Are you out there with a camera yet, Jim???

Jeff Kilgroe

Word on the street is that Jim Arthurs isn't getting his RED after all. :(

Mine is ready to ship, but I'm still waiting on a few other things to fall into place. I'll probably have it sometime next month.

Paul Lee

Bummer for Jim. After seeing what the guy can do with a 200 I was looking forward to seeing him work with RED.

Jeff please let us know when you're set. We've got a monster show we're working on and it's always good to know who else is out there with cameras. Do you know anyone else, other than Firestone, who has one out here yet?

We received our camera in Feb. about 3 weeks before an underwater shoot. We will be showing the footage, the camera and the underwater housing at the next Denver Final Cut Pro Users Group.

Rich Lerner and I (as Rocky Mountain 4K, LLC) took delivery on our Red a few weeks ago. We're each going through the camera thoroughly and getting more excited as we go. Rich and I have done a couple of Colorado features together and we're looking forward to the first one with this camera. Being a film guy the ability to control DOF is what sold me on finally going digital.

I'm off to Red Day on June 20.

Hi Colorado RED folks,
We are looking towards a very full production slate this fall, and to that end we may be in need of more cameras, and possibly some AC's. If anyone is interested in either a long-term rental (1-3 months) or even sale of their RED, please PM me as there may be some good opportunities. Hope RED is being as good to all of you as it has to us!

Rocko,

I know of two people who had reservations in the CO Springs area... Neither of them have bought the camera yet. One of them being Jim Arthurs, someone who used to frequent this site a lot.

AFAIK, there really isn't a whole lot of film/ video production in the Springs, most everything is located in Denver and Boulder. I'm sure there are some smaller operations there, but none that just pop into my head other than Mr. Arthurs again.

I've been trying to get my camera to do some work at the US Air Force Academy in the Springs, but I must not be finding the right people to talk to. I'd really like to get it into the cockpit (or strapped to the belly) of an F-20II or F-16. Oh well, haven't tried asking for a couple weeks, maybe it's time to try again.

Hi Everyone.
Maybe a little late on this thread, but I'm getting my Red at the end of January, would love to team up with other shooters if anyone needs another rig for a project. Most of my work is in extreme sports, but I'm psyched on all kinds of cinema. Looking forward to meeting some other members of the community soon.

Hi Chuck (and other Coloradoans...)

Y'all may want to check this out. Colorado's own Ed Sauer will be presenting on shooting underwater footage with RED, among other interesting behind-the-camera stories.

The event is Thursday, November 6 and it is the lead-off event for the Boulder Adventure Film Festival (http://www.boulderadventurefilm.com/), and runs from 6pm - 8pm. It will take place in the new theater of the B Side Lounge (the old Trilogy), where we will be drinking and talking shop:

http://www.thebsidelounge.com/

With Ed and myself, we'll have at least 2 RED shooters present on the panel, so come on down and a little more RED love to our event.

Chuck -- you may want to consider signing on for next year's panel. We are always looking for people doing interesting work on adventure films.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Under Water and Over Land: An Outdoor Video Producer's Workshop

The only community conversation of its kind -- producers talking directly with
producers!
Join some of our area's most talented adventure and outdoors shooter, directors,
and producers for the only conversation that puts all of us together in one
room.

This year's speaker panel will include Zachary Fink & Alyssa Fedele from Soul
Fabric Films, who have been working on a documentary about outrigger canoeing in
Hawaii, Ed Sauer from Watering Life productions, who shoots underwater footage
with a RED Digital cinema camera, and Brendan Kiernan
from Futuristic Films, who has produced projects on the Himalayas, El Salvador,
and regional mountain town culture.

The panel has shot all over the world, in all kinds of fast and extreme
environments, both underwater and over land. Each panelist will give a short
presentation with clips from recent projects and then be available to talk with
you about gear advice, developing your own productions, and marketing your
masterpiece. This is an opportunity for you to ask local pros questions about
how to hone your craft and take it to the next level.

The panel will be moderated by Meryem Ersoz, who runs the
planet's largest nature and outdoors video contest, and will be handing out
information on other resources that you can use to improve your production
skills.

There will also be a free gear raffle/giveaway after the presentation. This is
your chance to score some new toys.

Will anyone CO RED owners be getting the 18-85 lens soon? I am #380 on the list and will be expecting my number to come up anywhere from February to April according to current estimates. I'd love to get my hands on one for a test drive before deciding whether or not to buy.

Howdy folks. We're RED in Carbondale, CO. We've had our R1 since October 08. We're a group consisting of a long-time professional commercial photog, some muscle, and a longtime stills shooter with a lot of technical ability and post skills.

