Just as a heads up import Red & accessory duties/taxes.....
0connor 1030 head/tripod............................no tariffs, GST only
Element rods/dovetails................................no tariffs, GST only
Red camera /cables/lens/charger/brackets......$100 duty on charger/battery/cables etc, GST on all
I have heard if it's personal, not business, it doesn't attract GST.
Cheers,
Dave,
ps: Rob/Martyn, get round here so I can open my presents..!!

???!!! That'd be huge for me!
So far my dealings with customs has been less than forth coming in info. And the ATO sent me to customs when I checked there.
Thanks for the details. My morning just got more interesting! :)
Have fun with those presents!
cheers

Hey Dave,
That's great, I was going to ask about real world tariff experience bringing in the gear.
Regarding GST, I guess it depends on who you get but there will be about $5000 GST to collect (they generally forgive up to about $100) and I'd doubt the government will be willing to pass it up! But if it's true, that will certainly make a lot of people happy!
Everyone who is GST registered will get the GST refunded anyway so in this case, it's probably better to be registered.
Jim
P.S. Congrats on the toys!

I emailed Chris Kentworthy (W.A) about this very subject last night. Here is what he said -
"It was all very, very easy. FedEx give you a call once the package is on its way, and you pay up. It was all done before the boxes even left the US. There are a few fees - they charge duty on a couple of items. I think it came to about $400 in duties and fees. The GST, of course, we get back. Having FedEx deliver makes it all very simple, so I doubt there's anything to worry about. Just be ready with your credit card. "
David - have you received you camera yet? How much did it cost you in duty? There seems to be a lot of differing info about what the cost will be for the customs boys to hand it over.
I called customs yesterday after doing a fair bit of searching on the matter and they were totally unhelpful - probably got caught in the "it's a Friday arvo before a long weekend so I really don't give a shit" timewarp that often happens here!!!
Anyway, any info from those who have completed their transaction and have camera in hand would be good. All going well I should have my camera by the end of the month and I can tell you what it cost then. But until that time...enquiring minds etc etc.
Cheers

Any details that people feel comfortable sharing would certainly be appreciated.
My experience with customs so far was less than rewarding but I got the feeling that the officer didn't quite understand what the camera was and I probably confused the poor person further when trying to explain.
I'll try again shortly and let folks know anything useful I find.

Used Fedex who use a customs adviser liason kinda guy, forget the job name. first up they quoted $250 in tariffs and I question some stuff and they brought it down to $100...probably could of got more by saying a particular part was an intergral parts of the camera....bit hard with the t-shirt/sticker I guess or thou for the Red badge I'd think you've have a legitimate case, but I was rushed the day they queried everything.
When the element technica rods/dovetail came in, the guy rang me and asked about the 15/19mm rod and I told him they were cinematography accessories...which is very true but if someone just calls them 15/19mm steel rods it's make it a bit harder to explain their true function. Same with the Red chargers. I guess, if they don't know shit about what the parts is or how they're used....and to them it just sounds like a generic bit of metal, battery charger etc and thusfalls into a duty attracting category, they won't even think err on the side of caution and slam duty on it. Of course it's important how it's described in the shipping note, but whatever it's your job to say its an integral part of camera and needs assembly. Like to them the red side brackets were just pieces of aluminium until I explained it was the casing/cage of a camera I had to assemble. Get the idea.
Yes the camera came in...A few of us sent most of todays assemblying it, couple of pieces were forgotten, which didn't help. Lucky I ordered the mains adapter as the batteries need to charge overnight. Bottom plate is shite and needs washers on both sides where the bolts screw in. It's certainly a lots of camera to get to know, best thing I ever bought.

Hey guys my red is on order. Do you know if i have to pay GST before recieving the camera or does the GST bill come after the camera has cleared customs?
thanks, Scott.

Hi Scott
You'll be charged the GST before collecting the camera - FedEx will handle what you owe and will not deliver the camera until that amount is paid - usually by CC over the phone.
You should only be charged a minimum of duty if any at all. I'm pretty sure they calculated duty on a couple of small components - everything relating specifically to the camera should not attract duty.
Have fun when it arrives!

Correct. Pretty much happens as it arrives in Australia. You will get a tracking number from Red when it ships. As soon as you see it's in the country, give Fed Ex a call with the tracking number to talk about customs etc.
I once had an order held up for a week because Fed Ex didn't have my phone number to call and talk about it! Ever since then I call them.

Have you considered....fumigation charges?!
I kid you not. When I imported my motion controlled slide, they classified it as "earth moving equipment" and slapped fumigation and quarantine charges. Just keep in mind you are dealing with the government! :troll:

Wow.. did you challenge that finding? Surely common sense dictates that it doesn't require fumigation or quarantine??

Yes, but the government operates with uncommon stupidity, not common sense, so it requires common waste of time to get any sense. :001_smile:

Not to be rude Pawel, but after a month on the Rock, I think you probably needed fumigation, if not Brut 33...

Damn man. Unfortunately I am familiar with this stupidity not only from the government but I also get a dose of it everytime I have to call the telephone/electricity/water/gas companies.
