View Full Version : Steadicam Monitor for RED?

Just talked to Jacque at Transvideo. They are willing to modify their new HIGH BRIGHTNESS HD Steadicam monitor to show the RED overlays. They have contacted RED and have received no cooperation. He says they are unwilling to share information.

The RED LCD is nowhere near the size or brightness of the Transvideo which is a popular higher end Steadicam monitor. The RED lcd is also smaller and harder to see in lower light than the Transvideo Steadicam monitors. The RED lcd is really intended for the Asst. and for that is very nice.

IF it's true that RED tech. won't share info then they are not helping us Steadicam folk. Many of the purchasers of the RED are Steadicam ops. Seeing the overlays on the Steadicam monitor is critical for operation at a high level of the RED on Steadi. The current RED Lcd is not a good solution because it is not any why near bright enough to view while facing up in direct sunlight, and too small. This is not about competition with the RED lcd this is about additional needed capability.

The cooperation of red with those who make camera support equipment is crucial to the success of the camera in the Steadicam environment. All the companies who make Steadicam equipment should be recruited by RED to make their equipment RED compatable, not denied information.

Hey TJ,

Although I am not a Steadicam Op, I agree with what you are saying 100%.

Hey TJ.
While I agree that co-operation is the best. I can't see how we could use the multipin DVI standard, which RED uses in their LCD connector, with our steadicam rigs.

From the steadicam/crane operators side, the goal must be to have more, or all of the, overlays on the RED HD-SDI output ,which is compatible with all steadicams (if you disable the internal Composite video DA), and also the Transvideo line of monitors.

This would also help everyone else who wants monitor options and still want to navigate the menus...

I second Anders. Lets get HD-SDI output enabled with overlays. That covers us all with either HD monitors already available or with down-convert to everything else.

Just wanna see the overlays on crane/steadi just putting the overlays out the HDSDI HDMi outputs works for me. Actually is a better way if this is possible?

Why not use your regular monitor? Steadicam monitor, XCS monitor etc.. Then just use the frame line gen on the monitor to match up to the red frame lines. Steadicam has an amazing monitor on their ultra 2 sled. And it has HDSDI down the center post.

TJ, I'm not sure if you read that link I sent you, it's got plenty of info. I also read that it works great outdoors even in direct sun light. 400 nit

If you don't care about seeing the menus you can use any HDSDI monitor for the Red. The 720P preview outputs show you the entire frame and the frame lines - just the bottom info text is cut off.

If I am reading the rumors about build 15 properly it sounds like there might be an option to output all the info over HDSDI.