We're shooting a few projects, largely remote, wilderness and extreme sports, but also cultivating some commercial/advertising work through the pro in our group. Currently doing a lot of testing and learning in field - mostly on backcountry skis and foot so far - and in front of this computer.

I've connected with meryem, look forward to interacting more with folks in CO. We're happy to gain experience and friends through renting or sharing our equipment and our spare hands when you all need it.

Hey Colorado Reds,

Any experienced DIT's willing to work for free on a Red shoot in July? We need all the help we can get and we're pinching pennies anywhere possible. Please PM me if you'd be interested in helping us out. It's an 8-day shoot, half are night shoots. Yes, it's a tall order, but it doesn't hurt to ask...

Hi Colorado Red Users.

I am getting my Red kit up and running, and I wanted to ask if the community has any 'industry standard' rates. I'm of course increasing my rates from what I was charging for HD services, but I don't want to undercut anyone's rates. Would it be possible to PM me or post your rates (rental and day-rate shooting) so that I can be comparable? I'm all for competition but I dont want to compete on who can discount the furthest.

Cheers,
Chuck

Meryem -

A bit late, but we jsut shot on the Grand Canyon for 3 weeks with Birger only/Canon glass only, worked well for the most part, some glitches related to me not upgrading the software before I left, but not a killer.

So Birger in Colorado...waiting for my Impero....

Hey Anson - I hope you got some good stuff on the river. Any chance that you will be at Mountainfilm this weekend? I was supposed to shoot an interview there with Vance, but it was cancelled at the last minute...but since I have the pass anyway, I'm going. There's some other stuff I'll be shooting, some b-roll for another project, so I'll be bringing my camera.

Good to know you have a Birger. I'll have to find an excuse to bring the Monster to Aspen, if you would be willing to let me pop it on there so we can see if it works. It's a great lens. Huge, but great.

Anson Fogel

No, no MountainFilm for me - too busy shooting - the rivers are high around here so we're shooting kayaking, and interviewing the folks that are here for big water.

The Grand provided about 1TB of R3d's, audio, timelapse sequences and stills...when the shooting and real life calms down I'll be locking myself in a dark padded editing cell going through it all...preliminarily we are very very happy with what we got. I'd imagine its the first red on the grand?

yeah, happy to check out the monster anytime you are in our neighborhood. We tested the older monster C 400 1.8 (or is it 1.2?), worked great on Birger, aperture control only of course, did not show lens metadata of course

I'm pretty sure that you are the first RED on the Grand, I'm jealous, although keeping the camera protected from the silt problem must have kept you on your toes.

I may be out that way later on this summer, although we are slated to post a feature film, which may keep me tied up. Summer is already flying by, but I'll find a way to load up the Beast in the camper and head towards Aspen. I have 4K 800mm dreams!

More shooting, less editing!

I'm in Westminster, CO, and though we shot our feature in Illinois, most of post production will take place here in CO.

Hello, fellow Colorado RED users and film makers.

We have recently finished the edit on our feature film and are now looking for someone (local to Denver/Boulder area would be fantastic) to do color and sound design. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The film is a dance/drama/comedy starring several So You Think You Can Dance finalists, but it's not your typical dance film... there's actually a great plot and story! [smile] Think of it as an indie film in the vein of Little Miss Sunshine or Juno that just happens to have some really fantastic dance scenes. We've got some amazing locations, and color will be really important to the project.

Our DP is Chicago area veteran Peter Biagi, who has has worked on more than 50 feature films, including two Robert Altman films (as camera operator), The Company and A Prairie Home Companion.

I'll be working on cutting a trailer together this week so you'll be able to see what we're doing, but we'd like to start getting into dialog about color and sound as soon as possible, as we are starting to submit to film festivals and need to have a final product by the beginning of the new year.

We're excited to start connecting with RED users and film makers in our new Colorado home!

p.s. In response to the post above: I'd love to see this! The Vimeo fisheye footage is gorgeous; I can only imagine what this would look like projected on a dome.

Hey all,

We rented 2 ArriSun 12+ HMI's from MP&E a few weeks ago for a swimming shoot, solid experience, although some stuff is still coming from their non-Denver outfits, and there were no cases for the heads and ballasts, but overall, super happy to have them in Denver now! We had them gear shipped to Aspen as it was a short notice and deadline shoot, but they talked about using the bus, which we mountain people will do in the future with them.

Hey Colorado Red folk,

I'm trying to put together a premiere in the next month for a short film we did. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good theater to hold the event that we could get for $1k or less? Right now I'm looking at the Lakewood Cultural Center theater. They have 316 person capacity and a theater-grade sound system. Not sure on the screen or projector specs.

