When importing an ALE created by metacheater into avid the clip name loose meaning and when exporting an EDL only the tape/reel name remains. any simple solution?

Thanks.

When using ALE to merge metadata for RED files, the CLIP name needs to match the file name for the batch import to work. But once that process is done, you can change it to whatever relevant information is needed for the editor since the filename is then tracked elsewhere for EDL, DPX, etc.

In MetaCheater, the top right buttons allow the tape name to be the full file name.

I am not in town for the Editor's Lounge. I really wanted to be there though. I can't do the Friday night thing. I need to be home on the weekends for the kids since my wife works weekends.

There will be several Avid people there showing some workflow stuff for a demo I prepared. A sneak preview of the XML tools from and to RedCine, etc.

I wanna go to that...

Exporting an EDL from the Metacheater data may be of limited benefit anyway, as the tape names (A###_C###) get truncated in a somewhat unusable manner.

One option would be to shorten the tape name to something usable that will fit in the EDLs reel column. According to the EdlMax reference (http://www.edlmax.com/MAXGUIDE.HTML) CMX-3600 supports an 8-character reel name, so contracting it slightly should work.

The XML conversion I designed does the same as the request I made for metacheater; uses the full tape name as source ID and Tape name. Since day one I have been raising the issue that the first 4 characters are not unique enough to use for identification.

What is better about the XML from RedCine is that it already handles more metadata than just parsing a file name - an example of this is the scale and offset parameters are tracked in ALE, during editorial and handed back to RedCine. Having this source info with any additional picture manipulation is key information for a conform. Over time you will see other metadata such as color values, etc also available.
