Well, in the mean time, here are a few more I shot today. My sticker's been peeled so many times that it's just a vinyl logo at this point. :)

Name that "4K" ;)

And yes, SCRATCH is "connected" to RED. :)

Gotta bump it with a picture...

This is a composite from five pictures taken with a sticker. So it's both real and fake.

Eligible or not, you're doing great at boosting morale in here. I'm surprised there aren't more submissions yet. Then again, everyone could be having my luck... Several failed attempts at something cool, so I took it a different direction and will post closer to the deadline.

don't want to blow up anybody's spot but i just got a cool, free red sticker in the mail today and handwritten note thanking me for being one of the first 100 to support red. not complaining at all but my number is 121. i wonder if the first couple dozen reds are being counted as internal use only for red employees, loaners, etc. so maybe i'm considered among the first batch shipping after all?

Dan Blanchett
03-26-2007, 04:59 PM
Or it could be that some folks bought more than one camera, so your number does not reflect the 121st buyer, just the 121st camera. Jim, for example, has numbers 1 thru 5, but he's only one person (despite rumors to the contrary).

Get those RED/blue 3D glasses out of storage. There's quite a story behind this image, more details to come in a bit when I have time to write it up.

Taken with the R3D v0.01 camera. Coming soon, to de-evolutionize the 3D imaging industry. :matrix:

Edit:> This image assumes the red lens covers your left eye and the blue lens covers your right eye. This is necessary for the most sublime viewing experience.

I just thought it was all about the coolest or most unique thing you could do with a RED sticker. I may as well post the pic of the 3" sticker on my snowboard helmet that won't stay on because I had it on my hockey helmet first... One of my local ice rinks that I play at had to rebuild one of the ice sheets about 2 weeks ago. I tried to convince them to put my 20" sticker as the face-off dot at center ice, but they wouldn't go for it.

I tried to convince them to put my 20" sticker as the face-off dot at center ice, but they wouldn't go for it.

That's a shame!

My one big idea that never came to fruition: SONY's US headquarters is here in San Diego and I thought about buying a couple of plastic toy tanks, slapping stickers on them, and placing them in the foreground of the shot of the Sony building to signal the RED Army invasion. RED DAWN!

I also thought about rolling the sticker around some rice and seaweed and chopping it up to look like RED sushi rolls. 'cause everyone knows RED is best served RAW... :shifty:

Alas, there is only so much time and effort we can devote to this.

Brook Willard
03-31-2007, 05:05 PM
Ideas that never came to fruition:

Me recreating my avatar with my RED helmet: weathered out.
Putting the RED sticker on a Panavision case: camera was out of batteries.
Putting the RED sticker on a Sony Pictures Entertainment lot sign: camera was out of batteries.
Putting the RED sticker on an Arricam LT: all personal cameras or cell phones on set were confiscated/held by the production department.

End tally: somebody at FotoKem has one sticker, the other is on my helmet. I took more pictures than I probably should have. I also need to be able to afford a DSLR - these point/shoot jobbers suck! :)

Greatest victory? Getting the sticker on a Spirit 4K [as seen earlier in this thread... but here's a wider shot].

I'm officially done with my entries. Kelly, it's in your court. :)

Nice ideas guys.

Elcurado, I think you'll loove seeing that sticker on the tank when your two babies arrive...now just take care of the bike's Red case and you're ready to roll...

Thanks for nice comments, guys. The sticker was ment to go much higher, but there was no time to get that "vertical" in shape...

I had an idea of buying a small plastic chainsaw for kids (yes they make those), getting sticker on it, going to the cinema projector booth and goof as if attacking the projector.
Children's chainsaw would symbolise young device attackin on older ones, aand no one would let me in the cinema with the real thing, obviously.
Arranged with the cinema owner, but the time was too short - also remembered that someone had a chainsaw pic in some earlier posts.

Good luck, people.

When this sticker contest was first announced, I immediately began concocting all sorts of ideas. A couple of them were really out there and may not have even reached completion by the contest deadline. Such as booking passage for a RED sticker to the International Space Station or on an upcoming NASA probe. Some of my ideas even had questionable legal ramifications… I seriously considered placing my 20” sticker over the 22” O of a Sony sign on a local building. But one after one, all my cool ideas crumbled and I was left desperately thinking up stuff I could do in the last 10 days or so of the contest. While doing my usual late-night surfing on REDUSER.net and pondering my latest idea -- a RED sticker fashion shoot. I was wondering if my Sticker Photo Shoot idea would work best with ladies wearing lingerie, bikinis or only strategically placed RED stickers, I happened upon new inspiration....

On 3/21/2007, our fearless leader (Mr. Jannard) had posted this (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=21070#post21070) in the midst of a thread discussing how we REDUSER members believed the RED camera should be manufactured:

http://www.appliedvisual.com/redimages/inspiration.gif

Being the smart-ass joker I often am, I immediately thought I should whip up a pinhole camera out of a soda can or a shoe box or something and post a response. But no, something else popped into my mind – STICKER CONTEST! I would in fact take a swing at building a camera. And not only that, but I would make it do at least one thing that the RED One won’t do. A bit of thought on the matter (just a few minutes) and…

The R3D 0.01 was born! Or at least the concept… The R3D camera (or Rudimentary 3-D) would meet the above goal as it would be able to shoot properly registered, 3D stereo imagery. Something the RED One does not do (at least not as a single camera in it’s standard form, as far as we currently know).

