Is this working anywhere? I´m failing on all my monitoring options except the RED lcd here:
RED HDMI -> DVI adaptor to Cinemadisplay 23: no signal, LED on the display blinks a few times.
RED preview out to HDSDI Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme (setting:HDTV 720p 50): no signal, some flicker, (Black Magic sw version 6.6.2)
RED HDMI -> Consumer HDMI 720 tv: no signal
(I know how to switch outputs on the RED.;-) (And I know that the consumer tv thing is not really working) (yet?)
All the best,
Jochen

We had the same problem with consumer TV plasmas. It is an odd rate on the output and our HD/IO box wouldn't lock either. Ended up on a SXGA computer monitor that would lock to it.

Yesterday I tried this and got HD-SDI to BM to Apple 23" CD and it worked. But, could not get HDMI to DVI to Apple, it just blinked and wouldn't turn on. Has anyone gotten the HDMI out into the 23" Apple CD?

Oh, and when I did get the 23" Apple to show my the output from the Blackmagic, it was only a cropped 720p in the center of the display. Any idea how to get the image scaled up to the full display?
Steve Sherrick
03-02-2008, 01:56 PM
I believe it wants to do a 1 to 1 pixel, for pixel display, so that means that if the maximum resolution of the monitor is say 1920x1200, it will fill the true pixels of the image, rather than blowing it up to fit the screen. It's the same when I send it to my Dell 24" from the HDLink. Or are you referring to the BM capture cards?

I'm going directly to the Dell 24" with HDMI to DVI. I don't need the BM HDlink. The Dell blows up full screen. Haven't tried the Apple yet.

This is from Graeme
"720p footage is left sitting in the middle of the display with a large black area surrounding it. From an accuracy point of view, this is totally correct as the HD is mapped pixel for pixel, but it would be nice to be able to ask the HDLink to "fit-to-frame" for presentation purposes. If you only need 720p HD, it therefore might make more sense to buy the 20" Cinema Display instead for an even more cost effective approach to HD monitoring"
So if you are getting 720 preview to fill the screen there is a blowup of some kind happening to fit the larger, high pixel screens.
In Black Magic Prefs you can tell it to fill the screen, but it won't be 1:1

Right, and the Dell will do it's own blowup unless you override that and tell it to display 1:1. That's what I've always done because I really didn't like the blowup that the monitor does. Which is why I'm going to grab one of those 1708s for on set monitoring.

Yeah, the Dell 1708 would work out fine. The image will fill up the screen nicely. I don't like the blowups either, that's why I recommend keeping at 1:1.

I've had good luck with the LG Flatron f-Engine series....such as L206WTQ-BF etc... they do expand to fill the 1680 x 1050 pixel screen, but it is a 16:9 aspect panel.

Hi chaps,
Can I just confirm that the SDI/HDMI outputs are only live in build 14? I'm on 13 and going SDI - HDLINK - DELL24" gives me nothing. I'm in PAL land so have tried switching between 50hz and 59hz in camera.
So do I need build 14 or is it something else?
Cheers

Sorry, Stuart, that's 16:10 like any other computer screen. If it fills, there must be some non-square scaling going on.

I'm in NTSC land but that same setup gives me picture just fine. Which Dell model is it? Is everything set up right from the camera side?

Hi Steve,
I believe so. Set to Preview in th viewfinder settings, plugged in on preview mini sdi, cam set to 50hz..
Anything I'm missing?

Yes, Seems to work fine on build 13 and 14. Although it crops out the data at the bottom of the Red LCD. Haven't tried on 15 yet.

Hello
I have tried to connect HDMI link to 23 inches apple monitor, but unsuccessfully. Maybe you could tell why video review was not possible? maybe I haven‘t set some options?

what's the difference between 720 and 1080p viewing from red? I just got the dell 23". i can see the everything but the menus. what view is that? and when i push the button on my Red LCD and it zooms in 1:1, the dell matches it. i'm not sure if i should be returning me dell if it's not giving me all the viewing options.

i had problems with the hdmi output all the time. sometimes it worked, sometimes not. was like voodoo ;-)
i was told to use the hd-sdi out and then convert hd-sdi to hdmi (short cable run)

Not sure what you mean. If you're monitoring playback in 720, it's 1280x720 59.94. If you're viewing in 1080 it's 1920x1080 23.976 4:2:2 or if dual link 4:4:4. In order to see menus using the HDMI output, you need to select DVI in preferences.

Under Monitor>Preview>Menus(DVI)
Just keep in mind if Red EVF and LCD are hooked up you won't get the 848P mode on HDMI.
Also, just to make sure there is no confusion, the 1080 output on playback also has the ability to play out other frame rates, such as 24, 25, and 29.97.

If you can afford a 30 inch CD from Apple it actually works from the HDMI with a simple HDMI->DVI converter. That is if you switch the preference in the camera to DVI and you get a slight crop on the menus at the bottom for some reason but the image fidelity is pretty good, even if it isn't a 1:1.
And yes that's me with the silly hat ;O)

Why isn't it 1:1? What is needed for 1:1?

The 30's resolution is 2560 x 1600. The Red outputs 720p live or 1080p on playback. 1:1 would be a small square in the center. not sure how you would set it, but honestly I'd love to see a 30" playing back even zoomed. It would be amazing and I would bet it would be far better for judging critical focus than a 17" pixel for pixel.

The Dell 30 inch has an HDMI input, so no converter needed. But man, a 30inch would be a hassle for location work. Probably looks great as a client monitor though.

coming to this thread rather late but hoping someone might have some more recent info.
I'm trying to monitor 1:1 on a mac with a decklink card and a 23" monitor.
through the SDI I can get a little preview in FCP log and capture but can't get it up to 720.
HDMI input doesn't seem to work at all and I don't have an HDMI>DVI converter handy (which from previous posts doesn't look like it works anyway).
any thoughts much appreciated.
