I've started to itemize all of the accessories I need upon the delivery of my Red One.
I plan to go with SLR lens indie approach with a tight budget. I have some general ideas on what this configuration will be like. I need some help on what exactly I'll need to get my setup together for a reasonable budget. Here's break down of what I have in mind.
1. Lens mount. From what I've seen so far on this board. Red will have a NIKON mount soon. The Birger Nikon mount is no where near to be completed. But Birger Nikon mount is really what I want. Should I just get the Red Nikon mount for now and get a Birger Nikon mount later. If I do that, what am I going to do with the Red mount?
2. Rod system. I plan to use Zacuto's red setup since it's lighter and more affordable than RedRail system.

3. Petroff Mattbox/FF/Filter trays

4. LCD and EVF.
5. Batteries and Red drives.
That's what I have in mind for now. Can anyone give me a hand here to make this shopping list a bit more complete?

I'm also trying to figure it out... what tripod/mattebox are you going with?

I plan to go with Petroff MattBox for now. It seems to be the best bang for the buck.
I have no idea about the tripod yet because it all depends on the final weight of my set up. Any suggestions, guys?
I'm more concerned with the Nikon lens mount at this point. I haven't heard anything on the delivery of Red Nikon mount. Birger Nikon mount is still many months away I think.

Had a look at their site, dont seem to make a 6.6" box?
how does their largest accommodate larger lenses like a 10:1 zooms, optex 10.5 etc? etc?

Iv'e been going through the same thing. I looked at Zacuto stuff and I'm not sure it's really much cheaper, but it does look nice. If you need the RED cradle for the hard drive I think the starter pack they sell is probably the way to get started and then swap out stuff from there.
Regarding the lens mount I think RED Nikon mount is only 2-3 weeks away. Hold out for that and then when Birger does their Nikon mount consider it based on how the Canon Birger guys are making out.
Tripod - I've got a Cartoni Gamma which is on the LIGHT side of possibilities rated at 35lbs. In a few days I'll be able to give it a good test. I figure if I ever shoot really big lenses etc. I'll rent a much more expensive tripod when I rent the lens. If I need to reduce the weight of RED I can pull the battery off and cradle it under the tripod. I hope it doesn't come to that - but a lot of people are saying you need a tripod rated to something more like 55lbs. That's a dramatically more expensive issue. I'll do what I can to lighten the camera.
You could look for a used O'Conner 50D and have it serviced I think. That might be one of the best options.
I remember back in the dvxuser days Jarred saying people should set up to a Cartoni Focus for their HVX and they'd be ready for RED too. RED turned into a much larger beast than a lot of us had hoped and it significantly alters the cost of ownership.
I think most people are going to be way better off renting a RED. Or buy one for your movie and sell it when you're done. That'll happen a lot I bet.