So with that concept in mind, how does this tie into a RED Sticker Contest? I will tell you. Once complete, I will use this highly advanced <cough> 3D imaging device to take 3D photos of my RED stickers and I will present them to you, the viewing public, in glorious 3D. …Red/Blue 3D glasses will be necessary for your viewing pleasure. Stereo images produced here assume that the RED lens covers the left eye, the blue lens covers the right, as that is the standard as far as I'm aware. And the way my two available 3D glasses (from some of my kids' books) are configured.

Anyway, I took the concept of a home-built, box pinhole camera and expanded it into 3D territory. I'm not the first to do such a thing, but it's not very common either. Attempting to save myself time/money by using materials already in my possession turned out to be a complete disaster. I was attempting to use 4x5 sheet film. I already had some Kodak T-MAX 400 in my hands. It wasn't supposed to expire for another 5 months, but either it or my supply of developer chemicals had already gone bad. Long story short, I fought with the project for several days and this one 3D picture is my only fully successful attempt. Shot on my kitchen table, my RED stickers all still on their backing, except for the 3" sticker on my ski/snowboard helmet (left side / blurry). And other curios thrown in for fun and additional depth/perspective. Lighting was afternoon sun through windows, overhead lamp, two additional can lights in ceiling. The pin-holes on this camera are super-tiny and give a pretty good picture, except blurry in spots due to uncleared debris and/or rough edges. But being so small the exposure time was 55 minutes. Yes, no joke. 55 minutes with possibly expired Kodak T-MAX 400 4x5 film.

Once again, the picture:

http://www.appliedvisual.com/redimages/3dstickers.jpg

I built the R3D camera out of black foam-core board, glue, black silicone caulking to seal light leaks/corners, Coca-Cola can for material in which to make pinhole openings. I made my dual 4x5 film sheet holder with one piece of foam board on top of another. A spacer was made out of black matte board to allow enough room for the film to slot into place.

Camera back / film holder:
http://www.appliedvisual.com/redimages/holder.jpg

Here's the whole camera:
http://www.appliedvisual.com/redimages/r3d01.jpg

Hope you all enjoyed... I'd be happy to post more pics or details if anyone is interested. The forum only lets me link 4 images per post. I doubt I'll carry this little R3D "experiment" any further. It's kinda neat, but lots of design flaws uncovered with this first version. After all, I didn't have a plan, I just built it and invented as I went along. Worked OK, but the film pieces are a bit too far apart. I would do better with a 2-hole design using a single 5x7 or 8x10 sheet of photographic paper. Or making the camera longer, increasing the focal length / zoom effect. But this also increases exposure time. This first prototype is showing lots of wear from the dozens of attempts made at getting a 3D picture.

I suppose it would be easy to make your own... If you have any color filters or gels for lights, you just need a red and a blue, hold the proper one over the corresponding eye and look at your screen.

Or try...

http://www.berezin.com/3d/3dglasses.htm

http://www.3dglassesonline.com/

...I don't know anything about either of those two, but I found them with a quick search and they don't look too bad. OTOH, WTF do you really need 3D glasses for? Hehe...

Jeff Kilgroe
03-31-2007, 11:02 PM
OK, had to throw a couple last minute ones up... These were just done with my Nikon in a few minutes.

Here is the 3" sticker on my helmet, sitting on my 20" sticker that still has no home. I was going to place it on the back window of my SUV, but I've decided to sell the thing this summer and don't want to waste the sticker just yet. Any suggestions?

http://www.appliedvisual.com/redimages/helmetand20inleft.jpg

And here's the same thing in anaglyphic 3D! I did this with the Nikon by taking the left eye shot (picture above) and then sliding the camera over about 4" or so. Handheld - I used the back of a chair for support. Did the separations and layer screening in Photoshop. Sorry for the crappy lighting. Actually not half bad for just eye-balling it. This one is in color, but as with most red/blue anaglyphs, they pretty much shift to grey when viewing through appropriate glasses.

This is necessary for the most sublime viewing experience.

very cool. I'm such a geek! Hey next to my computer, oh yeah a pair of 3d glasses...I knew they'd come in handy sometime ;)

Dumb luck! Actually I did not spot it at all...Kelly pointed it out to me! I was too focussed on getting off a few shots of the trolly before it flew by. EDIT: ok, nevermind, I misread your comment. I was as surprised to see it in there...

Anyway,

Thanks for the kind words on my entry guys!

I am so kicking myself right now... I had a stack of attempts that I didn't develop because the film either slipped for one reason or another or a couple I was stupid and slotted the film in backwards. I went and processed them just to see what I had and I'm a bit nauseated.

I haven't scanned any in yet, but I just had to take shot with the still camera and play a bit real quick with a couple. Look at these two. Initially discarded because the right eye view was half out of the slot even though the top was taped and I put it in facing the wrong way. I set them aside in an empty TMAX box and kept the lid closed so they wouldn't get exposed.

Because the right view was out of wack, I don't know if they'll line-up properly for 3D imaging, but way more clear and nice than the image I submitted. I've got more, but it's starting to get depressing to look at them. :waaa:

Anyway the negs are on top, and I just inverted in photoshop for the bottom, no color correction or anything. Grrrrr......

I'd love to, but with the exposure times on this thing and developing, that's a scary proposition. :)

I like Ace's wiggle-vision though. I might give that a shot or something similar.

If somebody has two similar DSLRs, two remote releases and some time on their hands, it'd be pretty simple to mount the cameras on a piece of wood right next to each other. Put a handle on the wood, set the cameras to "stun" and run around [well... walk slowly around] taking sequential pictures! Bring them into your favorite compositing software and you should be in business.

Ready... go!

Jeff Kilgroe
04-02-2007, 07:07 PM
Hehe... I've got two identical 50mm Nikkor lenses. If I had two identical DSLRs I'd probably try it.