In my experience, real theaters will not book a Saturday night event because it's their money-maker day. We'd prefer not to have a weekday show, so that's another difficulty we're running into. Since we shot Red, we are pretty adamant about NOT using theaters such as the Bug or Chez Artiste.

I'd love some advice or tips if anyone here has some good info!

Erik Bien
02-16-2010, 02:39 PM
You could always submit it to Cinebarre (http://www.cinebarre.com/filmsubmission.html) in Thornton, and maybe get it screened for free. They rent also, but I have no idea what their rates are.

Jonathan Stevenson
02-16-2010, 03:01 PM
I'll definitely give them a call, thanks for the tip. Although we'd love something a little more central to Denver. But, if the price is right...

Jonathan Stevenson
02-21-2010, 09:14 PM
Talked to Tamarac Square. They've got a 240 seat theater with a 2k projector for $750 on a Saturday night. Now that's a damn good deal. Plus they sell booze!

Meryem Ersoz
02-22-2010, 07:48 AM
That is a nice theater, the Tamarac. For a premiere, however, I'd suggest Starz - they have a large email list. Not sure what the projection options are - but people are used to attending indie film premieres there, and their email list has a big indie fan following. They will aid you in getting the word out, in a way that Tamarac probably can't - something else to consider besides price.

Jonathan Stevenson
02-22-2010, 08:04 AM
Thanks. I'm actually not too worried about getting the word out. We sold out our last show two years ago just from word of mouth by the cast and crew, so I'm actually pretty confident that we'll fill all 240 seats. Anyone here is more than welcome to attend, I'll make sure to put up the information once we book the date.

That's cool, Paul! ...I don't know of any other MX's in town and it will be some time yet before I can send in #1110.

I'm DIT on a job next week that will be shooting RED MX and the two cameras are being shipped in from somewhere else. I don't know all the details yet.

Howdy Colorado Red's!

I'm premiering my new film CORE at the Boulder Theater on April 7 at 7pm. It's an 80 min action sports film shot 99% on Red. We'll be projecting in either 720 or 1080p courtesy of boulder outdoor Cinema.

Here's the trailer for the film, hope to see some other Red shooters at the premiere!

Good deal Chuck, looks rad!

Jeff, we're loving the M-X, it really is like finally having an Epic or something. Tungsten and high ASA work is completely different.

Hello, all. We've finally got some evidence of our hard work for the past year, so I thought I'd post something here. We completed the color grading process at film workers a couple weeks ago, but we are still working on our FX and composite shots, so what you see here is only first-pass color (done in Adobe Premiere).

We are getting ready for a festival circuit run and will likely have a couple of local screenings (both Boulder and Denver).

@ Chuck, CORE looks pretty awesome.

@ Paul, I've been playing with some M-X footage here and there that others have sent me. Can't wait to shoot some myself. The job that was supposed to shoot this week with M-X cameras can't get the cameras now. Supposedly, the party that was supplying them are still waiting their return from RED. So we're still proceeding with the shoot on regular M cameras. Bummer, I was looking forward to M-X...

Jonas, not bad looking for a one-pass color in Premiere. Looking forward to seeing more as it develops.

PLEASE RSVP WITH JON STEVENSON AT jon- at- chaptertenfilms dot com.

Come and see the World Premiere of Stiffs, a short film directed by John Schmidt! The show is FREE! APRIL 17TH, STARZ FILM CENTER AT 900 AURARIA PARKWAY IN DENVER. Seating begins at 6:45pm, curtains at 7pm. (You cannot be admitted after 7pm.) Parking is Free with Validation at Starz Film Center.

The comedy follows two Coroner workers, Kurt and Archie, who get more than they bargained for when a dead body comes back to life during their shift!

Not only will the Premiere feature the first showing of Stiffs, but we will be gathering at Starz for a MUCH more important reason. Rosalind Gullatt, a friend of the production, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a mother of two and has no health insurance to pay for treatment! So, the Premiere Night will serve as a great venue for holding a Fundraiser for Rosalind! Please bring a generous heart and help Rosalind get the treatment she needs!!

Starring Evan Elizabeth, Swann Christopher, Jon Stevenson, Jared Van Doorn, Christine Olyer, and Meegan Kiefel, the movie represents over 2 years of hard work and never giving up. Shot in July 2009 over 9 straight night-shoots, Stiffs employed the most talented people in Denver, including Scott Park, KC Weatherman, Brandon Fryman, and SO many more!! We couldn't have finished this film without the hard work and support of all of our friends and family.

Produced by Tyler Herron and Theresa Byrne, the film is the second collaboration from John Schmidt and Jon Stevenson. Remember, the show is FREE!! DVDs of the film will be available as well. After the show, we're all going to Braun's Bar and Grill across the street for an After Party!!

