I read sometimes is doing banding in the skyes (highlights) is that true?, if it is it was due to the build (to the Red) or the beta of the scrach workflow with Red?

Hey Jon,
There were builds very very early in the development of R3D support in SCRATCH that were exhibiting banding issues. But that was a bug, was quickly addressed, and has not been an issue for many months.
Cheers,
Lucas

I have also seen numerous occasions of people yelling "banding!" when they are actually viewing quicktime proxies and not the original R3D's
Of course this wouldn't relate to Scratch, but it's just a side note to take into consideration

Ok is great to know. As i PM you I been testing the program and is a great aplication makes the workflow with R3D realy easy, i didnīt get to see anybanding thats why I asked. Is great to know that it was repared a long time ago.
I will keep making questions as I use the trial version for some tests.

Throughout the camera iterations, I've never seen banding in the RAW data itself. I've seen it on viewing images and movies, but in all cases, has been the movie (ie Quicktime) or the display (ie Photoshop being naughty) that has caused it. There was, as pointed out, early on a bug in RedCine, but that is long since gone.

Where are you seeing the banding? Is this during QC while using the DVI output? Is it over SDI?
I ask because it is possible you are seeing banding due to rounding down to 8-bit.
When I have played around with various image processing software, the viewing is always limited to 8-bits, even though it might be processed at a higher bitdepth, like 32-bit float. It is not until I render out to file, and then convert to 8-bit with my own tools, that I know if the banding is in the source, processing or just an artifact of rounding for QC.
There was an open source 3D project called Elephants Dream. They provide 8-bit PNGs so that anyone can use. A lot of compression tests have been done with it. The 8-bit source has terrible banding. I was able to get the original 16-bit render from them. I have the frames in both 16-bit EXR and TIFF. I use these to test the processing pipeline of an app.
I can give you the files it you want to pass it through SCRATCH. Then I can process the output and confirm if any damage was done.

Stacey,
You can send us the file and we'll be happy to run it through our Scratch.
