something with RED.
B) Load footage onto Redcine in MacBook pro.
C) Watch them gasp as they play with the footage.
D) Restrain yourself from doing the Balki dance-of-joy as they repeat the mantra, "I really can't believe this!" whilst staring wide eyed into the footage they shot a mere few minutes earlier.

A great day was had by all and we are greatly looking forward to being the premiere Red Rental house in Japan!

Hi Visceral, I am going to be in Tokyo this summer. I would love to get together with you and make some beautiful footage together. Do you think you could let a fellow RED USER sleep at your house. Stair can be a problem for me.

Hey grandpa, my house has stairs to it so it might prove a mite difficult, however the production studio has wheelchair access and great little overnight rooms so we'll see what we can come up with for you! :)

Give me a holler when you're in town!

It certainly look like the future is RED.

It certainly look like the future is RED.

Which is rather ironic given that Fidel Castro has just resigned. :)
