View Full Version : Redemption by Surreal Road

Hi all,

For better or worse, I've decided to release "Redemption" the application we've been using internally to track and manage the Red camera clip metadata for free (under a GPL) along with the Filemaker Pro source.

Right now it's mainly useful for building batch scripts and so on.

Some of its features:

import a redline csv file
add notes and images to clips for reference
print a log of all the data, broken down by reel
set up templates for batch-processing clips (e.g. with redline)
automatically add proxy movies or generate reference stills from the r3d filenames and add them to the clip records
execute redline commands directly from the Redemption UI.

More information and download links are at: http://redemption.surrealroad.com

There is a wiki with documentation available at http://sites.google.com/a/surrealroad.com/redemption/

Current build is 005.

Note: There is no upgrade mechanism right now. Installing a newer version will give you an empty database. You should export any previous database contents before upgrading to a newer version.

Feedback is appreciated, please leave it here... (http://getsatisfaction.com/surrealroad)

A couple of screenshots are attached.

Chris

The source (fp7) should certainly work, there's nothing in there specific to OS X, but there is no standalone build/.exe version (yet). I also have no experience of working with the windows version of Redline (if there is one).

Let me know if you run into problems with it.

A new build is available (same link, see the original post).

Changes:

1. No longer goes to clip list if import is cancelled.
2. Import also prompts for reel generation.
3. Added option to show/hide toolbars
4. Changed the way the database summary is calculated
5. Fixed help page buttons
6. Removed script visibility from menus
7. Fixed redline template to correctly output format code
8. Template defaults to use _{Date} as part of filename output
9. Template field highlights when an invalid tag is set (for example if no filename is specified)
10. Fixed date formatting to match latest redline version
11. ReelID is now calculated from Camera and Reel if they are specified
12. Redemption will highlight redline options it thinks might be useful to change based on other options you’ve set
13. Fixed filename output for when filename begins with “././”
14. Fixed a crash that could occur due to a corrupt preferences file.
15. Added an (experimental) Windows version

Please note, upgrading from an earlier version is not currently possible. You can do it manually by exporting data from the old version and then importing it into the new one.

redline seems to have limited codecs for qt transcode, do you know if it's possible to do QT transcode to Avid DNX codec with redline - if so it would be good to have it added to the dropdown choices? redcine allows this codec.

Unfortunately redline doesn't seem to have this functionality (yet?). I might try to see if there's a way of doing it with Applescript, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Having said that, I've just noticed that one of the more recent builds of redline include Uncompressed 4:2:2 8/10bit quicktime options which are not listed in Redemption.

I've just completed build 3 of Redemption (more details on that in a second), so those two presets will have to wait to get added in build 4.

Build 3 is now available (the Windows version is unchanged).

Noteworthy changes are the use of Applescript to automatically add proxy movies or generate reference stills from the r3d filenames and add them to the clip records, and also execute redline commands directly from the Redemption UI.

Changes:

1. Added growl support (Mac OS X only)
2. Added the ability to highlight/select individual clips
3. Added the option to limit exported batch list to selected clips
4. Added {ResizeX} and {ResizeY} template tags
5. ISO value is now stored per clip
6. Added a button to run redline command from clip record (Mac OS X only)
7. Fixed {Path to Reel} tag to account for 2-digit year formatting of date
8. Added buttons to generate a reference image and insert it into the current clip record or for all clips (Mac OS X only)*
9. Added buttons to insert QuickTime proxy into the current clip record or for all clips (Mac OS X only)*
10. Prompts to automatically insert QuickTime proxies or stills after import
11. Added a button to the help page to execute the redline csv generation (Mac OS X only)
12. Separated out some of the data to help facilitate some sort of upgrade functionality in future versions
13. Shows random images on front page

*Note these functions require the Red QuickTime codecs to be installed, that the QuickTime wrappers have been created, and that the filepath is set as an absolute path (i.e. “/Volumes/Disk Drive/Folder/file”)

i just tried this but having trouble with the source paths that the script is generating.

after scanning the computer, import the csv, i have a filename that shows as

././Volumes/test/r3d/A001_C001_071104_001.R3D at the top

in the command script though it is making bad path to the source with a . in front so it cant find the file when you run it.

redline -i "./Volumes/test/r3d/A001_C001_071104_001.R3D" -o "/Volumes/Jekyll/temp/A001/2048x1024/" --format 10 --renum -1 --resizeX 2048 --resizeY 1024 --gammaCurve 1 --NR 250 --useMeta ./Volumes/test/r3d/

also the qts and single frames areentt working, but maybe the same issue with the path?

i swear i was working with this successfully yesterday...

any ideas?

yes I see the problem. I'll have a new build with the fix in about an hour. Sorry about that.