Can't wait to see everyone there!! (Please no one under 13)

The third thing that I ever shot on a RED camera (the first was test footy at the Butterfly Pavilion and the second was stock footage of kayakers...) is finally now out there in the world and screening this Sunday at Starfest:

http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-29234-Denver-Film-Industry-Examiner~y2010m4d13-Upcoming-Events-EFP-Thursday-at-the-Bug-Gathering-of-Heroes-at-Star-Fest

We shot and I edited THE LEGEND BEGINS, the "making of" for Jon and Mark's feature film...I made it in my free time, and it took two years from conception to completion. I wish Colorado had actual budgets for this sort of thing, because it really is one of my favorite genres, since it combines elements of both doc and feature filmmaking.

I always wanted to make one of these, so this one was a labor of love. But I think it tells a very interesting story about Colorado indie filmmaking. It's a film for filmmakers -- and especially for us.

I hope they screen it someplace locally where the cost of admission isn't quite so high...

Any new MX bodies in Denver?
Also, does anyone in Denver received their 17-50 zoom?
Looking to rent both in late July.

Thanks!

I'm also interested if any of you Colorado guys will be getting the RED 17-50 soon. I didn't order one right out of the gate (shocking, I know). Anyway, I'd love to see one and play with it before I finish up my order and cough up $6K for one.

I've got an MX RED now... I don't know about availability though. It's pretty well booked through the end of June. Jon, I'll email you.

Hey Colorado Red peeps. This is Blair S. Paulsen (#19) posting from Chris K's lapper.
My Epic got booked on a paying gig this weekend and I already have a plane ticket to attend/shoot the World Flying Disc (Frisbee) Championships in Fort Collins this Saturday (7/23).
There's no money or anything (though I would be happy to fill up your gas tank out of my own pocket) but it should be a killer opportunity to shoot some high rez slo-mo of some fast moving sports action.
If you have the inclination to bring your Epic out its a fun scene.
Contact me directly at alacritymedia (at) cox (dot) net if you're into it.

Peace - #19

The 5th Annual Boulder Adventure Film Festival Filmmakers' Workshop - Saturday, Nov. 5th 10am - noon

This is one of Colorado's most fun filmmakers' events. We get a great line-up of filmmakers to present, and the audience is always loaded with filmmakers, and their participation makes this conversation best-of-breed in our state. You get to meet and chat with a lot of interesting people working on amazing projects. We try to keep it interactive.

Full schedule, including the film schedule, is here:

http://www.adventurefilm.org/Files/PDFs/2011/AFF_2011_PR.pdf

Be there November 5, 2011 from 10am - noon at the Boulder, CO REI media room - followed by a brunch sponsored by REI.

The panel line-up is here:

Ryan Van Duzer

The Boulder Daily Camera's "Out There Guy" shares secrets to building a career as a freelance adventure video journalist. Van Duzer has produced, edited, and hosted short segments for the Travel Channel and was recently a participant on Discovery Channel's reality series "Out of the Wild: Venezuela." Ryan is known for documenting his distance biking adventures, from Maine to Key West, Vancouver to Cabo San Lucas, and coast to coast on a cruiser bike. He was recently selected to host the travel show "Paradise Hunter," set to air in 2011.

Jesse Placky
Jesse is the owner of Condorcam. Its centerpiece is a specialty cablecam system which Jesse designed. The Condorcam has been used to capture unique aerial imagery for mountain biking, surfing, skiing, cyclocross, and other extreme sports. He has operated robotic cameras for all of the major sports in Denver, and he has also traveled the world to operate at large scale sporting events. Jesse got his start in production working with Oceanwatch Production Group in Southern California as a POV operator and Rigger for sponsored events.

Bob Carmichael
Bob is one of Boulder's pioneers in adventure filmmaking. He has an Academy Award nomination and an Emmy to his credit. He has over forty climbing-related projects to his credit, and his rigging crews remain on the cutting edge of vertical shooting techniques. His first film, Break on Through, has been recognized as one of the major influences in adventure sports filmmaking. Feature action directing assignments have included high seas, large-scale pyrotechnics and water combat for the 2nd Unit of the film, Navy Seals; stunt climbing and a descender fall of 2,000 feet from the sheer cliffs of El Cap for Star Trek V; and twenty-story operating cameraman descender drops during the making of First Wives Club. His short film, Fall Line, a film on extreme skiing down the steep east face of Wyoming Grand Teton, was nominated for an Academy Award.

I'll be facilitating the panel and shooting a few promo clips of it using my superlight EPIC-M adventure doc configuration.

Camera will be on display throughout the show.
