View Full Version : OK... the bad news.

We are very happy to share good news with you. But we also promised to be open and honest throughout the entire process.
What I see as our biggest challenges are:
1. Getting our camera fully feature enabled at the time of release. That means that the 1st customers will have to bear with us and do software and firmware upgrades for a couple of months. Record RGB is one of these types of features.
2. Start up of production quanities has been lowered so we don't have as many customers to update until we begin shipping full featured models. I expect that we will present a timetable for serial number release at NAB.
I do NOT believe that this will slow up getting all reservation holders their cameras by Sept. or Oct. as previously stated.

Well, that is not nearly as bad as I was thinking! Today has been full of such great news, this news seems very bearable.

I'm sure we're all VERY curious to hear when we are likely to get our units. Basically we all want to get ours and then have you stop making them for a while. :construction:

So its not going to be the first 100. Will the initial run be limited to 50? Um, I don't know why I even ask, as I don't have a reservation. But it is fun to know. (Btw, I AM buying a complete red package.)

Ya know Jim...I don't consider that bad news. It's never bad news when someone is honest and straight-up with me. It's also not bad news because its another indication to me that the RED Team is being thorough and paying attention to details. IMO I don't see any bad news in your post...
I do NOT believe that this will slow up getting all reservation holders their cameras by Sept. or Oct. as previously stated.
That is a whole new definition of the word BAD I was previously unaware of!

It just means that we, your first 100, are also your beta testers, I'm cool with that. In fact, it makes us even more of the pioneers.

I'd be happy to upgrade the firmware on my camera #68.
When you say the first run has been lowered when do you expect to be shipping camera #68?

No one can expect a manufacturer to ship a lot of cameras knowing they will have to invest in providing upgrades. Most manufacturers would just hold back the release of all the cameras to save money for themselves. Not only honest and open but also very committed to releasing cameras in time for NAB.

I'm stil stoked (after all the 4 hours of sleep I got) that all future firmware upgrades are going to be free....
One could think you might be pretty serious in wanting your babies to be the best in the world, Jim ? :shifty:

This comment is peculiar to me. I personally feel - like many of you - that the RED team is doing a great job. It is also my opinion, however, that some people are bordering on "fanboyism" [I learned this term on the internet]. While I respect the work that the RED team is doing, I want to remain grounded. They do not walk on water.
Did I misinterpret your post?

ok.. lol
now i didn't save the previous text so i can't post it again but i'll try my best..
what i said it was: though nothing personal.. some comments from fanboys (where did you get the idea that i had learned this from web?.. you're wrong brook!) they can have a negative remark..

No bad news at all. For my point of view bad news are something like that Jim is giving up, overall RED project is canceled, reservation holders have to pay extra $ 2.500 to get a camera body or all in that kind of direction. Fortunately nothing happened like that. So one more time still there are no bad news.

A wee bit.
To rephrase the previous post:
After waking up from a 4 hour sleep, I'm surprised to find out that all future firmware upgrades will be free....

No worries! :) I merely quoted you because I misinterpreted your post as one of those previously described "fanboy" statements. I still feel that some people are a little too supportive of RED - almost blindly supportive. I think they're great, but not that great.
I'm glad that we sorted this out in a clear, mature way.
[heavy edit ~Brook]
[now the director's cut:]
"blindly supportive" that's the term.. and i think they're great (where did you get the idea that i thought they were not?.. again: you're wrong brook!.. between hecklers and fanboys, there's a middle term that i think we can find a vast majority.. red's potential customers..)
mature way not only after, but it also was before..

I am making this post to add some brief humor to my previous statement. Sometimes it seems that people are so supportive of RED that RED must be paying them off for the positive hype! Har!
[heavy edit ~Brook]
[now the director's cut:]
"..must be paying tem off for the positive hype!.." well, the words are not mine.. i'd just say that red is a positive hype but sometimes a few of you seem to think there's Santa Claus.. red is a business company and yours (if you want to be REAAAAAAAAAAAAL customers and not only the geek-type) it isn't exactly the same 100% of that one coming from your provider..
i'd take a fair 50%..
and you're forgetting the other 50%..
this is a business relationship.. not a playground one..

Don't worry, I understand how you could think that. People are expressing their feelings after witnessing a totally different (positive) approach to their needs, hence the unusual statements.
As the positive energy spread here "feeds" all of us (whether we perceive that or not), it also "feeds" the RED team. It's almost as though we're giving them something back, like a cycle of energy.
I believe positive thoughts are meant to be shared.

You know, my name is on their bank account!
It’s the same account that before RED, showed me a balance >$50/70K to get production kit which gave me similar quality/range….not to mentioned post!
The $2,500 swallowed up my expected lcd/battery.
The something ‘extra’ for the early birds got combined with ‘specs may change’ to give me more than I expected at the onset.
We’re all lucky the RED project has arrived at that point and most people know it.

I for one was laughing so hard I could not breath well... Things tend to get a little too serious on here anyway... Don't worry about it Brook.. It's camera, not a discussion on nuclear weapons use.
Have a good one!

Post represents someone's individual thoughts. Changing someone else's posts creates a false appearance of a person signed in the left corner.
Although it is clear why there was a need to interfere and who caused this need, I don't support this way of action.
If I ever step out of line I would like to be warned first. After saying an honest opinion and sharing my positive thoughts I don't like seeing someone, anyone editing that.
No one has the right to change what me or anyone else wrote here. If it turns out to be unsuitable - basic deletion is simple and effective.
Yeah - this time it was funny,
but
-playing "Deus ex machina" will
1. provide material to the ones who want to grab a hold on anything to crap on RED and Reduser.com
2. lead to loosing the respect of the people who perceived Reduser as a quality worldwide community

It would indeed have been nice to be able to read the original posts besides Brook's edits. Luckily I remembered some of the original, but if I would have got online just now I wouldnt have known what the fuzz was about and why censorship was applied.
On the other hand: childish and offensive remarks with no other goal than to offend should not become the major tone of voice on this forum, so in that way I can understand your action, Brook.
I am glad the Reduser forum isn't about arguying who has the best resume, the most feet of footage gone through their camera or the most credits on IMDB, and therefore has the most right to speak. Let it stay that way.

i'm a red supporter.. as i already said but maybe it was deleted (i just don't remember) and we've been since the beginning.. (the filmmaker's gang is a gang indeed.. :)) that's why these concerns over our interest.. the customer's interest.. it is very important..
the red company and their employees have their own.. we have ours.. and sometimes it seems a few of (most enthusiastic) customers are forgetting this rule.. it was not me who invented it..
edit
i'm not american but i love america because america was made from this rule.. and i'm not talking about strictly on free speech but there's a relevant one which rules our lifes: law of supply and demand..
be careful: don't break it!

Free speech--A valuable right that we Americans cherish. But it is only free from abridgment by the government. Had the government come in and edited, I'd be hoppin mad. This is Jarred's forum, though, and it is technically not free--we are here at his suffrance! :shifty:

Having been a longtime moderator for various RED forums, I don't think I'd have made the same editing choice as Brook did, but let me say this: he's a very cool guy, a good moderator, has a lot of knowledge in this industry, and donates a lot of time to this forum.
Keeping the above in mind, I want to dispel any notion that I broke any forum rule in my postings - that's not the case. The words that were placed under my name by Brook were not my words - that is the case. After my post was edited, I simply asked for it to be fully deleted.
Anyone who knows me knows that I'm all about humor, teasing, and joking! Brook's actions were intended as humor, and I, of all people, can appreciate that.
End of story - no harm, no worries, time to move on...