Jack James
04-02-2008, 03:07 PM
a quick update to address the problems just mentioned.

1. Purging database now also resets the Redline template.
2. Changed the way “././” in filenames is handled to be the same as build 2.
3. Added uncompressed 4:2:2 QuickTime codec choices.
4. Corrected ISO template tag.
5. Temporary workaround for curve parameter mis-match in redline when useMeta is unchecked.

thanks very much, i'll try it in the morning.

how would you use it on a project by project basis, would you do a "save as" and keep each project as it's own redemption file? what might be a good thing to think about is having multiple project indexing within the same database.

also, how does it deal with issues like moving the red data files to another location, will the 'update' on import add new records or update any changed location data for records already in the database.

being able to customize and save multiple batch templates would be nice too.

At the moment that would be the only way to do it. In theory you'd only need to keep the userdata.rdm file in each case, but it's worth saving the redemption.rdm also, just in case.

For what we've been doing, we've just nuked the database at each stage (i.e. preparing rushes, then preparing online, etc.) but I can see how having a permanent archive would be helpful.

The real issue right now is that Filemaker doesn't provide for any sort of upgrade mechanism, which means that every time the software is updated, you have to start with an empty database.

What I'll hopefully do for the next version is implement some method for exporting all the main stuff into a single file, and then that file can be imported into any future version of the software.

what might be a good thing to think about is having multiple project indexing within the same database.

That should be possible at some point. I can't promise it in the next version though...

I just checked this, and it's currently set to match by filename, which doesn't make an awful lot of sense, I'll grant you. I'll change it to match by ReelID, date and timecode and see how that works out.

being able to customize and save multiple batch templates would be nice too.

The infrastructure for this is in place, I just need to sort out a few kinks.

thanks thats fixed the path for the script.

i am unable however to get the add qt proxy to it to work or dont see what it is supposed to do, it does say however that "imported proxies"

i dont seem to be getting the add images either- i says "movie unavailable" then "imported images" no image is added to the record. am i missing something?

also you should put in default values for the b/w toe mid and knee. otherwise they have to be manually entered to get something other than a black render.

another feature req would be the a button in the colour window to "reset" to default and also a "copy" and a "paste" colour buttons to transfer settings from clip to clip. or also "import" redalerts .RLX preset into the colour fields

this is turning into a great tool, thanks!

The add proxy/auto-add images will only work if you have previously generated QT files with redline (or if you had set the camera to do this for you). What it does is load the quicktime (or an image from the quicktime) into the clip details page. Presumably you don't have these proxy files for any of your footage? If you do, let me know.

it does say however that "imported proxies"
I will change that t say how many it imported in the next version (in your case, 0).

i dont seem to be getting the add images either- i says "movie unavailable" then "imported images" no image is added to the record. am i missing something?
no, because importing the images works in the same way as importing the proxies-- you'd still need to have the proxies along with the R3D files.

also you should put in default values for the b/w toe mid and knee. otherwise they have to be manually entered to get something other than a black render.
This is very strange. If you used a CSV file to create the records, it should just use the values from that. Either way, if you leave it blank it will just go with the defaults. Perhaps in the next version I'll change the way this works.
The other problem is that the values that redline outputs for these are different from what it expects as an input-- I'm still waiting for someone to get back to me on that.

you are right, i looked at the csv and all those values are 0.00000, i guess that was how the camera recorded them, these files came from last year.

That actually shouldn't be a problem. There will be certain folders that can't be searched using this command (like the spotlight and trash folders). It doesn't mean it's not working, it will just skip those folders. You should still have a CSV file at the end of it.

A few things:

Are you typing the command into the terminal window directly or using the "do this for me" link in the help page? (Try using the other method and see if that helps)
What version of redline do you have installed?
What version of OS X are you using?
If you are using the terminal commands, try this:

cd /
sudo find . -name "*_001.R3D" -print | xargs -I {} redline -i {} --printMeta 2
>& ~/redline.csv
you will need to provide your password to authenticate, but this should reduce permissions errors

Thanks Surreal for the response.

1. I have tried with the "do it for me"
2. Rdline 1.56
3. osx 10.5.2

I will try with the Terminal later and report.

