View Full Version : basic media recording question
If you have a Red Drive formatted for 4K 2:1 23.98, and then with that drive still attached to the camera you create a New Project that is 4K 23.98 (not 2:1), do you have to re-format the entire drive before recording footage with the new project settings?

no, you only have to reformat when you change the project base, i.e. 25fps to 23.98 fps. You can shoot at any resolution and varispeeds on the same media if the project base is constant ;-)

We did a test just like that yesterday. We shot 4k 2:1, 4K 16 x 9, 3K 2:1 one take after the other. We did not have to format the drive. Everything transfered over perfectly. The only issue we encountered was that the LCD continued to reflect the original setting (4K 2:1) The readout on the back of the camera was correct according to the settings.

Cool. Good to know!
I notice the LCD shows 24fps in big numbers at the top left of the screen, even when the Project is set to 23.98. Meanwhile, in small yellow numbers, the lower left part of the LCD shows that correct frame rate for the Media formatting. So I wonder what the top left framerate is referring to when the project is a 4K 23.98 project?

Its the capture frame rate, but it does not use decimal places - the magazine recording tally does though. The logic was that for the operator of the camera, "24" is the same whether you are really recording 24.00 or 23.976 (a.k.a 23.98) fps. After all that is only a 1/1000th difference per second. ... This would be even more confusing for the camera operator if we maintained the full decimal point resolution when in Varispeed .. i.e do you want to see 12 fps or 11.99 fps ?

from what i recall - the camera will let you know if the formatted media does not fit the project ... so if you change the fps to 24fps ( card formatted to 23.98) - you'll get a notice form camera about it - i just don't recall on CF cards if it tells you instantly or when you hit record ? ...
i know if camera is ON & you plug in the Red hard drive formatted for 24fps and if the camera project is 23.98 it will tell you when the camera mounts the hard drive that hard drive is formatted 24fps and project is 23.98 ...
