View Full Version : Dark Smudge on LCD

I'm just playing with a new camera and don't have a lens yet. But when I power up there's a pretty big (half the size of a dime maybe) black smudge in the lower middle of the LCD. It appears visible during the "Initializing" screen and remains there through the RED logo screen and the final shooting mode screen. It looks like a gigantic dust spot from hell, but a quick peek at the sensor appears to show it clean. I haven't gotten a loupe out to look at it yet though.
I sorta doubt it's actually on the sensor/footage since it's showing up on the initializing screen, but I haven't shot anything yet and I'm unsure if that screen accesses the sensor in any way. I can test the HD-SDI out and HDMI out later, but I was just wondering if this is something anyone's seen before and if there's a fix.

I did record some footage and this spot is not on the footage. It's clearly a LCD defect. I put in a support ticket several days ago and have heard nothing. I'll give them a call when I get the chance. It seems like a defect to me - one I'm not real interested in putting up with right out of the box.

Joelnet,
I have that same issue too......
I discovered it about 2 weeks ago.. Two small shadow spots on the bottom of the LCD.. Same conditions as you.. I don't know why this is there.. I baby that LCD and pack it so well... Kinda frustrating that I'm noticing this now.. I guess that first 3 weeks of excitement blinded me to it

My spots are so big no one could miss them. They are blobs. I turned it on the first time and went... that's weird, would sensor dust look like that?
BTW, it's fun to watch you get out there and shoot. Thanks for posting. If I'm ever in your area I'm buying you a beer.

Haha, thanks Joel.. I'll actually be in Tempe this month, or early next month.. my family lives there.. I'll hit you up when I'm in town..
Anyway you can take a picture of your blobs? I want to see if they look like mine

All right, I'll buy you a beer down on Mill Avenue. I'm close to Tempe.
Underneath the Initializing... those dark spot are not photographic anomalies. They are the smudges. Appears over all screens and video. Can't see it with power off.

YEPPPP,
That's exactly what I have, except my two are on the bottom of the screen, out of picturesafe.. still annoying to stare at knowing that its a $1700 piece of equipment.. I would mail yours back to Red right away.. Centered blobs are unacceptable

I think it might be some internal components were pushed against the back of the LCD panel that's cause that. Also possible when the screw on the RED arm went too far into the back of the LCD screen.

If that's the case & the Red LCD is that delicate, then I worry about the future.. I understand if the screen was dropped or stepped on, but regular use shouldn't be producing these smudges. I'm curious if other people are experiencing these issues. Mine is nothing compared to Joel's, but its there
* that upside down V in the center of the image is not the smudge we're talking about.. That's some weird camera effect.. The smudge is that thing on the bottom left..

I have a panasonic 17" monitor which had the same smudge look after it took a tumble (wind picked up the whole video village tent and dumped it). It looks exactly like this. Maybe they are not protected well enough in shipping?

I had that on my cell phone. Don't bump that area, or push on it, it will turn purple. My cell phone got that way cause I fell on it skiing

Ths shipping box seemed good to me. Perhaps the packing people crammed it in there. I don't know... I've pushed on a lot of LCD screens in my day and never had one bruise. You've got to be able to clean them - they shouldn't be "that" sensitive. If they are then maybe everyone does need to plexiglass cover. They are going to get handled on a set.
