View Full Version : Bottom half of proxies scrambled. Raw files ok.
Has any one downloaded files from their Red Drive, and tried to playback in quicktime, but the bottom half of every frame, of every proxy (over 70 takes of 20 set-ups), is scrambled. When played in Red Alert, the bottom half is black. The Raw files play in Red Cine just fine. What's up with that?

Been there! Best of luck with it. Our footage with it was all unfixable.

any chance did you shoot 16x9 ?
16x9 playback in FCP or QT has 1/2 frame scrambled = doesn't work yet ...
you have to shoot 2-1 aspect for proxy's & QT to play back good image ...

Yes, but it was every frame, of all three proxies, on over 100GB of footage.

But they can still be exported from REDCINE yes?
I saw the same thing on 16x9 QT refs, with the bottom scrambled.

We had heard about the 16x9 issue. We were shooting 4k, 2:1, 23.98, Redcode28, on Red drives, with battery, on build 14 Beta.

The RAW files look great in Redcine.

If your raw files look fine you are probably alright as our raw files were screwed.

Is it a recurring problem, or did it only happen to you once? What did you do to prevent it from happening again?

Happened on a job many, many months ago. Solution was to get a different camera in to finish the job.

RedAlert, RedLine, and QT proxies don't work with 4K 16:9 footage yet. Only RedCine can handle that format at the moment (that will change very soon). You will see the half frame problem if you try to play 4k 16:9 footage in anything but Redcine (and Scratch).

I'm heading out for a two week shoot in a remote location, if I shoot 16:9 (4K / 2K) will I be safe on return (end of March)? I really don't want to shoot in a format which is effectively incompatible. However, my finish will likely be in 1080p HD.
This is a new paradigm. We need to remember, we are not shooting on a camera. We're shooting on a computer. So we did what we do when we're having problems with a computer. We re-install the software. I just reloaded the beta of 14 and the new proxies are all fine. Also note, our Raw files were always ok.

I'm glad to hear it's fixed. But I have to say, if simply re-loading the *same* firmware fixes it, there is something very wrong. Any bit errors should be detected by checksums and an invalid firmware file should not load. I'm wondering if there is some hardware problem behind this.
