Due to money constraints I can only be at NAB for one day.. I am coming just to get to the RED booth and see the camera. I am reservation holder 324.
I am wondering the best day for me to be there.. My goal is to meet the team, hold and play with what will be my largest purchase in 3 years, and get a feel for things.
Any advice on the best day to go would be hot.. And hurry, tickets are going fast..
Also, any Red heads that would be willing to let me crash somewhere?
Thank you all
Jay

Hey Jay,
I think everyday will be real busy at the RED booth. They were busy last year even though they'd just recently announced RED and had just mockups to show. Fast forward a year: now there wil be functional cameras, 4k workflow demos, published specs, and they'll be taking orders for cameras. I expect humongous crowds at the RED booth this year...
The first day of exhibitions, Monday (4/16) will be pandemonium from the opening bell - ever see those old movies about the Oklahoma land rush! Tuesday and Wednesday will be way busy, but If you can only come for one day I'd suggest one of those days. The added bonus of traveling to Vegas on Monday or Tuesday is that the 120,000 people attending NAB will have already traveled there over the weekend. You should get a better flight situation (fare + seats). Try TravelZoo for good last minute rates.
For a place to crash, hopefully one of the hundreds of guys who visit this RED User forum will step up and hook you up. I would, but my wife goes with me to NAB every year (she's also my Production Coordinator). She has a sense of humor, and friends crash on our floor all the time at our California house, but we're looking forward to this also being a micro-vacation for us, so nobody can crash on the floor this time.
Hope this helps dude...

Thanks Gibby, actually that helps a lot.. It also brings up an interesting issue, I hope someone on the RED team will answer this. As a "paying" customer, I would like some time to hold that item which will cost more than every car I have ever bought rolled into one! I am happy to fly where ever, but is there a chance we could have some place to go to see our camera before purchase? NAB is a very expensive venture, and Gibby makes it clear that "quality time" will be all but impossible. I trust RED, but it's only reasonable to ask "can I hold this a minute and get a feel for it" when spending what will be for me, about $29,000.00
I am happy to fly somewhere to do this, but it would be a good thing to have this chance

Hey Jay
I feel the same way as you do - I have a feeling that NAB will be insane for Red this year and all kinds of people will be pushing and shoving and gawking.. I really think reservation holders, especially those with their shiny R keys should get some kind of special access - I'm not saying Reservation holders are better than non-reservation holders, it's just that we put money down on this thing way back when and should be entitled to some private lap dances with the camera, that's all..

Guys, you need to realize you pre-ordered an unfinished product. Dont expect Red to hold your hand...if you want this kind of attention, wait until the product is fully released. NAB is not a place to get an in-depth personal view of any product, take it from someone who has been attending for 15+ years and purchased millions of dollars in equipment. NAB is simply a showcase, usually to announce new products. Personal time is at a premium, as there are over 100,000 people at this show from all over the world.
If you arrive very early in the morning on the first day, you will have your best chances to "hold" any product...shortly after that it is a madhouse. This is especially true for a product like Red, whose booth will likely draw the largest crowds.

With all due respect sir, I was not referring to any special access at NAB. From what I have read on here, NAB is a madhouse and simply NOT the place for quality time with any product.
Rather, my idea was to select another time and place, or better yet a number of times and places that customers could go to in order to pick up and research the camera in more "physical" ways.
That said, I happen to know that Jim's a little busy right now. Perhaps the better way to go would simply be a 10-14 day money back guarentee for all reservation holders. The idea here is simple: "Get what you want, try it out, ask your questions, and if you have some serious problems feel free to send it back in excellent condition and we'll refund your money."
This seems to be the best solution until there are rental house that keep RED's in stock.
This will be the very first camera I have ever bought that I have not "seen" or worked with beforehand.
It's all good though...

Just keep an eye out for the Ninjas from Sony, Panasonic and Ikegami hehehe. I think Ikegami is going to have a hard time justifying their prices too.

Yeah! Is there? If you guys could at least give a yay/nay about the existance of a Red mixer. Because if there won't be, then we could plan one on this board by designating a specific water hole on a certain night. I think one guy from the UK already started such an effort, so it would be nice to know if the Red mixer conflicts with his efforts, etc.

I'm dying to see what the traffic's gonna be like at the RED booth this year! I mean, is it going to be like, "real busy?" Or is it going to be like, "super-f*ckin'-ridiculous-call-security," kinda busy? By the way, Thursday is usually the day other exhibitors visit other exhibitors' booths. I wonder why Brook said to go the FIRST day???