Thanks Ido.

ok, i looked into this, and it seems that they added a security feature to OS 10.5 to disable many terminal commands (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307174) if there is no password set on your account.
The easiest way to solve this is to quit terminal, set a password on your account, and try again. You can then reset the password back to blank after the csv file is generated.

Alternatively, you can try this complicated workaround (http://forums.macosxhints.com/showpost.php?p=419008&postcount=5) to allow sudo to work with a blank password

I used the following command line: sudo find . -name "*.R3D" -print | xargs -I {} redline -i {} --printMeta 2 >& ~/Documents/redline.csv

FYI: When I open the CSV file in TextEdit it seems to contain all of the information.

When you import the csv file into redemption does it generate any records, or does it not do anything at all. If you want you can PM me the csv file and I'll look into it.

On a Mac sudo (list) password and su are different (though one can make them the same). Typically su (the root) password will not let you do anything until the root user (superuser, different than admin user) is activated. However if su is done after a successful sudo, probably the system will not ask for the root password as one is already root user for his/her "15 minutes of fames!", however, root user activation may be needed.

To activate root user please use /Applications/Utilities/Netinfo Manager

If you're using the fp7 version, at the top of the import proxy script is a variable called offset (defaults to 100 frames).

If you're using the standalone version, this is something I'll change in a future release to allow you to set it in the GUI.

Build 5 is now available (the Windows version is still unchanged).

Noteworthy changes are the separation of metadata and user colour settings, and the addition of multiple batch-processing templates.

Changes:

1. Import update method now matches by Reel, Camera, Clip, Start TOD Timecode and Date rather than filename.
2. There are two sets of colour parameters, one for the clip’s metadata and another, user-defined one. Importing CSV files will only write to the metadata parameters.
3. Added button to paste colour parameters from metadata.
4. Added button to reset colour parameters to defaults.
5. Added an ID field to clips table for indexing purposes.
6. Added infrastructure for multiple project tracking (note multiple projects are not implemented yet...)
7. Added template tags for metadata values. For example {ISO Meta} will be replaced with the value stored in the ISO metadata field. {ISO} will be replaced by the custom ISO value.
8. Added ability to copy and paste values via a “colour clipboard”.
9. Redline-specific options have been placed into their own tab under the revamped “Batch script generation” area.
10. You can now create and work with multiple templates.
11. Added some text to the UI to make the purpose of different sections a little clearer.
12. Added {RedDate} template tag, which uses the older (6-digit) method of calculating the numeric date value. New templates now use this method for the output path by default.
13. Added a button to generate some example templates.

See the original post for download details.

The Windows version has very limited development. I believe it is around 3 builds behind the Mac version. The main reason is that I spend most of my time on an Apple box, so there's very little incentive for me to play around with the Windows version, and the Red community appears to be very much Mac-based.

A lot of the most recent features are dependent upon Applescript to work (for example the ability to run terminal commands from the UI), with which there is no real Windows alternative.

The next release, when I get some time to work on it, will have a bunch more new stuff, and after that's done I might go and work on the Windows version to bring it up to date.

It's at:

that CSV data looks correct. If Redemption isn't creating records, it usually indicates that the Redemption data file is read only.

Please verify that:

You have moved the Redemption folder to your hard disk (i.e. Redemption will be in read-only mode if you try running it directly from the .dmg)
The userdata.rdm file is not read-only

If all this is the case, please give me a step-by-step of what happens when you hit the import button.

Hi,

I make the csv file import it into Redemption and it work correctly until I have choose to import the image at this point nothing is coming, I see that the script is lauching but there is a message window where is writed that it don't find the file.

The path of my files begin by ././A005_C002_......_001.R3D and I have not moved any file.

Thank for your attention man,

The problem is that your file path needs to begin at the root, i.e. ././Volumes/disk/etc/A005_C002_......_001.R3D

So you have two options now:
1. Purge the database and recreate the csv file, this time starting from / (type cd / into terminal before running the find command)
2. Manually edit each file path to include the full path...

ok I understand what you mean but if I launch de process with cd/ it scan all my computer and take time, my R3D files are in a specific folder or an external drive. Can I avoid the fact that Redline scan all my computer and put the folder or drive without having the path incomplete?

Thanks man,

Try this:
highlight the filename field
in the menu, go to edit>find/replace>find/replace
set find what to: ././
set replace with to: ././Volumes/disk/etc/
set direction to all
check: search within current field
hit replace all