I think the first day has a very special appeal to many RED heads.
Yes, it will be a mad house.
And you may not get to talk to the team much......
But the excitement of sharing the moment in person has real appeal. Like the difference of going to a live music concert or watching one on a DVD.
Last, year I was going to fly in on Wed. By Monday 9 AM I knew that was a mistake.... After spending a very stressful day on the phone trying to place my Red reservation, I had missed the party and about 70 places in line for Red One.
Who knows, they might announce a set of primes this year and start taking orders for that.
I won't make that mistake again, I'll see you guy's there Monday morning.

Hmmm..I've got a solution: I think I'll stop by the RED booth periodically every day I'm at NAB (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday). Like my addiction to this forum, the thought of missing anything really bugs me!

Assumming that we - the great unwashed - have not been notified of the gigantic RED piss up that will almost certainly take place somewhere in Las Vegas then plan 'B' is to head here on Tuesday night:

And Shawn mate - it'll be my greatest pleasure - and it breaks my heart to say this - to buy you a pint of German beer ! I can't believe I just said that !
There must be a real ale house somewhere in LV - I mean they've got a one third scale Eiffel Tower and Pyramid - though quite what the point of a 1/3 scale Pyramid is - is - well - beyond me??
I mean the whole point of the pyramids was that they were the largest, single, free standing structures, to have been erected in the whole history of human development. That's like having a 1/3 scale penis isn't it? - what's the point - that's useless - a penis - like a Pyramid - should be of proper proportions shouldn't it !!
Sorry - I've had the best part of two bottles of Premier Cru - so Jarred, please edit out anything that is gratuitously offensive when you've stopped laughing!
Thanks mate!

How 'bout a conga line of REDservationists circling the booth, flinging little 3" stickers out to the enraptured onlookers...

I like it! A sticker frisbee tournament in the aisles, a Bocce Ball tournament using prosumer cameras as the balls, RED wash-off tatoos, Kalua pig cooking in an Emu, and an after 5-pints technical term spelling bee!!!
Tranquil_Light: there's a magic little blue pill that fixes any 1/3 scale problems with privates...LOL!

Good ideas! If there are no redheaded booth babes someone in marketing needs to get the boot though. Now if the boothbabes red hair is also on fire the marketing people should be probably get a raise. Food for thought.

Hey now!
No setting redheads on fire, I'm a redhead (or was anyways more gray then red nowadays) so I take umbrage to such ideas!
Also, how come you know the little pill is blue?

Think you've got a T-Shirt idea there... "Take the Red Pill" on the other side it could say "I see 4k".

Never mind about the little blue pill, that was posted by Gibby and I don't mess with people who are a personel friend of the Smiths and the Wessons.
But speaking about T shirts, when I picked my mom up from the crematorium she came in a little box that had a piece of tape wrapped around it that said "Temporary Container". Always thought that would make a great T shirt.

I think there needs to be a raid on the RED STORE storage room before NAB, and every reservation holder should be entitled to a free red sticker or two at the booth.
If you bring your "R" it should be from a choice of the sizes.

Hi Chuck, Does that mean I have to wear a bullet proof vest when I visit NAB? Either that, or maybe I can have you and Gibby flanking me where ever I go. No bullet would get through you two! (That's a compliment -BTW)
Sorry to hear about your mom - though I like the T shirt idea, very Buddhist.
Another T shirt idea: 'Please recycle after use' or '100% recycled material'

Hi Phil,
Nah you don't need a vest. I love Vegas, always have big fun there. Wish I was going this year. Mom was a tough old bird who lived a good and long (89 years) life. I was the only one of five (the youngest and only boy talk about a spoiled chilhood) lol, who got her red hair and blue eyes.
Yeah that was my take on the box too. I like the Please recycle after use. Mayby we can come up with some way to power our cars with the dearly departed!

Hi Chuck,
Opps I lost this thread for a while there. Pity you can't make it to NAB - let me know if there are special questions you'd like asked or any stands whose products you are interested in.
Glad to here your Mom made it to 89 - in the UK we call that a very good 'innings' which is modeled after the cricket parlance.
I like the lateral thinking on saving the world with the recently departed !! If that guy in 'The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy' is correct in asserting that: "Life is wasted on the living" then maybe we could start a whole new system where people donate huge sums of money after they have died - oh wait we've been beaten to it by the British - they call it inheritance tax! Damn!
All the best, Phil
